And for that: I am responsible. What a beautiful, powerful and personal action statement to connect each of us with AA s enduring legacy of service. A turning point in sobriety for each of us is having the willingness to figure out where we can fit into the overall service structure of AA, then taking the action to do it. Service in AA takes on easily a hundred forms. It seems to be a spiritual necessity that we each to give back what has been so freely given to us. AA has long encouraged a spirit of rotation in service positions. Rotation helps us to keep principles before personalities and gives newcomers openings to fill. For me in early sobriety, rinsing out coffee pots quickly got me out of my own self - pity and morose thinking. Greeting home group members at the door helped me build relationships and feel more part of. Secretary commitments for a few quarters bonded me even closer to my group. Later I joined others to take meetings to desperate souls in area detox hospitals. That led to other service commitments in helping to organize others in Metrolina Intergroup s Treatment Facilities Committee. Along the way I ve gotten to sponsor men, start a step study and help get a new home group off the ground. As I read through the letters on the following pages from the service committee chairs, I am struck with the rich and meaningful opportunities that Intergroup creates for individual AA members across our region. All service work is important. It really does take all of us continuously engaged in those hundred plus service roles to assure that AA will always be strong in its mission to carry its message to the alcoholic who still suffers. 2 COMMITTEE REPORTS CPC/PI (Cooperating with the Professional Community/Public Information) Hello family and friends, Once again it is time for our CPC/PI report and I hope and pray all are well, sober, and clean. We are happy to report that our commitments with the Anuvia DWI class and the Carolinas College of Health Sciences nursing program are continuing. We will be stepping up our information campaign (billboards, etc.) with plans to get Big Books and literature into the Mecklenburg County Public Libraries. We will have an information table at the upcoming open house event at the Metrolina Intergroup office on March 17 th. I hope to see and meet many of you there. I will also be meeting with the person who was very instrumental in getting the billboards up to see what else we can do to get information about Alcoholics Anonymous out to the public. We re making plans for a breakfast meeting and also a workshop. Our next CPC/PI committee meeting will be the last Saturday of the month (the 24 th of 10:00 am) at the Metrolina Intergroup office. If you would like to get involved, please plan to attend the committee meeting. We would love to help you find a place to be of meaningful service! Sincerely, Byron B., chair Corrections Committee Hello all. We continue to make progress on filling our jail obligations for the men in Jail Central and the women in Jail North, but we need your help. We could really be set if we had four more men and four more women who are willing to dedicate themselves to a meeting or two per month and carry out the important task of sharing our experience with the disease of alcoholism and our solution to it with the incarcerated alcoholic. We encourage any interested AAs to contact Sandy or Evan with any questions that you may have. Requirements to serve in jails are one year of sobriety, a sponsor, a home group, no felonies, and no class I or II misdemeanors in the past five years. This is fulfilling work and it is worth the effort.

3 Our committee was represented at the state corrections convention, titled Freedom from Bondage, the weekend of March 10 th in Aberdeen. We ll report on that in the next issue of 20/20. There are ways other than leading meetings in facilities to be involved Corrections Committee 12 step work. There is the Prerelease Program, where you will contact an inside AA member by letter a few weeks before their release date, and you and another AA get them to a meeting within 24 to 48 hours after their release. This is a type of 12 th step call. The committee member stays engaged with the inmate typically through helping him or her to find a sponsor. Corrections Correspondence is where an AA on the outside will share experience, strength, and hope with an AA member on the inside via written letter. This is arranged through GSO and is one of the most productive ways for individual AA members to carry the message to inmates who are confined. To protect our members, we advise these letterwriters to use the Intergroup s address as a return address rather than their own. There is a strong bond and comradery among us AAs in corrections work. Come out and find meaningful service as part of the Corrections Committee. We meet the last Tuesday of every month at 7 pm at Intergroup. Sincerely, Sandy D. (chair) & Evan C. (co-chair) Treatment Facilities Committee Committee members carry 30 meetings each week into various treatment and detox facilities in the local area. Several homegroups organize volunteer coverage of certain meetings supported by the committee. There are lots of opportunities for service, and we encourage rotation of volunteers among the meetings. If you have a homegroup, a sponsor, and one year of continuous sobriety, join us for a committee meeting the 2nd Saturday of each month at the Intergroup office. We meet at 9:30 am. Our monthly meeting is more than just an orientation for new volunteers. It is how, as a committee, we fellowship and share our own service work experiences. Together in Service, Fyniss N., chair

Steve T., chair Nominating Committee Peaceful Greetings from the Nominating Committee: For many of us AAs, gratitude for our sobriety is service work. There is a myriad of ways to perform service work. Some may want to take meetings into detox, corrections facilities, treatment centers, or fill other spots on various service committees, while others enjoy making coffee at our home group, speak at open speaker meetings, serve as GSR or Intergroup delegate, etc. All service opportunities are equally important and greatly needed. The spirit of rotation is alive and well at your Metrolina Intergroup office, and we want you to be a part of that rotation. While the Nominating Committee s work does not get into full swing until each November, we urge you all to consider putting your hat in the ring to serve as co-chair for one of the service committees. Each year we recruit nominees and elect a co-chair for the steering committee, treasurer, secretary, Corrections, Treatment, Unity, CPC/PI and Nominating. If you are already active in service work, please encourage your sponsees and to get in the middle of the herd as well. Those on the rim are too likely to get picked off! So, come November 2018 we are looking to have a full slate of candidates ready, willing, and able to give back that which has so freely been given. Thanks to your donations, we have been able to lower prices. We have several new groups meeting at the office and the availability for more. One of the best things about our new location is the foot traffic it has brought in. We have many students and others that are coming by on a regular basis. When I was hired here five years ago, I stated my goal to make Metrolina Intergroup a safe haven where all are welcome. So, if you haven t had the opportunity to visit, please take the time.
