2 From the Desk of District Governor Lewis Fifield Well how is everybody after the exciting weekend in Marystown? I have to congratulate Lion Geoff and his Club on the fantastic job they did on hosting our fall DGO again this year. We had an excellent turnout with 35 Lions Clubs being represented. I would also like to congratulate the winners of the various awards made by PDG&CC Lion Len Mooney. You, as winners, worked hard and the awards are well deserved. I would also like to say thank you to those Clubs that made donations to our District projects. On a sad note we were informed prior to our meetings that PDG Clayton King had passed away. For those of you that did not know PDG Clayton, he was District Governor , and a great Lion. This month I will be very busy. It is starting off with a visit to Trepassey Lions Club for a Sunday afternoon meeting, and then off to Community Five for a dinner meeting on Monday evening. From there, it s off to Amherst, NS. for the MD Fall Conference and when I return it will be an additional eight visits ranging from St. John s area clubs to Garnish. At this time I do not have any visits planned for December, however I can possibly do a couple if requested. Please remember that December is Hunger Month. Let s do something this month for those that are Hungry ; we can do this by providing a little more to your local food banks. Maybe by doing this we can make a family a little happier and a small child smile. All the best to everyone and don t forget our motto We Serve. Our International President says that we who are Lions are Beacons of Hope and I feel we are Lighting the way through Lionism PIP John L. Stickley who was born in Bonavista once said We cannot and must not stand still, so let s go out and recruit new members. Yours in Lionism Lewis Editor s note: At the Marystown Conference the winning number for the $50.00 Gift Certificate was not claimed. The number is If this is your number call Lion Geoff Lomond, Convention Chairman

3 FROM THE 1ST VICE-DISTRICT GOVERNOR Hello Fellow Lions, Another Lions Convention is History. It was a good convention, a lot of work was done, there were several side meetings other than the general meetings. Good Job Team! I had the privilege of attending the 62nd Charter Anniversary of the St. John's Lions Club, filling in for District Governor Lion Lewis, and enjoyed the visit very much. I saw a great deal of Fellowship there. I am sorry I missed the Bay Roberts Charter Anniversary due to a typing error on the invitation, maybe another time. It was nice to see such a fine crowd at the Garnish Lion War Memorial Monument for the Remembrance Day Ceremony, which took part with the Royal Canadian Legion from Fortune. There was the laying of wreaths by the Garnish Lions, Club, the Legion, M.H.A. Darren King for the Provincial Government, Judy Foote's assistant for the Federal Government, Mayor and Dep. Mayor of Frenchman's Cove and Garnish, and individual wreaths laid in memorial of loved ones war Veterans. I ask clubs to try and recruit new members. At the end of Oct we are down by 29 members. Look around your communities, and see who your next members will be. I ask the clubs to keep up their good work, and keep up their activities. Make sure reports are sent in on time, and all fees, International and District, are paid on time. No club wants to end up on Status Quo. I ask clubs to be visible in their communities; volunteer where you can. Volunteers are not paid, not because they are worthless, but because they are priceless. I am now off to the M.D. Fall Convention, in Amherst Nova Scotia. I am looking forward to meeting many new Lions. Thank you very much. Lion Morgan V.D.G. "Lionism: Kindness in Motion" Lions, I am writing this message just after returning from the Multiple District N Fall Conference held in Amherst, Nova Scotia, November 12 & 13. In last month s newsletter, I challenged you to move outside of your club walls. So, I thought I should lead by example. The last Multiple District Conference I attended was in It was great to meet Lions from the other provinces Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island who, together with Lions in Newfoundland and Labrador and a few clubs in Maine, make up our multiple district. Each district is different from District N4 in its own special way and, yet, we are all very much alike in the service that we provide to our communities. The international guest for this conference was International Director Lion Anne Smarsh from Kansas, U.S.A. Lion Anne held an open session on Saturday afternoon where she went over some of the new programmes coming out of Lions Clubs International and answered questions from the audience. Many who answered questions correctly were tossed a flying monkey. You had to be there. And, of course, there was a lot of fun on the weekend a meet-and-greet with a dance on Friday night, a musical comedy performance on Saturday night and plenty of laughs with good friends, old and new. So, keep thinking about getting out of your club walls. There is much to learn from other clubs and other Lions and a great deal of fun to be had at the same time. Yours in Lionism, Lion Gail

