1 ACEC-BC YPG QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER FOURTH QUARTER 2017 FOREWORD Zahra Pirani, Chair, ACEC-BC Provincial Committee This newsletter is the fourth and last newsletter to be circulated by the 2016 / 2017 ACEC-BC Young s Group (YPG) Steering Committee. In this newsletter, we will celebrate this year s accomplishments and introduce next year s committee members. The ACEC-BC YPG Steering Committee is currently comprised of 26 young consulting engineering professionals, organized into an overarching Provincial Committee, four Regional Subcommittees (based out of the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island, Okanagan, and Prince George), a Conference Planning Subcommittee, and representatives on each of ACEC-BC s Mainline Committees. The Prince George Regional Subcommittee and the Conference Planning Subcommittee were new additions this year. With support from ACEC-BC staff, the YPG Steering Committee enthusiastically planned, delivered, and supported a number programs and services that strengthened ACEC-BC connections with hundreds of young professionals, students (both post-secondary and elementary-age), and members of the public. These events were summarized and showcased in quarterly newsletters published by the YPG, and included: The First Annual YPG Conference Fifteen Breakfast Seminars throughout BC Twelve Networking Events throughout BC Participation in Ten Student Outreach Events at BCIT, UBC, UBCO, and UVic. 3 The first annual ACEC-BC YPG Conference was held on Thursday May 11th and Friday May 12th, The event received tremendous interest and support from both Young s and the member companies of ACEC-BC, with both registration and corporate sponsorship selling out in advance of the conference. A total of 62 YPs attended the conference from throughout the province, including representatives from Northern BC and Vancouver Island. The conference kicked off with a war game networking event at Elephant & Castle. The event combined an interactive business strategy contest with an opportunity to network with YPs from throughout the province. The event involved teams of YPs acting as developers, employees of design firms, government representatives, educational institution representatives, and news reporters, all working through the procurement process to build a new City Hall for Vancouver. The game took many twists and turns and everyone was on the edge of their seats when finding out who the YP team representing the client would select as the preferred proponent at the end of the event. The conference continued Friday morning with an opening keynote by Ralph Kison who set the tone for the day with his presentation What is Leadership. The day s agenda continued with an interactive presentation on relationship experience and presentations on building a successful team, experiences on a major project, and the basics of business development. The day also included a panel discussion on How to Set Yourself up to Succeed and A Day in the Life of a Leader. Our speakers included young leaders, senior project managers, business development leaders, senior vice presidents and chief executive officers of some of BC s leading consulting engineering firms. The event was culminated by our closing keynote speech by executive coach Brian Conlin. ACEC-BC YPG FIRST ANNUAL CONFERENCE Fantastic Turn Out by Young s! Based on the interest from YPs and the industry in the inaugural ACEC-BC YPG Conference, we look forward to next year s conference where we will build upon our experiences from this year and expand the registration limit. 5 VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES To carry on our annual summer tradition, we will be volunteering with Science World s summer camps from July 1st to August 25th! The summer camps are hosted by Science World for Tween/Teens who attend the camp for one week Science world runs the same program for each of the 8 weeks to reach a variety of kids. This year we will be directing the camp attendees in an earthquake session about the effects of liquefaction and the different types of earthquakes. The session will include the kids building a structure with earthquake and liquefaction in mind. The building materials will include readily available construction materials such as toothpicks, gummy candies, rocks, and construction paper. Following the construction, our volunteers will help judge and comment on the structures before taking them to the shake-table for testing! If you would like to volunteer to help with this great event (you do not have to be structural or geotechnical to do so!) please dmarchand@binnie.com. The camps run on Tuesdays from 2:30 to 4:00pm from July 1 August 25 (8 weeks). You can volunteer for just one week to as many as you like! IN OTHER EXCITING NEWS. ACEC-BC PRINCE GEORGE SUBCOMMITTEE UPDATES On June 7, 2017 the YPG in Prince George hosted their first ACEC-BC YPG event. The weather was fantastic, which made it perfect for their patio venue. With a smaller group of ACEC-BC member firms, a turnout of 10 was expected to be a success. However, that was not met - it was exceeded! There was representation from 5 of the 7 ACEC-BC member firms in Prince George. The event included a brief outline on ACEC-BC and what the local subcommittee plans to offer to the Prince George Young s. The event was very well received and many are looking forward to more. Big thanks go out to all involved to get this initiative started in Prince George. Stay tuned for more events in the coming year!
