1 WEST PASCO/TARPON SPRINGS 0777 NEWSLETTER AA Hotline AL-Anon Hotline M April 2014 Celebrate Founders Day June 7, :00 Noon to 4:00 PM St. Thomas Aquinas Church Old CR 54, New Port Richey, FL Food: Hot Dogs, Buns, Coffee provided by District 15- Soda and Water may be purchased BRING A side Dish or dessert to share. Old Timer Speakers Contacts: Ethel D or Clare D Step 4: Made a searching and fearless and moral inventory of ourselves. My name is Jill and I am an alcoholic. When I came into AA I wasn t too sure if that was the case. I was in a treatment center in Greenwich, CT for 21 days in January of My sobriety date is November 5, What I learned was very simple, if alcohol affects your life and your behavior in any way, chances are you are an alcoholic. By the time I reached the Greenwich Unit my chart said chronic alcoholism. My first thought was, well if you re going to be that serious, I better listen. I was thirty years old. I had an apartment, a temporary job and plenty of friends, or so I thought. My problem was I felt that everything that had ever happened to me was not my fault. If you were adopted into an alcoholic family, you would drink too. I never had a chance to do the right thing (or so I thought) because of all the mixed messages I received when I was growing up. It was everyone else s doing, not mine. I was more of a periodic, but once I started to drink I had no control over what happened to me. I feel that before I picked up a drink, I had all the ism s. One thing I did realize when I got out of treatment was that I liked AA. I liked the people, I liked the honesty and sharing as long as I didn t have to say a word. My first sponsor was a counselor and a recovering alcoholic. She attempted to break down the walls that I had put up around myself. We started to go through the steps, without my realizing it. The first thing she told me was I had to take responsibility for my own actions. That was a biggie. She had me write a fourth step and the first time around I wrote down all the things people had done to me. I will never forget when she point blank told me I had to take responsibility for my own actions. I was astounded. Slowly but surely I started to see where I had played a part in some of the situations I found myself in. She let me know that I had a disease, and I was not a bad person, but a sick person. The people I thought were bad had their own set of problems. Each member of Alcoholics Anonymous is but a small part of a GREAT whole. AA must continue to live or most of us will surely die. Hence our common welfare comes first but individual welfare follows close Afterwards Please Support your Central Office hotline staff for: 2 shifts daily Mon.-Fri. 10 AM 1:30 PM or 1:30 PM 5 PM Contact Central Office for more information (727) Table of Contents Anniversaries 3 Intergroup Info 4 Calendar of Events 5 Birthday Club 6 Volume 13 Issue 4 1
2 Over the first few years, I did several Fourth steps. I was only as sick as my secrets. The more I let go the healthier I became. Anger, fear, anxiety stood out big time. I m not sure if I did everything the conventional way, but I started loosing all of the traits that were holding me back. My first sponsor helped me see myself and life for what it really is. I met my husband in the rooms. I had decided I wasn t going to get married and that was okay. We met at an AA dance and the rest is history. What I learned was everything I thought was going to happen didn t and what I didn t expect did. We will be married 28 years in June. The good news was we both wanted to stay sober, we both had our own programs, and one advantage to being married to someone in the rooms is they understand when you say I need a meeting. When we moved to Florida I had 22 years in the rooms. I left an area where everyone knew me and I almost felt like a newcomer. We immediately called the hotline to get connected. I went to 90 meetings in 90 days. Since I came to Florida, I have retired which is great because it s given me the opportunity to give back what was so freely given to me when I first came in. I love it down here and know that my Higher Power, who I choose to call God, wants me here. Jill L.