4 Elections Chair Report to District N4 Convention, Marystown Lion Garland Bailey, Chair October 23, 2010 Please accept my regrets for not being able to attend this convention. It seems personal life and family must come before my volunteering. When I advertised in the District Newsletter for nominations for a provincial Canadian Diabetes Association (CDA) person to represent Lions of Newfoundland and Labrador, I did so with great intentions; District N4 would elect a CDA person to sit on the national board of CDA However after receiving one nomination I was informed by DG Lion Lewis that N4 was no longer required to elect that person and that N3 would now fill their obligation and elect a CDA provincial representative for the next 3 year term. It was with great regret that I had to inform the nominating club that N4 would no longer have the opportunity to represent the province in this position. My apologies to all involved for any misunderstanding that I may have created by this event. I can assure all concerned it was done in good faith and with good intentions. As district Elections Chair this election was outside the normal for me. An extra position that was not even our turn to fill since PDG Frank Antle had just represented N4 for the past 3 years. Hopefully, I will not be led to such mistakes in the future. A position like Elections Chair sits in the wings until winter when the call goes out for District Officers. I want to encourage all clubs to look at your roster and see if your membership qualifies to serve as Zone, Region, Vice Governor, Governor or the Lion Max Simms Memorial Camp director to serve this great District of N4. There may be others. The CALL will come. Get your club involved in the District! Please see your Policy Manual for requirements for these positions. Lion Garland Bailey, Elections Chair

5 FROM THE CLARENVILLE LIONS CLUB Past District Governor Lion Joan Forward (L) and Ben Osmond, Co-op Board Member, present a donation from the Clarenville Lions/Clarenville Area Co-op "50-50" Lottery Project to Lion Gerald Coombs (R), Chair of the Board of Directors of the Lion Max Simms Memorial Camp. Established in 1981, and maintained and operated by the Lions of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Lion Max Simms Memorial Camp is a fully-accessible facility that provides an enriching and rewarding camping experience for individuals with special needs. Valerie Taverner (l) of the Clarenville Co-op Board of Directors and Clarenville Lions President Graham Bursey (r) present a donation of $5, to Rev. Eric Squires for the St. Peter's Anglican Emergency Response Fund in Catalina. The donation will be used to assist individuals and families whose homes were seriously damaged during Hurricane Igor in late September. This donation, together with 3 others, brings to $8, the total amount donated by the Clarenville Club in response to Hurricane Igor disaster relief efforts. "Ed Osmond, President and Co-ordinator of the Triple Bay Eagles Ground Search and Rescue Team, and Garry Pelley, team member were special guests at the Clarenville Lions Club monthly dinner meeting on October 25th. During the meeting, Lion President Graham Bursey presented a cheque in the amount of $8, to the GSR members. Included in this amount were the net proceeds from the Club's weekly bingo events during July and August past. Members of the Triple Bay Eagles assisted the Lions with the operation of bingo during this period. Mr. Osmond thanked the Lions for their generous donation. The funds will now enable the Triple Bay Eagles to complete the construction of their new team headquarters on Masonic Drive in Clarenville." On November 1, 2010, the Clarenville Lions Club played host to approximately 160 Senior Citizens from our town at its annual Seniors Dinner. The evening began with a church service, led by Lions, at Memorial United Church. Everybody then moved to the Clarenville Lions Club where a Hot Roast Beef Dinner was enjoyed. The food for this event was supplied by the Lions but, for the first time, a caterer was hired to cook and clean up allowing the Lions members to socialize with the other seniors. The meal was very capably served by five members of the Clarenville Leo Club. It was a real pleasure to see those teens in action and they did a super job! The guests were treated to some rousing, toe-tapping Newfoundland and Celtic music by our local musicians SLAINTÉ. The Leos showed their talents here also, as they sang to the accompaniment of the band. A good old game of cards ended a very successful evening. The cake was cut by the oldest lady and gentleman at the dinner. This happened to be Mrs. Blanche Mercer and a very active Lion, Baxter Tuck.

