2 WHO IS THE AMERICAN DIABETES ASSOCIATION? Cure. Care. Commitment. It s who we are. It s what we do. Our Mission: is to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) is the nation s leading nonprofit health organization providing diabetes research, information and advocacy for all types of diabetes. Founded in 1940, the Association serves the community through the funding of publishing scientific findings, providing vital information, advocacy, summer camp and many other services for people with diabetes, their families and health care professionals. We lead the fight against the deadly consequences of diabetes and fight for those affected by diabetes. We fund research to prevent, cure and manage diabetes. We deliver services to hundreds of communities. We provide objective and credible information. We give voice to those denied their rights because of diabetes. FAST FACTS ON DIABETES Diabetes affects 25.8 million people 8.3 % of the population DIAGNOSED 18.8 million people UNDIAGNOSED 7.0 million people Among U.S. residents aged 65 and older, 10.9 million, or 26.9% had diabetes in 2010 About 215,000 people younger than 20 had diabetes in million people aged 20 years or older were newly diagnosed with diabetes in 2010 in the United States Approximately 79 million Americans aged 20 or older have prediabetes Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure, nontraumatic lower-limb amputations, and new cases of blindness among adults in the U.S. Diabetes is a major cause of heart disease and stroke Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the U.S.

The premier cycling event in the Capital Region dedicated to finding a cure for diabetes. This event offers a memorable day of cycling and fun through beautiful Saratoga County. It also gives the rider the personal satisfaction of completing a challenging ride and doing his part in the fight against diabetes. Whether you re a novice or expert cyclist, we have a route that matches your ability. Our routes feature full-service rest stops as well as SAG and mechanical support along the way. 4 RIDERS DEMOGRAPHICS The Participants and Volunteers in the Saratoga Springs Tour de Cure are your customers! Participants & Demographics Through the Tour de Cure, the ADA and its corporate sponsors continue to expand its reach among highly desirable audiences appealing to an affluent consumer. The Tour offers an opportunity to expose your brand to a targeted, exclusive audience who has the capacity to buy. As a Saratoga Tour partner, you can shape consumer attitudes, gain media coverage, showcase your product to a key building audience, increase company visibility and build community relations, all while supporting a great cause! In 2012 the Saratoga Tour riders raised an average of $480 more than the national average. While the majority of the Tour participants are in the age demographic, the ADA has also seen an increase in participants who are at a higher risk for developing type 2 diabetes. 5 WHY WE RIDE To support everyone who lives with diabetes and to showcase the courage and perseverance it takes to live everyday with this difficult disease. The Red Rider Program The purpose of the Red Riders is to support everyone who lives with type 1 or type 2 diabetes and showcase the courage it takes to live every day with this difficult disease. It's time to celebrate those with diabetes that get on their bikes and ride! The Tour de Cure recognizes riders with diabetes as the heroes on the day of the event! Being a Red Rider Means: That YOU are not alone! You can ride to thrive with diabetes! With hundreds of riders who may share a similar story, and hundreds more to support you, being a Red Rider can help with your first mile or your millionth in your fight to live a healthier life! Riding your bike is a great way to stay in shape and exercise is extremely important for everyone with diabetes. How Did the Red Rider Program Get Started? In 2006, Mari Ruddy rode in a Tour de Cure and asked the question, "Where are all the riders with diabetes?" Living with type 1 diabetes for more than 30 years, she wanted to talk to others like her with diabetes and celebrate everyone that was taking control of their health. In 2007, Mari Ruddy, Sandria Barrett & Marcey Robinson came up with the idea of the Red Riders and made that idea come to life at the Denver, CO, Tour de Cure that year. Now the Red Riders and Team Red are a part of every Tour de Cure in the nation and they want you to get involved and be proud to be a Red Rider! Go, Red Rider, Go!

7 WHERE DOES THE MONEY GO? The ADA provides grants to researchers to learn more about the causes of diabetes, better treatment of the disease, and ultimately to find a cure. To date, the ADA has funded more than $300 million in diabetes research in the United States. The ADA works to improve the quality of life for people who have diabetes through educational programs, literature, and lifestyle programs and services. The ADA also serves the community through various support groups and also keeps health care professionals up to date on the latest developments in treatments. The ADA advocacy team fights for the rights of people with diabetes against discrimination, as well as, increasing public and government awareness while ultimately working for better health care services and increased national funding for diabetes research. November is American Diabetes Month. This is time to communicate the seriousness of diabetes and the importance of diabetes prevention and control. For years, the American Diabetes Association has used this month as an opportunity to raise awareness of the disease and its serious complications. In 2009, the Association launched a national movement to Stop Diabetes with the audacious goal of gathering the support millions of Americans to help confront, fight and most importantly, stop diabetes. Date: November 2013 African American Initiatives are implemented with the live empowered program. A faith-based diabetes education project, Live Empowered, is the ADA curriculum outreach efforts for the African American community. Date: Year-Round Camp Aspire allows nearly 150 children to experience traditional camping activities during a week-long day camp. The youngsters not only get to ride horses, swim, rockclimb and more, they also learn valuable skills in caring for their diabetes. Nutrition, exercise, and medical sessions are cleverly presented so that children experience a positive attitude about living with diabetes. First 2 Weeks in July
