1 Dear Your Family Program at Fairview Recovery Services is scheduled to begin on. The 3-1/2 day program is a vital part of your patient's treatment and an experience that can benefit all the relationships in your life. The simple truth is that we are dealing with a disease as fatal as cancer or heart disease that seriously strains relationships and creates chaos on many fronts. The Family Program is intended to support you and to give you the tools to help in the life-long recovery process. Throughout the week you will have the opportunity to share how you have been impacted by the illness and you will gain knowledge and insight into the disease of addiction. Patients and families who actively participate in our program take a significant step toward quality long-term recovery. The Adult Family Program is appropriate for concerned persons or family members 13 or older. We have a Youth Program on Tuesday evenings for children Registration for family members will be in the West Building of UMMC, Riverside Campus, 5th floor, Room 541, between 8:00 AM and 8:20 AM on Day 1. Lectures and groups for family members begin at 8:30 AM daily. In order to gain the benefits of the full Program, it is important that the family participates in all aspects of the program, i.e. lectures, morning group (family only) and afternoon group (family/ patient). Change and growth is a process and each day of the program builds on the information and experiences of the previous day. If you can only attend part of the program, please schedule Day 1 and Day 2 at minimum. For family members who absolutely cannot attend a daytime program, we have a Tuesday evening family group that focuses on education and sharing. There is no interaction with your patient during these sessions. For evening program information call Greg at or grobert1@fairview.org. Please confirm your reservation for the Family Program by calling Fran Howley at (612) or fhowley1@fairview.org by the Thursday before your program. Sincerely, Fran Howley, Ed.D. Lead Family Counselor Revised: 05/07 Page1of6

3 FAIRVIEW RECOVERY SERVICES What is the family program? The family program is designed for the family, friends and patient currently in the chemical dependency treatment program. The Family Program helps patients and family members reach a new and deeper understanding of the effects of chemical dependency on behavior and relationships. Through lectures, groups and films, family members learn healthier ways to relate to each other. It is an integral part of the patient's treatment. Why should my family become involved? Alcohol and drug addiction is an illness that affects our relationships and the ability to communicate with others. For this reason, it is called a family illness. Recovery means more than just stopping the use of chemicals, it means improving the quality of life. What about the children? Children must be at least 13 years old to participate in the Adult Family Program. Children 6-12 are encouraged to participate in our Youth Program on Tuesday evenings from 5:30-7:00 PM. This coincides with our Adult Family Phase 2 Program. Where / When does the program occur? The 3 1/2 day program is held in the West Building of UMMC Riverside Campus, Minneapolis, Minnesota 55454, and runs Monday morning to Thursday until noon. (Schedule might change during holiday weeks.) Please refer to reverse side for complete Family Week schedule. Lunch Lunch is not included as part of our Family Program. Please be prepared to buy lunch at local restaurants or feel free to bring lunch / snacks with you Revised 06/02 Page2of6
