3 BACKGROUND & NEEDS Impact Statement During the season, the C. G. Jung Society of Sarasota successfully produced the lecture and workshop series titled Art, Culture, Society & Jung. which featured five events and five speakers, all of whom are experts in Jungian psychology and related subjects. We broke the Society s attendance record in January, drawing more than 225 people for a lecture. The five speakers were Kevin Costello, Dr. Richard Tarnas, Dr. Tom Cheetham, Dr. Jerry Ruhl and Dr. Danielle Green. Topics included: exploring art and archetypes; modern society and the individuation process, archetypal powers and patterns in the arts; imagination, the arts and Jung; Slender Threads: the invisible patterns that shape our lives; and how the "unseen" realms shape our reality and serve as a gateway to personal and spiritual transformation. For the season: The Society is expanding its program to include Joseph Campbell Mythological Roundtables (MRT) through a partnership with the Joseph Campbell Foundation Mythological RoundTable Group of Sarasota. Three events will take place at the New College Jane Bancroft Cook Library. The discussions are inspired by the lifework of mythologist and comparative religion expert Joseph Campbell. MRT network groups are gatherings of people interested in all things mythological. They are designed to enrich us as individuals and offer the opportunity to introduce Joseph Campbell s work to the wider community. Through a Jungian lens, we will feature presentations followed with open sharing from participants. This program is free and open to the public. We also have expanded our class program to offer ongoing events with local Jungian practitioners. For example, in the summer of 2017 we featured an intensive on transpersonal experiences with Dr. Danielle Green and in January 2018 we are offering a new six-session astrology class with local astrologer and former Society board president Sandy Ochin. Needs Statement 1. Marketing budget for annual lecture and workshop series ($5,000 per year). 2.Additional funding for speaker fees and related travel costs ($15,000 per year). 3. Additional funding for staff (executive director's position, accounting and speaker programming assistance/coordination) ($20,000 per year). 4. Partners/organizations willing offer complimentary venue space for C. G. Jung Society lectures and workshops. 5.Additional funding for annual membership drive ($5,000 per year). Background Statement The C. G. Jung Society of Sarasota is a not-for-profit educational group formed in 1994 for the purpose of studying the psychology of Carl Gustav (C. G.) Jung. It is open to all persons with an interest in Jung. All programs and activities of the Society are offered for educational purposes only and do not constitute personal therapy for any participant. C. G. Jung, one of the most influential thinkers of our time, profoundly influenced all aspects of our modern culture, including medicine, religion, philosophy, literature and art. In the field of psychoanalysis, Jung developed his own system of analytical psychology. Through his pioneering theories of personality and the unconscious, Jung is responsible for many terms we now consider common: the archetype and the collective 3

4 unconscious, introvert and extravert, anima and animus, synchronicity and individuation, even New Age spirituality. Over the years, Jung s ideas about dream interpretation, the integration of the psyche as the goal of personal development, and the common roots of all human mythologies have achieved world recognition. Statement from the Board Chair The C. G. Jung Society of Sarasota is comprised of volunteers who are passionately seeking answers to life s most challenging questions. We give our time and our enthusiasm, and in return we are richly rewarded with self-knowledge and a better understanding of our fellow man, our parents and our children. C. G. Jung finds such devotion due to his teaching methods (archetypes, shadow work, synchronicity, etc.). Therefore, the members of the C. G. Jung Society are very loyal and generously give of their time and money. Our challenge is to keep attracting quality speakers to our lectures and workshops, which is essential to help us grow and stay solvent. Statement from the CEO/Executive Director In today s challenging times, we are looking inward and self-reflecting to better understand our true nature, and how it evolves through the structures of society, spirituality/religion and humankind. The exceptional body of work produced by Swiss psychologist Carl Gustav (C. G.) Jung helps us to explore, in a multidimensional fashion, the four levels of human existence (physical, emotional, mental and spiritual) and how we, as human beings, integrate the seen and the unseen influences that form and inform a human being. 5 PROGRAMS C. G. Jung Society of Sarasota Lecture and Workshop Series Description This seasonal lecture and workshop series runs from vember through April with local and national presenters who are experts in Jungian psychology and related subjects. Speakers present a Friday night lecture and full-day Saturday workshop on a given weekend, drawing both members and nonmembers to explore empowering topics that will expand their personal development efforts and understanding of the works of C. G. Jung and others who have followed in his path. The workshops also offer attendees an opportunity to engage and interact with other participants and the presenters in meaningful discussions, exercises and interactive presentations. Budget $15, Category Program Linked to Organizational Strategy Population Served Short Term Success Long Term Success Program Success Monitoring Program Success Examples Arts, Culture & Humanities, General/Other Arts, Culture & Humanities, General/Other Adults General/Unspecified By participating in any or all of the lectures and workshops, attendees learn the principles of Jungian psychology and how they can be used for self-help, helping others and/or better understanding our world cultures and how human consciousness is evolving. This program offers significant long-term learning opportunities for those interested in Jungian psychology. It also helps to build relationships among likeminded people. Participants learn about C. G. Jung's theories/psychology and how to apply them to their own lives and the lives of others. This program offers benefits for those who are professional therapists, analysts and psychologists, as well as individuals who are interested in self-reflection, spiritual growth, self-awareness, and interactive learning through the in-depth workshops. Jung is the founder of analytical psychology, and one of the main topics that participants learn about through this program is individuation the lifelong psychological process of differentiation of the self out of each individual's conscious and unconscious elements. Other Jungian concepts that are introduced to provide long-term learning benefits include synchronicity, archetypal phenomena, the collective unconscious, the psychological complex, and extraversion and introversion. Program success is monitored using speaker evaluations, which are completed by participants during each event. In , more than 90 percent of participants found programs to be helpful, interesting and informative based on speaker evaluations. 5

6 Joseph Campbell Mythological Roundtable Groups Description Joseph Campbell Mythological Roundtable (MRT) Groups through a partnership with the Joseph Campbell Foundation Mythological RoundTable Group of Sarasota. Three events will take place in 2018 at the New College Jane Bancroft Cook Library. The discussions are inspired by the lifework of mythologist and comparative religion expert Joseph Campbell. Jung s and Campbell s paths and research paralleled in many ways, and Campbell frequently used references to Jung s work (for example, the unconscious and symbolism), making the overlap of Jungian perspectives a natural fit for a Joseph Campbell MRT. TThis program is free and open to the public. Roundtables will meet for 90 minutes at the New College Jane Bancroft Cook Library. Manicured discussions start with approximately 45 minutes of presentation material (could be speaker, film, audio, panel, etc.) and then discussion is open for 45 minutes. Budget $ Category Program Linked to Organizational Strategy Population Served Short Term Success Education, General/Other Adults Joseph Campbell Mythological Roundtable (MRT) Groups are discussions that are inspired by the lifework of mythologist and comparative religion expert Joseph Campbell. Long Term Success Program Success Monitoring Program Success Examples The Sarasota MRT melds both Jung s and Campbell s perspectives into presentations, making for a rich and thoughtful sharing of ideas around Campbell s work. The long-term goal is to attract more people to the C. G. Jung Society of Sarasota and its programs through the overlapping work of Jung and Campbell. Program success is monitored by evaluations, active participation and number of attendees. This is a new program and success examples will not be available until March