8 ST. JOHN S HEALTH CARE LIONS CLUB The St. John s Health Care Lions Club is busy doing many projects. One is the Vellux pillowcase project which was proven very successful and a report of this project appeared in the July/August issue of the Lions International Magazine. Another project that has been doing quite well since June is the Sparkles of Hope bracelet project. The St. John s Health Care Lions has volunteered close to 500 hours to the Canadian Cancer Society by sorting, labelling and packaging the Sparkles of Hope bracelets raising more than $1,000,000 to date and anticipating raising close to $2,000,000 by Christmas. The Club works on this project twice a week and they will continue to do so as long as they are needed to make this a huge success. Below is a note of thanks that The St. John s Health Care Lions Club received from a very grateful patient. The Lions Club served meals while she was staying at the hostel. 9 9 Lions Clubs International Foundation My Fellow Lions, LCIF Those of you who attended our first District Convention in Marystown on October 22-23, 2010 heard my report on behalf of LCIF. I will not rehash what I said there but I do want to draw your attention to two challenges which I extended. Last year the Clubs of District N-4 gave generously to LCIF to the tune of $28, This amount came from 24 or 45.28% of the 53 Active Lions Clubs. My first challenge is for all Lions Clubs to continue to give again this year. My second challenge is to all Lions individually and personally to become Contributing Members of LCIF. The Contributing Membership is an excellent way to raise revenue for LCIF. In recent years Lions Clubs International has only approved direct distribution of pins on a case by case basis. For the Lions Year , however, we are instituting a system that will allow all LCIF Multiple District and District Coordinators to regularly distribute Contributing Member pins at their discretion. In return for a donation of US$20, a Lion will receive a Bronze Contributing Membership pin. If you would like to give more, you could receive Silver (for a donation of US$50) or Gold (for a donation of US$100) Contributing Membership pin. Already 19 Lions have become Contributing Members to LCIF (12 Bronze, 2 Silver, 5 Gold). You, too, can easily become a Contributing Member by contacting me with your name and a cheque for the desired level of contribution. Be sure to use the current LCIF conversion rate. Current Lions exchange rates are updated monthly and may be accessed through the LCI website at: I would also like to share with you the following information which I received from Past International President Judge Brian Stevenson, LCIF Development Advisory Committee for Canada (CA II). He writes, We are in the final stages of establishing a charitable federal corporation with the title Lions of Canada Fund for LCIF that will enable us to issue tax receipts for donations by Canadian citizens and corporations, a step that we believe will greatly increase LCIF s presence and visibility and contributions in Canada. FINALLY Industry Canada has granted Letters Patent for the corporate body known as Lions of Canada Fund for LCIF. The next step is to apply to the Canada Revenue Agency for charitable status. That process will be handled by Past International Director Jack Isaman of Calgary, a Chartered Accountant by profession. You will also be pleased to know that International President Scruggs and Immediate Past International President Wirfs have appointed PID Isaman to serve on the new LCIF Steering Committee. I will keep you apprised of any new information as it becomes available. Let me leave you with some words by Mahatma Gandhi who said, Consciously or unconsciously, every one of us does render some service or other. If we cultivate the habit of doing this service deliberately, our desire for service will steadily grow stronger, and will make, not only our own happiness, but that of the world at large. Yours in Lionism, Herb Lion Herb Burry, PDG PCC District LCIF Coordinator

10 Lions Eyeglass Program Recycles 3,000,000 pair The Calgary Correctional Centre and the Lions Eyeglass Recycling Society recently celebrated the processing and distribution of its three millionth pair of eyewear to bring sight to those in the greatest need throughout the world. It`s a beautiful world. But only if you can see it. The Lion s Recycle for Sight project has made clear vision possible for millions in the developing world. The donated glasses are processed so that mission groups can take ready to wear glasses to developing countries. Free for You Priceless to Them Imagine if you could help a child read, an adult succeed in his job, a senior maintain her independence, and provide a community with more opportunities to grow and thrive. Everyday our recycled eyeglass program do all of this and more. The Lions would like to thank all of you who have donated your gentle used eyeglasses. We encourage everyone to recycle your used glasses to bring sight to those in need. Bernie Gribben Celebrate 25 Years with Lions Quest At the 93rd Lions International Convention in Sydney, Lions Quest celebrated its 25th Year Anniversary. Since 1985, Lions have supported this teacher training and lesson based curriculum for children ages 5-18 that teaches young people the skills needed for success in school and life. The program provides for children s mental health needs by encompassing drug and violence prevention, character education and social and emotional skill building. Teaching these skills to children not only impacts their self confidence and relationship skills but also increases academic achievement. Lions Quest has been translated into 30 languages and is implemented in over 50 countries worldwide. Lions Quest makes a difference. One of the administrators in Maryland, USA commented - I made a decision to implement the Lions Quest curriculum as our exclusive After School intervention offering. The results have been overwhelmingly positive Our young people have been able to read [Lions Quest materials] and understand that they are not alone in the challenges that they face as teenagers. I believe it is important to note that we have seen a marked decrease in student referrals and institutional violations among the students enrolled in the After School program. James I. 11 11 DIABETES AWARENESS Hello fellow Lions, well November is our Diabetes Awareness Month. I would like to hear what your club is doing to help raise awareness about