April 2, 2018 Alzheimer s Disease, Dementia & Mental Health Symptoms Speakers: Mary Anne Ross, Program Coordinator, Alzheimer s New Jersey Mary Catherine Lundquist, Program Coordinator, Rutgers UBHC, COPSA Institute for Alzheimer s Disease and Related Disorders This presentation will address the connections between Alzheimer s disease, dementia and mental illness. When people think of dementia, it s common to think of it as a mental illness due to the effects the condition has on the brain. However, there are distinctions that should be made between dementia and mental illness in order to properly diagnose the individual. While dementia does affect mental health, it is not a mental illness, but a disorder of the brain that causes memory loss and trouble with communicating. Don t miss this opportunity to obtain clarification, and information about available resources for testing and treatment in the Central Jersey. May 7, 2018 Expanding Educational Opportunities for Persons with Mental Illness Speaker(s): Amy Spagnolo, PhD, CPRP, Program Director & Faculty, & Michelle G. Mullen, MS, CRC, CPRP Department of Psychiatric Rehabilitation/Rutgers University School of Health Professions Have you or your loved one with serious mental illness struggled with academic or occupational goals? Have you become dismayed by the limited career options that result from your job seeking activities? If so, it is important to be aware that there are new and existing educational opportunities and resources to help you find the right career path. The speakers have worked on the development of anti-stigma projects, and programs and curricula that focus on improving career options for adults with psychiatric conditions, including the new RU Certificate in Peer Support. Take advantage of this rare opportunity to learn about options that may be a good fit for you! 9 NAMI Middlesex County in collaboration with Intensive Family Support Services of Middlesex County (IFSS) COPING & COPING An open support group for family members dealing with mental illness COPING is a project provided by NAMI Middlesex County in its ongoing attempts to improve the quality of life for people with recurring mental illness and their families. Companionship Open Discussion Peer Support Information Exchange New Direction Growing Hope We provide a forum for family and friends to share common experiences in dealing with mental illness in our families. We share information and suggestions to help resolve common problems. This fosters the development of useful tools that can be implemented to ease family burden. We help one another deal with the isolation and frustration that we feel in our attempts to cope with mental illness. One fundamental contribution of COPING is to give family members insight into new directions, which is achieved through the fruitful interchange of experience and information. A common reaction of family members is to let their own lives suffer as they struggle with the mental illness of a loved one. However, as the lifeguard knows, one must keep oneself from being pulled under to save those in need of help. Families in COPING soon find that their problems are not unique, and they gain strength by releasing their frustrations in a friendly and understanding atmosphere. New perspectives help families to plan for positive change in the future.
