1 PARKER COUNTY AMERICAN LEGION POST CARTWRIGHT PARK ROAD WEATHERFORD, TEXAS (87) SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 206 Post 63 Times News from the Commander Legionnaires and family members, I am looking forward to this year with great anticipation of the success we will share as a Post Family. We have a lot to look forward to with this Family and need to strive to continue our cooperation in the future. The Post Veteran s Park committee just hosted a luncheon with the Law Offices of Eggleston and King held at Flame s restaurant where we had George P. Bush as our keynote speaker. This luncheon was to help in funding the Park s need of an obelisk, pavilion and flagpoles. We have our first order of donor bricks for the Walk-of-Honor to be placed in the park. As soon as we get the concrete in place for the first part of the walk we will start laying the bricks. I will be looking for volunteers in this endeavor. As most of you have received your renewal letters, I appreciate all that have renewed and look forward to seeing more renew in the next month. This benefits the Post and establishes your standing as an Early Bird. Your membership card will be marked with a stamp that enables you to receive a free steak dinner on October 28th at the Post. To receive a stamp your membership must be paid or postmarked by September 30th. Continued on Page 4 EARLY BIRD GETS THE STEAK! ALL Legion Family members that renew their membership by September 30th will received a FREE steak dinner on October 28th at 6:00 p.m. Be a part of our membership drive and renew today! For more information and to RSVP please contact the Post Adjutant. 2 News from the Adjutant Chaplain s Corner Greetings to All, As the new year begins, an enormous amount of activities are now scheduled. Those of us who have lived long enough to be fodder for the cannons of life have special tasks to accomplish. As we are capable, we must continue to help all others. We are tasked with reaching down to pick up what is needed, and we are tasked to lead and follow. As an organization one of our goals is to help all veterans. It is easy to get wrapped up in our own problems. It is more difficult to look past ourselves to where others stand in their own quicksand. And even harder to step up and reach out. One person has a more difficulty than a group. We are each a one person unit, but our post is a group. The American Legion is even a bigger group. We need the group dynamic to accomplish tasks. We need all the members of Post 63 for the Veteran s Day Parade, we need all for the Soldier s Memorial Park, and we need all for every other activity we schedule. To be part of the American Legion, we must pay our annual dues. This small task is encouraged by the Early Bird status we provide. This status establishes a FREE steak dinner at the post. Every regular member that pays their $35 annual dues before September 30 is eligible for a free steak dinner on October 28. With a post our size, we should be in an overflow mode that night. I am going to close this article with a question. Why don t more members attend the Friday evening meal? The prices range from $2 to $7 per person. It is easy to find out the various menus, but why worry? The food, fellowship, and fun is more than worth the price. Our post is a family post not a bar post and all are welcome. Smoking is not allowed inside the building, but we do provide a covered patio where smoking is allowed. Since smoking is not allowed inside the Weatherford city limits, tell me the difference. To learn who the members are, it is easy in the fun atmosphere of the canteen. Give it a try before making a decision. Guests are welcome, bring a friend. Greetings, As we start to get closer to the Holidays, we are also getting closer to our Veterans Day Parade. Please mark your calendars. I would love to see you climb on a float and see how much Parker County appreciates what you did for your country. If you have any free time, we could really use your help on the planning committee as well. I would also ask that you keep your Legion Family in your prayers. Many of us are marching through some physically tough times and need all the prayers we can get. Check out the new calendar! You may like what you see. I hope to see you soon. Yours in Service, Tommy Creel Post 63 Chaplain Sons of the American Legion As a new year begins I find myself in wonder. As my junior year of high school has just begun, I can t believe that I am not only a junior but the newly elected Squadron 63 Commander. I look forward to this journey and know that good things will continue to come not only to the Squadron, but to our Post Family as well. I encourage all of our members and their families to come out to the Post and see the great strides that we make for our Veterans. As my mom says, It takes a team to do great things for others. For God & Country Taylor Watson Squadron 63 Commander We are a band of brothers, we are a family, and we are worth knowing! 3 American Legion Auxiliary From the Chaplain s Desk Here we are again, a start to another busy year for our Ladies Auxiliary. Please check out the Monthly calendar with your newsletter and see what events and meetings, or conventions we are having for the next two months. Also keep reading your weekly s with updates of what is happening at our post and what our Auxiliary is doing in our community. If you can make the September st meeting at 7:00 pm and meet some of the new officers who have stepped up this year to help support our efforts of Serving the Parker County veterans. An update on our Summer Sun Screen and Lip balm drive for the Troops. We were able to send off 6 boxes of sunscreen and candy with notes from local children, and a thank you letter from our unit. This was well supported by the whole Post family. Thank you to all who donated and supported this effort. Please also keep in mind that Halloween is just around the corner and we will need to find a new address of a solider who is stationed overseas, e.g: Afghanistan, or close by, so we can send the candy we collect for the troops. Please let me know if you know anyone or have a family member overseas. Just a reminder, that our membership dues are now being accepted for the 207 year. We now have a P.O. Box for all our correspondence and dues. Please send all of your correspondence to P.O. Box 2829, Weatherford, Texas Also our junior membership dues are only $5.00 per year. Please register your granddaughters today. Ladies I look forward to a great year as we follow our Department presidents theme this year of BEE's as we BUZZ around Parker County showing our American Legion Auxiliary pride and support our American Legion Post 63 family. For God and Country Kay Raynel Unit 63 President Find Us on FACEBOOK: Parker County American Legion Post 63 American Legion Auxiliary Unit 63 American Legion Riders Post 63 Weatherford Texas Parker County Veteran Memorial Park As the outgoing Chaplain for Unit 63, I just want to say Thank You to my Unit for backing me during the past two years in office; My Unit is the greatest ever! So many challenges during this time in office in our world, our state, and our community. I had the privilege of saying the blessing for our meal at the installation ceremonies of our newly elected officers. It was a great blessing to hear the amen s in the room. Many are in need of prayer and so often we do not take the time to just say a quick short prayer for each other. I ask that we continue to pray for each other and for all the ones in our Post Family that need it. Always praying for our Veteran s and their families. Nancy Cobb Unit 63 Chaplain ALA Unit 63 Junior News Grandparents, Mothers and Juniors our goal for the next two months will be to work on our Americanism patch, please try to work on at least two activities from your grade level, and see if we can complete them, or get really close. If you have time for more activities - thanks and well done - so very proud of you. If you are a Grandparent and would like to work this Junior Patch program with your granddaughters, please let me know and I will get you the Paperwork you will need to help your granddaughter to know more about our great organization and what we do for our Veterans. As we have our grandchildren so spread out around the county and state, we started to do a virtual type of group and encourage everyone to be involved. Even with only 30 minutes once a week, you will be amazed what can be accomplished. Please call me if you have any questions anytime. 7th District Fall Convention Our 7th District Fall Convention is October 22nd and 23rd in Mineral Wells, Post 75, and will soon be upon us. I encourage all of our Post Family members to attend this great event. There is always something new to learn when coming to convention and it is also a great way to meet other Legion family members throughout the District. If you wish to attend and or want more information, please contact the Post Adjutant Vaughn Oliver or me at rachaelmwatson@yahoo.com. Rachael M. Watson 7th District President PAGE 3

In closing, I encourage all members of this great organization to attend at least one meeting and find out what is happening in your community and the youth programs we are actively supporting. Until the next newsletter may your future be bright, your mind sharp and your health be the best it has ever been. I wish all a cool end of summer and a fantastic fall.
