Be Creative With Creative Spirits!! A prior holiday gathering where we painted, sipped, and dined was such a hit, we ve decided to do it again! On December 1, we ll be at The Tavern (on 50 th in WDM) and have more room to paint, stroll, and enjoy everyone s work of art. We ll also enjoy The Tavern s worldrenowned pizza and finger food! Be sure to RSVP right away to get your spot reserved for this fun, fun evening. It s the best way to kick off the holidays with friends and smiles. 2 President s Letter Hi, All, This weekend we will roll our clocks back 1 hour for daylight savings. That means winter is right around the corner. As our days get shorter, I hope you can get all your outdoor activities done before our first snowfall. I also hope you all had a chance to enjoy this beautiful fall weather we have been having. Here are samples of the artwork we ll do at our Holiday Social. You can change the colors all you want!! For all you Cubs fans out there, our day has finally come. After 108 years of waiting for a championship title, we are able to celebrate the winning of the World Series. I was fortunate enough to be able to attend game 4 at Wrigley Field last weekend. Wow, was Chicago crazy and fun. Hey, Chicago, what do you say?? Go, Cubs, Go!! Please join us on Thursday December 1 st at The Tavern on 50 th Street in West Des Moines for our December social. We are doing another sip and paint with one of our members, Meg. We did this two years ago, and it was a lot of fun. It was a little crowded two years ago, so we have moved the venue this year. We will have plenty of room as well as pizza and appetizers to enjoy while we paint. Our Charity of the Year for 2016 is Make-A-Wish (Iowa chapter). The votes were tight, and Make-A-Wish only won by 1 extra vote. The other charity in the running was Youth Emergency Shelter Services (YESS). Maybe next year we can support that great organization. Please remember to bring your checkbooks on December 1 st to donate to Make-A-Wish, if you want to. MWN will try to match the funds our members contribute as well. See you all soon!! 3 Interesting Stuff Did you know? The Tavern Story -- A Des Moines Tradition Since 1945 The Tavern was founded in Valley Junction during the Great Depression and has been in operation ever since. In 1945 it was purchased by John and Mary Rilei who operated it as a small-town tavern with pool table, a bar and a few booths and tables. In 1950, to shore up their declining bar business, John and Mary introduced the Grinder Sandwich and a legend was born. Shortly thereafter; The Taverns famous thin-crust pizza was added to the menu. The pizza was an instant success, and soon, customers began waiting in line to buy it. This prompted the addition of a kitchen and the removal of the pool table to make room for more dining and to accommodate the masses of customers who were becoming addicted to the great flavor of the pie. In 1970, John died of cancer, and Mary was faced with a decision to sell or keep The Tavern. Her many friends advised her to hang on, and that's exactly what she did - successfully operating the business until September 18, 1988, when she sold it to long-time friend, Chuck Celsi. Mary continued to live in the apartment upstairs, and with Celsi s blessing, she continued to keep watch over every phase of the operation. For years, Mary mixed the spices and supervised the making of the sauces and other products to make sure nothing changed. To this day, all of the original recipes are exactly as Mary made them. In 1995, The Tavern II, which seats 375, was opened on 50th Street in West Des Moines, and in 2004, the Tavern on the Go was commissioned. This fully equipped mobile kitchen is used as a concession trailer at many events and to prepare made-to-order Tavern specialties on location for all types of private and corporate functions. 4 More Interesting Stuff Next meeting: January 19, 2017 Our membership meeting! Mark your calendars! Woman of the Year! Guest, Dues, and Attendee Policy Guests may attend two meetings in a 12-month period at the member rate of $30. Any additional programs attended during that period will be $35. Membership annual dues ($40 by check or pay pal) cover the year of 2016 (January thru December). New members joining after January will pay a prorated amount for the rest of the year. Reservations made but not attended will be expected to pay the dinner fee. Any changes after the Monday cutoff must go through Connie Blodgett vial our address. We have business cards and fliers to put on each table during our meetings. C. Need to collect the Charity of the Year nominations and vote so we can collect donations at the December 1 meeting. D. Lois will send Kimberly s WoY photo to the DM Register to announce her award. V. New Business A. Changing By-Laws Maureen and Joyce will make some changes and discuss with the Board at the next in person steering Committee Meeting. 1. Need to re-word the rules for nominations for the Opportunity Grant. 2. Need to change nomination dates to earlier in the year for Woman of the Year to give us time to schedule them to come to our October meeting. 3. Talking about changing the free membership to speakers rule and the guest rules for membership. 4. Ongoing process and we are all taking steps to update the roles and By-Laws. B. We need to prepare for to vote in new board members in January C. Need to brainstorm how to beef up membership. January would be a great time to do a contest or challenge to all current members encouraging everyone to bring friends and promote our group. V. Old Business A. Sherri, Maureen and Joyce are making slides/powerpoint to show at the beginning of each meeting to talk about benefits of being a member of our group. VI. Next Steering meeting: January 5.
