This foundation supports dynamic programs for people with mental and/or physical disabilities. For over 40 years our lodge has hosted this event known as Tidewater. The Lodge and community volunteers treated the participants to an outdoor picnic, music and dancing, entertainment, and demonstrations by local civic groups. The day was capped by a dinner, talent show, and more music and dancing. This is our premier charity event of the year, and before the group departs we donate all the money we have raised throughout the year. This year the Lodge, Chapter, and other numerous groups donated over $8, to help supplement the Foundation s recreational budget. To host an event of this magnitude requires many volunteers and it is heartwarming to provide a wonderful day for these deserving people and see the familiar happy faces and bring a smile to the new ones each year. 2 Page 2 Franconia Moose Family Center News Nov-Dec 2018 Governor s Message As we finish the first 6 months of the present Moose year, I would like everyone to reflect back on the busy times at the lodge thus far. We planned 61 events during this time period which included steak nights, seafood nights, breakfast and Tidewater to name a few. The only way that this can happen and be successful is by having a good solid core of volunteers. I do not expect the fall and winter months to slow down so we are looking for more members to step up to the plate and volunteer some time. We need to increase our volunteer base. Please contact myself or Events Coordinator Ray Giroux to see how you can sign up to volunteer. We must promote a positive attitude, share our successes and learn from our experiences. There should never be a divide as we should always work as a team. We have had a great six months and I would like to thank all of you for being part of our continuing growth. I look forward to working with you through the rest of the Moose year. Administrator s Corner The week of 4 10 November is designated as Member Retention Week. The single largest problem facing every Lodge is shrinking membership rolls and Moose International still requires every lodge to be at a minimum of +1 at the end of the Moose year to qualify for any Lodge awards. I am asking all our members to make a concerted effort from now through April 30 th, 2019 to recruit new members, and more importantly to do whatever it takes to ensure that existing members renew their membership. As we approach the holiday season I hope that everyone will adopt an attitude of fellowship. Put that idea in your head each and every time you come to the Lodge. We will have our annual Thanksgiving dinner, member Christmas party, and New Year s Dinner/Dance to look to in the future. As always I hope that you can enjoy some or all of these events. Make time in your personal schedule to spend some time at the Lodge and socialize with your friends and fellow members. Fraternally, Larry Gibeault Governor Fraternally, Ben Kern Administrator Please note the new Social Quarters hours for Monday 3:00 PM to 12 Midnight. 3 Page 3 Franconia Moose Family Center News Nov-Dec 2018 Hello Co-Workers, Senior Regent Message Welcome to the Fall of 2018! I would like to start by thanking all the co-workers who came out and helped during this year s Tidewater Event. A special thanks to Joyce Hoskins our Higher Degrees Chairman, for organizing the consignment donation box as well as everyone who donated to it and brought goodies to the bake sales which helped the WOTM raise funds to donate $500 to this wonderful organization at the Sarah Bonwell Hudgins Foundation. It was an amazing day! The children s Halloween party was a fun time. Thanks to Sue Brennan for heading it up and everyone who helped out to make it a great day for our Moose kids especially those who generously donated candy for trick-or-treating. Our Christmas in October Walk was a great success and with our help, both our children at Mooseheart and seniors at Moosehaven can look forward to a happy and fun holiday season. Don t forget about the ongoing Mooseheart Endowment Fund cradle fundraiser you just make a small donation in the jar at the bar and write your name on a cradle to be posted in the Lodge. Mooseheart and Moosehaven are counting on our support! Our Chapter meeting on November 7 th at 7:30 is the College of Regents night and I would like to invite everyone to attend - all Past Regents, wear your regalia. We will be celebrating Estelle Miller who received her College of Regents Degree at the International Conference in New Orleans in July. Membership Retention Week is November 4 th - 10 th. Some highlights include: kid s movie night in the hall during steak night on Friday, November 9 th ; membership drive Italian dinner on Saturday, November 10 th ; and Sunday Fun Day family paint afternoon on November 11 th. Bring the family for the LOOM breakfast and stay for a fun afternoon of painting. (Senior Regent Message Continued) Also in November, the Moose Marketplace is being held on Saturday, November 17 th, so come do some early holiday shopping and return on Sunday, November 18 th for our delicious annual Thanksgiving dinner. Don t forget our annual food drive for those in need during the holidays. The donation box is by the DJ booth. Let us know if you know of someone who needs a little help this holiday season and