3 Bridge Construction 101 Beam Safety Sound Approach Slab Abutment or Truss Pier Deck Fencing Wall Exisiting Shared Use Path at One Place Side Slope Bridge access ramp Express Lanes Express Lanes Outer loop Bridge Span Inner loop Bridge Span Bridge Length Abutment Substructure on either end of a bridge that supports the load from the bridge deck and girders and supports the earth embankment on either end of the bridge. Approach Slab A reinforced concrete slab located at the back of each abutment designed to transition roadway pavement onto the bridge deck. Beam or Girder Main support beam running parallel to the roadway beneath the bridge deck designed to transfer load from the deck to the abutments and/or piers. Bridge Length Total linear distance of the bridge measured from the back of abutment to the back of abutment. Deck The reinforced concrete traveling surface of the bridge. Pier An intermediate reinforced concrete column designed to accept load from the deck and girder. Piers are located between the two abutments. Safety Fencing A 10 feet safety barrier that is installed on the bridge. Span The distance between two supports of a bridge (typically a pier and abutment). The span length is measured from either the back of abutment to the center of the pier or the center of the pier to the center of pier.