diabetes. At our last convention I had information packets done up for all Lions and Leo Clubs in our district, in those packets were handouts that you could give out to the public however you wish to do, something very simple but very effective in spreading the word about diabetes. This is not the only thing you can do to help out the Canadian Diabetes Association to help them during this month; something else very simple is a clothing drive, all you need is the room for storage. You can also donate money to your local clinic or hold a screening session. All these things require little to no work and very few members, it is also a great way to get publicity for your club and show the community how you are trying to help the Canadian Diabetes Association. There are many other great ideas on the CDA website at take some time out of your day to take a look at the website and see what the CDA is doing across Canada. I would like you to know that the medical costs are two to three times higher for people with diabetes. Costs for medication and supplies range from $1,000 to $15,000 a year, also by 2010, it s estimated that diabetes will cost the Canadian healthcare system $15.6 billion a year and that number will rise to $19.2 billion by So don t forget to donate your money and DON T BE BLIND TO DIABETES. Thank you Lion Michael Foote District Diabetes Awareness Chairperson. STUDY RESULTS DEMONSTRATE GREATER POTENTIAL OF NEW DIABETES THERAPY BEYOND GLUCOSE CONTROL Meta-Analysis Presented at the CDA/CSEM Professional Conference and Annual Meetings Provides Insight into GLP-1 Therapy Advances MISSISSAUGA, ON, Nov. 8 /CNW/ - Recent research results demonstrate that a new treatment approach to diabetes, GLP-1 analogues, not only helps to lower blood glucose levels, but has the added benefit of reducing body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference. "What we saw at the 26 week mark was that those patients with type 2 diabetes being treated with liraglutide, a GLP-1 analogue, achieved significant reductions in both BMI and waist circumference," says Dr. Bernard Zinman, Director, Leadership Sinai Centre for Diabetes, Professor of Medicine, University of Toronto. "In this context, we continue to explore innovations in diabetes management." Victoza(R) Since its approval by Health Canada in May of this year, Victoza(R) (liraglutide) is establishing its place among treatments to effectively manage diabetes. As the first GLP-1 analogue in Canada, Victoza(R) offers the added benefit of delayed gastric emptying and enhanced satiety after meals.(1) To date, more than 2,600 Canadians living with diabetes have received treatment with Victoza(R) Victoza(R) is indicated for once-daily administration for the treatment of adults with type 2 diabetes to improve glycemic control in combination with:(2) - Metformin, when diet and exercise plus maximal tolerated dose of metformin do not achieve adequate glycemic control. - Metformin and a sulfonylurea, when diet and exercise plus dual therapy with metformin and a sulfonylurea do not achieve adequate glycemic control. Continued page 12

12 Continued from page 12 Findings of the study, The Human GLP-1 Analogue, Liraglutide, Improves BMI and Waist Circumference in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes: Meta-analysis of Six Phase 3 Trials, were presented at The Canadian Diabetes Association/The Canadian Society for Endocrinology and Metabolism Professional Conference and Annual Meetings that took place in Edmonton from October 20-23, In addition, Victoza(R) has a low risk of hypoglycemia (dangerously low blood glucose levels), since it only works when the body needs it.(2) Victoza(R) should not be used to treat type 1 diabetes mellitus or diabetic ketoacidosis. Use of Victoza(R) in combination with insulin has not been studied and is therefore not recommended.(2) About Novo Nordisk Canada Inc. 13 13 No Child Without... Claudete E S Coombs, District Chair The Canadian MedicAlert Foundation was established in No Child Without is a charitable program of the MedicAlert Foundation and was established in 2006 with a five year mandate. It s goal is to offer MedicAlert identification and registration to all elementary children in Canada. It is funded through corporate and private donations and sponsorships. Lions Clubs of Canada have become one of the group sponsors. As a result, the Lions emblem will be on any MedicAlert identification provided to children in a school sponsored by Lions. No Child Without is available to students up to age 14. After that, parents can enroll their children in the MedicAlert StudentsFirst program at a special student fee. It is anticipated that in any school population, approximately 5% of the students would meet the medical eligibility for a MedicAlert identification. This service can be provided for $100 per child. If a Lions Club wishes to sponsor a school, the Foundation will determine the fee the Club will pay ($100 X 5% of school population). This fee can be paid in one, or three equal, payments. This is a one time charge which will cover a child the duration of the project ending in 2013, or until the child reaches age 14, whichever comes first. Through this program Lions cannot choose to only pay for individual children. They must pay the full school cost. Current Statistics for District N-4: * 9 Clubs have sponsored schools * 5 additional Clubs have registered their interest in sponsoring a school * 41 schools are enrolled in No Child Without The sponsorship process requires two steps: the interested school is identified and the interested Lions Club is matched to the school. The Club does not make direct contact with the school. The MedicAlert Foundation communicates directly with the School Boards throughout the province. The Boards notifies the Foundation of schools which are interested in being covered by the No Child Without program. These schools are covered as soon as Lions, or other, sponsorship is provided. Lions interested in sponsoring a school should contact the District Chair to forward this to the Foundation. The MedicAlert Foundation then completes the process of making the necessary contacts, setting the fee and providing that information to the Chair, who then notifies the Club of the fee and payment process. If your Club has questions or wants to become involved in sponsoring a school, or if you would like to serve on this District Committee, please contact me via phone or . Sincerely, Claudette gccoombs@nf.sympatico.ca
