1 May Newsle er 2015 Welcome to our May newsletter - This year is going so quickly! We had a great Easter, which began with our family fun day and the famous 'Golden Egg Hunt'. The young people's activity sessions were also packed full of fun as always. We also took a small group to the peak district for a wonderful walking trip to see if it was something we could add to the summer activities. This was a massive success so keep your eyes out for more during the summer! We have 2 exciting activities for you to join in with at ½ term. We are going back to Drayton Manor theme park and zoo following our very popular and successful trip last year. See page 4 to find out more. Make sure you book quickly as it will be first come first served. Speak to your Coach team about payment op ons. Have you seen our totalizer at the centre? We have been fundraising really hard to raise the 10,000 we need towards the cost of activities so that our Sumer Programme can go ahead as usual, a HUGE thank you to everyone who has supported us so far. See page 11/12 for the next events This year instead of a Summer Ball our BIG Fundraiser is a FAMILY FUNDAY for everyone to take part in at Prestwold Hall. Please support us and bring along your friends and family for what promises to be a fantastic day out, with a sponsored ride and glide for children and young people to take part in and raise some money towards their activities. See page 5 for lots more details. 2 ADHD Friendly Transition Moving from one year group to another or to a new school child can be a very difficult me for your child and for you!! IT S NEVER TOO EARLY TO START prepara on for transi on should begin straight a er ½ term Above all, focus on your child's needs. Make sure that you are prepared well before the holiday starts. Understand your child s learning needs and behaviours, and then list the things that he or she needs to help them learn be er. Which class room and teacher will he have? ADHD friendly School Does school understand him and his ADHD? I really want him to be happy and learn Make sure that your child has had ample opportunity to visit their new classroom/school, ask for addi onal visits to ensure that they are familiar with where they are going. Ask for photographs of the school so that you can make a social story book, include photographs of the entrance, toilets the playground and dining room Is the school easy to get around, do they provide a map or a guide to help your child find their way, ask what is the policy if your child gets lost and is late for a lesson remember it will take much longer for them to find their way around the building than other children. ASK for a map so that you can prac ce and talk about where the key areas are 2

3 ADHD Friendly Transition What is the homework policy? Will teachers write homework down for your child? do they have a homework club, do they post informa on about homework on the website so you can check it out? If not, is something that they would consider? Prac ce doing some homework over the summer it will make it much easier for your child if you con nue reading and doing some wri ng and maths so they don t forget what they are doing!!! What arrangements are there for breaks and lunch mes? What are the arrangements for queuing? Do they change lunch rotas weekly, daily, termly? What are the consequences of them going at the wrong me? If your child is going to need to queue take them out and about to prac ce at the shops or at the bank. If you are going to send pack lunch, try out different fillings over the holidays to make sure they will eat well, consider some of the more ADHD Friendly foods How can you pass on informa on to teachers about the needs of your child to help him / her to learn successfully? Plan to use a diary from the start and let school know if you have had any issues on the lead up to going back to school How flexible are they for individual needs? Will they adapt lessons / teaching to accommodate your child s learning style? Will they allow your child to use a tape recorder rather than make notes, or use a laptop in the classroom? If your child can use things to help in the classroom, get them at the beginning of the holiday so that they can prac ce using them and be confident before they are in the classroom.do they allow tangles or other concentra on aids to be used in the classroom during lessons? If so make sure you have a good supply Suggest the use of me out cards about Make sure you have all their uniform, school bag and equipment in plenty of me so they don t panic about not being ready 3
