Conducted among staff, the purpose of the survey is to identify ways employees can feel supported and to strengthen engagement across our workforce. Your contribution to this survey is critical in gaining insight into understanding employee satisfaction and it will assist in directing future Human Resource programs. The survey will be ed Friday, September 28th and will be concluded after one week. Please watch your inbox for the Survey Monkey. We look forward to your feedback! -Nate Aging & Disability Resource Center Final Affairs Conference: October 4 th at St. Luke s United Methodist Church in Frederic Final Affairs is one of our most popular public education events. It is an event dedicated to educating and discussing issues related to end-of-life decisions. We held our first one in the fall of 2012 in a collaborative effort with UW Extension. It was a huge success with over 80 in attendance. It continues to be just as popular every year since. This year our topics include: Self Care for mental, physical and emotional health as you age, Aging where you call home, Long Term Care Planning, estate planning, funeral pre-planning and Alzheimer s disease education. Discover the importance of opening the end-of-life care conversation with family members and health care providers and receiving valuable information and practical advice from local professionals. 5 Issue 53 Page 5 Kevin Schoessow, Area Agriculture Development Agent for Burnett, Sawyer and Washburn County has teamed up with UW-Extension FoodWise Nutrition educator Julie Yezek and a several Burnett County food shelves to share the bounty and the education that is a direct result of the Seed to Kitchen Collaborative. Schoessow, whose office is located at the Spooner Agricultural Research Station, is collaborating with researchers from UW- Madison on an organically grown vegetable variety trial on the Station. This research is focused on evaluating newly released or soon to be released vegetable varieties that are suited for fresh eating and the local food market. In addition to yield and other production characteristics the project is also getting feedback from local growers, chefs and eaters about culinary attributes of the varieties. A huge by-product of the Seed to Kitchen vegetable research project is the 1,000s of pounds of produce that is generated from the one-acre organically manage research plot. With the help of UW-Extension Master Gardener Volunteers and other volunteers, Kevin is committed to see this food get in the hands and mouths of Burnett County residents. Produce, namely, cucumbers, kale, tomatoes, peppers, squash and potatoes are being channeled to Burnett County food shelves, pantries, senior centers, tribal centers and local schools. All the produce comes with a teachable moment for those who care to listen or follow up. Julie Yezek engaged her clientele on the nutritional aspects of eating and cooking with local food and finds the white cucumbers especially fun to use in her demonstrations! Since all the varieties being evaluated are well suited for our short growing season and in some cases are well suited for small spaces, eaters are encouraged to consider growing their own produce. Kevin and Master Gardener Volunteers are quick to point out that gardening does not have to be a big challenging endeavor. In addition to the donated produce, Kevin is partnering with local school Family and Consumer Education (FACE) teachers and local chefs to engage conversations about local food systems and in the culinary benefits of seasonal local food. 6 Issue 53 Page 6 Burnett County Welcomes... I am currently working as the Tax Deed Specialist and am very excited to be a part of the team in the Treasurer s office. I reside in Webster with my better half and enjoy spending my free time hunting, fishing and relaxing in the outdoors. When I am not relaxing I am on the go with our four grandchildren, Ciara (13), Nolan (7), Tucker (5), and Lucy (4), by attending school activities, reading books, but more importantly, just spending family time. Jayne Schwartz Noah Horsch has been our Forestry & Recreational Officer for two summers and has most recently taken a position as a Deputy Sheriff. We are excited to have Noah on board full time. Noah Horsch I am working as a Dispatcher/ Jailer. I attended Rasmussen College where I obtained my degree in Criminal Justice. I am originally from Hastings, Minnesota and enjoy hunting and fishing in my free time. Fall is my favorite time of year, I enjoy doing a haunted barn or trail for my Grandkids. Kathy Wente has worked for the ADRC as a Substitute Cook since February and we are delighted that she has recently accepted the position of Meal Site Manager / Lead Cook for the A& H site.
