1 Voice of the Vets Sidney American Legion Post 217 NEWSLETTER March April 2018 Sidney, OH American Legion Post 217 Due to other obligations Larry Spence resigned as Post Commander at the regular meeting on 20 February The membership, at the meeting, voted to accept Jim Moorman s offer to step up to be the Commander until election of officers in June. Along with a new Commander, Rick Lunsford was voted to be 1st Vice Commander for the same period of time. This brings up an important point. We will have election of officers in June. It would be nice to see some different members consider stepping up to run for office. You would have the support of those who have held the positions in the past but more importantly, with any organization fresh ideas always adds new life. Please consider running for office. TRUSTEE CORNER Welcome To Post 217.Yes, you see this posted EVERY day on the tripod in the entry. Whether Veteran, SAL, Auxiliary, guests, card clubs, or meeting attendees we strive to keep YOUR Post clean and appealing to anyone who comes through the door. Without exception, to all those who help out with various activities brunches, chicken frys, fish frys, funeral details, funeral memorial dinners, the list goes on.. Thank you!!! The Trustees have been getting the men s restroom in the canteen upgraded. Close to being finished. Getting the powered vents working again should be completed soon by an outside source. (Continued on Pg. 2) Auxiliary Unit 217 President Shelia Nuss Is warm weather ever going to get here? Easter is around the corner and I hope everyone will gather at the Auxiliary s annual Brunch on Palm Sunday. We always have a wonderful variety of food for everyone to enjoy. Take mom and family to our Brunch and help us to support our Legion families while enjoying a great meal. This is one of our fund raisers during the year. We will soon have our Auxiliary Scholarships available in the canteen. One of the qualifications for this scholarship, you must be a second year student in an accredited college. More information is on the scholarship form. (SON OF THE AMERICAN LEGION)?? Membership is open to males of all ages whose parents or grandparents served in the U.S. military and eligible for American Legion membership. Annual dues are only $25. Anyone who would like to become part of this important group within The American Legion may call or come into the Post for an application. MARK YOUR CALENDARS! Future brunches are scheduled for Palm Sunday, March 25 (Ladies Auxiliary), April 8 (Trustees), and Mother s Day, May 13, which is still being planned. Trustees meet the fourth Monday of each month. Any paid-up member(s) are always welcome to attend if you have legitimate concerns. Come to our meetings that are held the second Monday of each month at 7:00 pm. Become an active member and PAY IT FORWARD!...by helping our veterans and their families, and meet new friends, hang out with old ones and enjoy wonderful desserts. The list is still posted on the bulletin board and I will be sending out a POST notice about the missed renewals in the near future. We need members.tell a buddy..bring a friend..to Post 217! Your Commander, Jim Moorman GIFTS FOR YANKS FUNDRAISER Legion family members, a heartfelt thank you is extended for your continued support of our annual fundraiser to help our veterans who are in Ohio s state hospitals, VA Medical Centers, outpatient clinics and the Ohio Veteran s Homes. This is one of the many outreaches we do as a Post to support our veterans, their families and our community. All of the funds collected for this project are forwarded to the Department of Ohio American Legion to be distributed for projects for our veterans in Ohio. The winners of the 2017 Raffle were Ron Laughlin, Sidney; Jim Elsass, Sidney; Mike Hayes, Sidney; Sandy Fair, Sidney and Fred Ely, Sidney. Because of everyone s generosity and support we were able to send $5,000 to the Department of Ohio American Legion for the Gifts for Yanks project. Rick Lunsford, Chairman ATTENTION!!! In an effort to save money, we are hoping to end the mass mailing of the newsletter. Each time we do this, it costs about $ That is $3, a year! There will now be three different ways to get the newsletter 1. Pick it up at the Post 2. Look at it on our website at 3. Juniors of the American Legion Auxiliary Juniors continue to assist with their Post Family Brunches & also keeping the POW/MIA Table in respectable order. 3 POST 217 HALL RENTAL Whether 50 guests or 250, we offer a spacious and easily accessible venue to make your event picture perfect! Smaller banquet room for up to 25 guests available for showers and parties. Many are under the belief that a coin has two sides but that s not true. It has three. The front, the back and the edge. As a Post that is constantly trying to maintain its stronghold as a Veterans club, living on the edge daily is a challenge. Some of the challenges we face on a daily basis is the lack of member volunteers. The strength of our Post and canteen activities relies on its members Veteran, Auxiliary and Sons of the Legion. Members who are willing to donate their time to help the Post continue with its veteran and community service. Volunteering your time supporting monthly dinner events such as chicken and fish frys, prime rib night, pizza & wing Thursdays, and other special events contributes to the continued success of Post 217. Please contact the Post with your name and phone number as we build a list of volunteers we can call on from time to time to assist with numerous events. Remember Volunteering is at the very core of being a human. No one has made it through life without someone else s help. We need you to help us be successful. Won t you begin sharing your time with Post 217 today? I want to take a minute to recognize Elizabeth Allenbaugh, a Sophomore at Sidney High School, who has been volunteering her time to assist with Pizza/wing nights. Elizabeth s hard work, positive attitude and dedication is greatly appreciated. Please join me in welcoming a new member to our team, Heather Lutz, who has joined Post 217 as a bartender.
