For years we have struggled with adapting to the main halls sound system and we finally bit the bullet and purchased a standalone sound system that significantly improves the audio during the meeting and thereby, improves the overall quality of our meetings. A special thanks to Whit Anderson and Lee Nye who did the research and proposal into what was needed. We have a toy workshop coming up on Friday Sept 23rd. There will be a sign up sheet for the event at the August meeting. You do not have to be there all day. There will be morning and afternoon sessions. If you would like to be there all day that would be great. I hope to see you at the workshop. The August meeting is our last chance to donate to the St. James golf outing. We had a nice start on the donations at our June meeting. Bring and item that you just made or look around the shop for items that someone else would appreciate. Thanks to all of you who contribute last year and are contributing this year. It is nice to support a St. James function. By the time this news letter is out the annual auction will probably have occurred. Events like this do not occur without significant membership participation and organization. Thanks to all of you who made this event possible and a particular thanks to Jerry Johnson and Rich Rossio, who without their participation this event would not happen. August is the month that we begin to seek volunteers for the nomination committee for next year's board. Some board members have already volunteered for the committee but, it would be great to have others from the general membership participate on the committee. If you would consider being on the committee please contact me or Mike Kalscheur (membership chair). As always, all members are invited to attend the board meetings. 2 Jerry Johnson President s Communication Secretary s Report Board Meeting August 1, 2016 Ed Buhot called the meeting to order at 7:01 p.m. Present were Bert LeLoup, Mike Kalscheur, Whit Anderson, Dave Brearley, Stan Anderson, Mark Wieting, Rich Rossio, Tony Evansky, and Jerry Johnson. The June minutes were approved. The treasurer s report was approved. --Al Hrejsa passed away. He had been an active member and had won the single plank competition in The St. James golf outing will be in September and they will appreciate donations of items to be auctioned. -Rockler has requested that we identify ourselves as DPWW members when we are in the store. They like to know that club members are customers. Because of Labor Day the September board meeting will be held on September 12. Committee Reports Membership Membership has reached 166 per Mike. Prizes Tony is doing prizes now. Has items on order for August. Toys Stan announced the date for the next toy workshop is September 23 at Woodcraft. The date is a Friday as no Saturday dates were available. Al Rieman has picked up cutoffs from Owl and done glue ups for toy making. Rich and Bert are going to visit different woodworking companies to see if we can get cutoffs for use in the toy making. Walmart provided a $25 gift certificate that will be used to purchase crayons for the toy program. Programs Rich has Bruce Kinney lined up for shop visit this month. A representative from the Morton Arboretum will speak at the August meeting and a program on sharpening will be provided in September. Rich will develop a short program for the November meeting to precede the toys presentation. Old Business -The new audio system was used for the June meeting and met with nearly universal approval. The general consensus was that it is the best sound we have ever had in our current meeting space. Dave made a good carrying case for it that provides excellent protection for the fragile gear. Whit and Lee did a thorough job of investigating different options for solving our audio quality problems and came up with an outstanding solution. -The short video project is making progress: some of the member speakers have been identified and a story board is well along -Auction planning is proceeding as normal although we are a little short on volunteers. Jerry will provide a note for Mike to send out requesting a little more help. -Lee completed the two tables for the church. St. James has asked for an additional shelf to go with the tables. Ed will ask for a volunteer to make it. New Business -A nominating committee for the 2017 slate was named: Ed Buhot, Dave Brearley, Mike Kalscheur, and Mark Wieting have agreed to serve. The meeting adjourned at 8:22 p.m. Jerry Johnson, Secretary MEMBERSHIP Stan also confirmed that this will be his last workshop and he will be unable to serve as Toy Czar next year. This will be a big loss to our keystone public service activity. Stan has been instrumental in the great success of the program which has delivered an average of well over 2000 toys annually for disadvantaged kids over the past number of years. We will need to find a new owner for the program to keep up the good work. Activities Mark showed us a nice thank you acknowledgement from Maple Street Chapel for our donation after they provided a program and tour of the old church building. 3 PROGRAM Rich Rossio Its All About The Trees Trees impact our lives in many ways. Beth Corrigan, Community Trees Program specialist from The Morton Arboretum will present how trees care for us and we need to care for them. Trees in urban settings provide us with many benefits, but are in decline. The impact of invasive pests, disease, climate change, aging, and tough urban growing conditions are decreasing our tree canopy. Communities budget for planting and tree care, but have a difficult time keeping up. Fortunately, there are many ways to help. And then, at the end of a tree's active life, we can harvest the wood and continue the legacy of each tree through urban wood utilization. I planned to briefly cover the benefits of trees, then move into some data about the overall tree canopy in DuPage County. I will finish with the impact of EAB on urban forests and the opportunity that urban wood utilization presents. Stan Anderson TOYS At the August meeting we will have one inch wheels and axles available in packets for members to make toys for the 2016 toy drive. These toys are given to local charities for their distribution. We also have operation sheets and patterns for various toys. The designs are simple and are not heirloom quality for various reasons. Toys are unpainted and should not have small parts. Operation sheets and patters are also available. We also encourage members to design their own toys for this toy program. A toy workshop will also be held at Woodcraft on Friday Sept. 23, Signup sheets available at the August Meeting Keep those chips flying Just a word from yours News Editor. I stopped at Owls to purchase some lumber for a home project. I asked them about getting some cut offs for our TOY PRO- GRAM and they came thru. They called me the next day, advising me that they saved 2 containers of wood for me to pick up. John Mele and I will start gluing the scraps together for making toys. These will be ready for our toy program in Sept. Stan Borrow Some Tools Coffee Makers (630) Gotta have coffee at the meetings! Just arrive a little after 6:00 and join the fun with others preparing coffee, cookies, and cleanup after Don t forget that one benefit of being a member of the DuPage Woodworkers is that we have some tools that you can borrow. Our members consist of all skill levels; from beginners to professionals. Meetings and field trips provide an opportunity to gain and share knowledge about woodworking. Our regular meetings are once a month for about 2 1/2 hours. Meetings (usually the fourth Wednesday of the month) consist of some announcements about activities, a short discussion of any woodworking problems that members want to ask about, a drawing for woodworking prizes, and a presentation on some aspect of woodworking. If you are interested in joining the DuPage Woodworkers, you are invited to attend a meeting. If you become a member, dues are twenty-five dollars per year. Membership entitles you to attend meetings, to go on field trips (shop visits, woodworking businesses, etc.), and a discount at several local woodworking supply companies.