would benefit from receiving a food gift box. December 15 th is the children s Christmas party and I heard Santa will be there! Please sign up by Dec. 9 th so Santa will have enough goodies for everyone. The Lodge adult holiday party is the same afternoon, so come join us for some Christmas cheer. The WOTM Annual Kris Kringle party will be on Wednesday, December 19 th after a brief meeting. Please bring a wrapped gift for the White Elephant gift exchange and a snack to share. Remember our theme this year is Moose on a Mission. Spread the word that the Moose is a great place to meet people, get involved in community service and also provide a safe home for children in need and senior members. Invite your friends and family to one of the above events and have some fun. Better yet, come to our meetings the 1 st and 3 rd Wednesdays at 7:30 to hear about the WOTM and the causes we support, such as Safe Surfin - the VMA is the number one supporter of this cause that works to keep internet predators away from our children. There s lots happening around the Lodge in the upcoming months, so be sure to check your s, the Lodge website and our Facebook page WOTM 1042 for more information on these and other events. Best wishes for a safe and Happy Thanksgiving and Holiday season! Kathy Sutton Senior Regent If you want to be informed on the latest happenings of the WOTM, please see our Facebook Franconia WOTM It s time again to support cradle fundraiser for the endowment fund in support of Mooseheart and Moosehaven during the month of November. Each member can participate in this program by obtaining a cradle tag (hopefully more than one) and displaying it with your name in our Social Quarters. A minimum donation of $1.00 is suggested for each tag but a more generous donation is gladly accepted. Page 3 of 20 Downloaded from Posted: 11/8/2018

Moose Legion Committee Greetings fellow Moose Legion members, The bus hop this past October 20th, was very successful and all who attended appeared to have a great time. Thank you to all who pitched in to help and those who attended. We will visit the possibility of doing another bus hop this coming spring. The Moose Legion Committee is still planning to hold a bonfire at the lodge on November 16th, weather permitting and provided there will be no issues with the county fire marshal. The bonfire will be open to all lodge members with hamburgers and hotdogs being served. The price per member for the meal will be determined and will be announced at a later date. We are looking for Lodge and Moose Legion members to bring a side dish and deserts to compliment the hamburgers and hotdogs. We continue to grow the Moose Legion and are always looking for new members to grow our ranks. As always I look forward to your ideas for different events to hold and ways to increase attendance at our meetings.. Mike Lopez Moose Legion Chairman. Page 5 of 20 Downloaded from Posted: 11/8/2018

If your dues are current...great. If not, or they are about to expire, would you please take a moment to send in your payment! Remember, the majority of your dues go to help our children at Mooseheart and our seniors at Moosehaven. Member Retention week is November 4th-10th. Let's have a great week Together!! SPORTS COMMITTEE Most of our sports are moving indoors as the weather chills down. Watch your favorite Football Team on Sundays, Mondays, and Thursday in the Lodge (six TVs, six different games). Our Stanley Cup Champions the Washington Capitals are on the ice and on our TVs in the social quarters. Basketball season is also started while NASCAR is winding down. The Monday Night BCA Pool league is in need of additional teams. In January the 2019 Spring Session will start and we have room for 2 more teams. If you have an interest in playing pool or have a team that would like to join our group on Monday nights, see me or me and I will give you more information. If you play darts, and are interested in friendly competition, please let me know. I would like to get a luck of the draw night going but we need participants. If you would like to play, please me and we will put a night of fun together. Also the 4 th district is trying to put a Moose night with the Capitals together for some time in February. Watch for Facebook updates and flyers around the lodge. I am looking to put together a traveling King of the Moose team to travel to lodges to compete against their Moose team in, pool, darts, corn hole, and shuffleboard. If you are interested please (see below) or stop me when I am in the lodge. Also the Karaoke is always looking for great singers during the Steak and Seafood Nights at the Lodge. We love Kevin serenading us with his great voice but fresh talent is always welcome. On the soft side of sports our resident Joyce Hoskins has Mexican Train Wreck challenges on some Sundays. It is a hoot for everyone young and old. If you are interested in participating or just want to know what it s about ask Joyce or myself when you are in the lodge. Members - this is your Lodge, if there is a sports activity you want to see started here at the Lodge let me know and I will try and make it happen. Have a happy and safe holiday and hope to see everyone around the Lodge. Skip Staggs Sports Chairman skipshouse@aol.com Tom Taylor Junior Governor Page 8 of 20 Downloaded from Posted: 11/8/2018
