2 Short History First ever National Aboriginal Day celebration on June 21, 2014 Approx 1000 people in attendance First Nation participants representing 11 different first nations communities Community Participation Community Partnerships Tourism participants first time in Orangeville

6 Fundraisers On May 3, 2014 we held our fundraising dinner Soup, buffalo, venison, moose, salads, vegetables and dessert Craft Sales Bottle Drive

7 Youth Chefs 2014 Dinner Fundraiser Youth from the High Skills Major Culinary program cook our traditional feast. The meal was so well received but the surprise of our youth cooking was worth the wait.

8 Kim Presents Tobacco Plants Part of First Nations tradition is to give a tobacco offering when asking to learn something or to give in prayer. At the end of any social gathering there is a giveaway. Here you see Kim presenting tobacco plants as gifts for the giveaway as a thank you for all who had come to join in our First fundraiser for Aboriginal Day.

15 Creating Our Circle After the success of a great event we moved on to form the Dufferin County Cultural Resource Circle we have had many volunteers commit to moving forward bringing our FNMI traditional teachings, and ceremonies to Orangeville The interim board of Directors: Chairman: Debora Sipkema, Vice Chair: Gilbert Sipkema, Treasurers: Monica Vida and Cathy Elliott, Bookkeeper: Laura Spring, and Secretary: Lynda Houseman Formed our Youth Council as well

16 Creating Our Circle As a group we decided to partner with other organizations such as the Ontario Native Women s Association, DareArts, Town of Orangeville, Orangeville Police Services and Community Blooms. Doing this has allowed us to bridge the gap between the mainstream culture and the FNMI culture for local community

17 Honouring Youth Pow Wow 2015 Plans for a 3 day event this year - June 19-21, 2015 with an opening concert and karaoke followed by a two day Pow Wow with camping benefit Dufferin County as a whole but Orangeville specifically on the economical, social, health, artistic, kinship and cultural aspects. This centre would showcase the traditions of not just FNMI but also all the other cultures that make Orangeville great. Engage youth, at risk/high risk/ those without access to cultural needs

22 Lead Dancers Kim Newby and Kyle LaForme have been selected as lead dancers for their demonstration of leadership and dedication to First Nations culture. Here they introduce their culture and traditions to Orangeville by speaking about the medicines and teaching about their regalia. Kim Newby along with her brother Jason grew up in Orangeville.
