2 The service Introduction Glynis Cameron is registered to provide a childminding service for up to eight children under the age of 16 of whom no more than three are not yet attending primary school and of whom no more than one is under 12 months of age. She works flexibly to meet the needs of families and also provides a service to children through the community childminding service in conjunction with Angus social work department. Mrs Cameron employs an assistant - her daughter in law - who looks after the children occasionally when Mrs Cameron has appointments to attend, for example the dentist if treatment is required. This service has been registered since April The service is provided from the childminders own home in a quiet residential area in the Angus town of Kirriemuir. The home is well maintained and offers comfortable facilities for children to experience a range of indoor and outdoor play experiences. What we did during our inspection We wrote this report following a short notice announced inspection, which took place between 9.05am and 10.55am on 7 July The inspection was carried out by a Care Inspectorate Early Years Inspector. During this inspection we spoke with the childminder and the minded child present. We observed the care given by the childminder and looked at a number of documents including health and safety records, planning tools and training certificates. We also check services are meeting the principles of Getting it Right For Every Child also known as (GIRFEC), Scotland's national approach to improving outcomes and wellbeing for children by offering the right help at the right time from the right people. It supports them and their parent(s) to work with the services that can help them. There are eight wellbeing indicators at the heart of Getting It Right For Every Child: safe, healthy, achieving, nurtured, active, respected, responsible and included. Views of people using the service There was a 2-year-old child present during the inspection. We saw him enjoy his snack and play with a toy aeroplane which was one of his favourite toys. The childminder encouraged and reassured the child throughout the inspection as he was unsure of having visitors in the house. We sent the childminder care standards questionnaires to distribute to parents. Parents returned three completed questionnaires before the inspection. All parents were very happy with the care and support the childminder provided. Additional comments included: "My child enjoys outdoor activities. Glynis takes him to the woods everyday." "Glynis takes the children out at every opportunity. They have a daily walk in the woods and go shopping together." for Cameron, Glynis page 2 of 10

3 "Glynis has always provided an excellent level of care for my daughter. she has done since (X) was 2 years of age, fulltime till now where she is 8 and a few hours after school. She has adapted where needed and always taken mine and my daughter's views into account which reflects in the care she provides. My daughter is very happy with the service and involved in her service provided by Glynis. She regards Glynis as a close a close family friend. Glynis is trustworthy and reliable and we have never had any issues or concerns. Glynis has gone above and beyond for my daughter." Self assessment The Care Inspectorate received a fully completed self assessment from the childminder. The provider identified what they thought the service did well and areas for improvement. The provider told us how the parents and children had taken part in the self-assessment process and how their feedback directed the development of the plans for improving the service. What the service did well The childminder provides a warm and welcoming environment for children and their families. She communicates effectively with parents who are very pleased with the service provided. 4 From this inspection we graded this service as: Quality of care and support Quality of environment Quality of staffing Quality of management and leadership 5 - Very Good 5 - Very Good 5 - Very Good Quality of care and support Findings from the inspection The childminder provided very good opportunities for children and their families to be actively involved in the service by listening to and acting on any views and suggestions and providing them with information and choices. Throughout our time in the childminder's home we observed that the minded child had a positive relationship with her. She reassured, encouraged and praised the child throughout the inspection to help him settle as he wary of unknown visitors to the house. The childminder was able to discuss how she catered for and supported children's individual needs and daily routines. She had gathered information about the individual children and their routines. We encouraged the childminder to further develop the children's personal plans by introducing her GIRFEC knowledge. The childminder had a very good understanding of what she would do if she had concerns about a child's welfare. A relevant child protection policy informed parents of the procedure the childminder would follow and the contact details for the relevant agencies. She had attended training two years ago and was aware this was to be refreshed in a year's time. The childminder gave clear examples of how she supported children in her care to be aware of risks out in the community and to keep themselves safe. The childminder provided a nurturing environment and promoted healthy lifestyles. She administered prescribed medication and we asked her to update her record by adding in and recording the reason medication was being given and the time the medication was last given to the child before they came into the service. The record would them reflect the most recent guidance. The childminder provided snacks and lunches as did the parents if they wished. The childminder took into consideration the children's likes/dislikes and nutritional guidance when planning and preparing snacks and lunches. We observed the child enjoy a banana and biscuit for snack during our visit. The childminder had registered as a food provider. Regular active play opportunities helped the children to develop their physical skills and enjoy being in the fresh air. They went for walks in the woods, played in the garden and the parks, visited the farm with the puppies, piglets and lambs and went to the bird preserve to see where the beavers had been. for Cameron, Glynis page 4 of 10

5 Requirements Number of requirements: 0 Recommendations Number of recommendations: 0 Grade: 5 - very good Quality of environment Findings from the inspection We found the childminder provided a warm, welcoming, child friendly environment for the children who used her service. Minded children played with their toys and games on the ground floor of the house which included the living room and kitchen. They also had access to a fully enclosed rear garden. The childminder discussed how she made sure children were cared for in a safe environment. Visual risk assessments were carried out daily and written risk assessments were in place for all areas of the childminding environment. Daily cleaning chores helped to keep the home clean and the childminder washed the toys and equipment regularly while checking them to ensure they remained safe for the children to use. We saw the toys were suitable for the age and stage of the child's development and interests. The toys were stored so that the child could make choices easily about what he wanted to play with. The environment supported children's play and independence well. The childminder took a number of steps to minimise the spread of infection. The childminder washed her hands and supported the child to wash his hands before snack. Children were also encouraged to wash their hands after toileting and playing in the garden. The childminder confirmed she wore disposable aprons and gloves when nappy changing or dealing with bodily fluids. The children had access to the rear garden which was being made more child friendly. The grass had been lifted and the childminder had yet to decide whether it would be paved or have decking laid. A corner of the garden had been developed into a fruit and vegetable patch. We saw photographs of the children digging up the potatoes they had helped to sow previously. Accidents and incidents were recorded and the parents signed the record and received a copy for their own information. for Cameron, Glynis page 5 of 10

She did so occasionally to cover when the childminder had an appointment to attend, such as the hospital or dentist. The childminder told us her assistant would also pick up children from nursery/school if the childminder was running late to avoid the children having to wait around for the childminder to arrive. Parents confirmed the childminder's assistant worked occasionally and that they were happy for this arrangement to be in place. The assistant had been PVG checked before starting to work at the service to ensure the safety and protection of the children. Her friendly, reassuring and professional manner meant that she provided a high quality service that was supportive and caring to the families she worked with. The importance of working in partnership with children and their families was valued. The childminder was wellinformed about children's needs and development. We found her to be caring, considerate and she had a professional manner at all times. for Cameron, Glynis page 6 of 10

7 The childminder told us she kept up to date with best practice and legislation in a variety of ways, for example, through her Scottish Childminding Association (SCMA) membership, Care Inspectorate magazines and Hub, researching on the internet and the Community Childminding Co-ordinator. The childminder spoke with parents and children daily and encouraged them to share their views and suggestions on service improvement. Formal feedback was gained through parent and children's questionnaires. Policies and procedures were regularly reviewed and updated as required and shared with parents. A complaints procedure was in place and the parents and carers were made of this when they started using the service. The contact details for the Care Inspectorate were included should parents have any concerns or complaints they felt they needed to be taken further. The childminder was committed to her professional development and had recently refreshed her first aid to ensure that she continued to respond appropriately to accidents and emergency situations. She had undertaken e-learning modules, such as, Babies in Mind, Getting It Right For Every Child (GIRFEC) and Caring for Vulnerable Children. The childminder was about to start another online course in Food and Nutrition which she thought would be of benefit to her service and practice.
