1 NEW PROSPECTUS The new prospectus for is now available on the web site. You can also pick up a hard copy in the office. You will see that there are some changes on the prospectus offered this year. The North West Regional College, who provide a number of our tutors, have increased their prices three fold! This has been a regional decision and is affecting all the colleges across the North. Despite numerous meetings between ourselves and the College they would not yield or give us any concessions on the fees. This means unfortunately the prices have increased for those courses with a College Tutor. They also have switched the courses to blocks of 8 weeks so members will have to reenrol after Christmas and Easter. There has not been any increase in Membership fees for U3A Foyle with the fee remaining at 37. You can enrol for the season at any stage over the summer. The Enrolment Day for all courses and activities is Tuesday 1 st September 2015 from 10am 3pm. There are also some activities which have not been included in this Prospectus but hopefully will be confirmed before September. I hope you will be able to find something in the prospectus that you ll enjoy. NEW ACTIVITIES LATIN There will be 2 Latin Groups starting in September. Last year s groups will merge as one class (will run on Tuesdays from am - 25) and there will be a new group for Beginners (Wednesday 10-11am - 25) so if you haven t picked up a Latin book since Ecce Romani then this is the group for you. All welcome to come along. There will also be two Literature classes one is the continuation of the Poetry Class (which will run now on a Tuesday from pm - 25) and a Classical Literature Class dealing with Masterpieces of Greek Tragedy/Siege of Troy (Wednesday )

2 GARDEN PARTY TASTER SESSION Next Thursday, 23 rd July there will be the opportunity to get some great ideas and tips on Summer Party food and al fresco dining. (We are eternal optimists here hoping for a wee bit of sun at some stage of the summer!) Laurent Pirone is a French Patisserie Chef now living and working in Derry. He will be demonstrating easy recipes for family gatherings with mains such as Pulled pork pittas with beetroot & red cabbage slaw and desserts such as Mango wrapped in filo pastry and dipped in chocolate sauce or Ginger & honey cheesecake. He will share ideas on salads and marinades, salsas and dips and have printouts of his recipes. Laurent is planning to take some 4-week classes here in U3A Foyle from September so this is your chance to get a flavour of what he does. This taster session costs 5 and everyone is welcome. Thursday 23 rd July from pm. Please sign up and pay in the office. HILL WALKING GROUP The next outing for the Hill Walking Group will take place on Monday, 20 th July they will be doing part of the Dunfanaghy to Horn Head walk. About 7 or 8 miles, rough grass, sandhills, beach, open hillside with a few fences and stiles. All the Animators and organisers for groups, classes and courses are invited as well as all our regular volunteers - the ladies in the kitchen, our office volunteers and the handymen volunteers, our fundraising teams, committee members and everyone who helps out throughout the year. 3 QUESTIONNAIRE Further to the Physical Activity Research PhD project which Phillip Gray successfully ran last year with Mervyn Kirkwood and Derry City Council (which in the process of getting published), Phillip has asked if we could distribute the following link to an online survey. This is the last study within Phillip s thesis, and it has real potential to be a pioneering study within the area of physical activity promotion and older adults. He needs to reach 400 responses which is a really daunting number so I am asking as many of you as possible to click and complete the survey please. The survey will take 10 minutes to complete. The questionnaire assesses physical activity compensation among older adults. When older adults incorporate new exercise into their routine, they often become less active outside of the exercise class e.g. reducing walking, housework or gardening. This is known as physical activity compensation and may subtract from any health benefits associated with incorporating the new exercise into their routine. This study will attempt to develop a questionnaire which will try to measure the likelihood of an older adult compensating in their physical activity levels.
