Mission Statement To support people with development disabilities to know, understand and practice their rights and responsibilities as citizens, and to participate fully in their community CLM NEWSLETTER APRIL 2017 UPDATES & EVENTS Introduction Welcome to the Community Living Mattawa s Spring Newsletter. In this edition, the many activities that consumers were involved in throughout the winter are highlighted. In addition, we highlight the upcoming fundraising events that will be held throughout the spring and summer. I hope you enjoy the newsletter. 2 Consumer News Musical Jam Session On February 17, 2017, Support Worker Deanna brought a few instruments into the Bissett Residence for the residents to play. Peter, Mary and Debbie picked up the instruments and joined in on the musical jam session. Peter really enjoyed himself with the Bongo drum. Everyone had a great time. Woodworking On February 26, 2017 Support Worker Deanna assisted Larry and David to make a personal sign for their home using a wood burning technique. Larry and David picked out the wood for their sign and took turns sanding it down. Once the wood was smooth, Larry and David both signed their names in pencil to give them the outline for their names on the sign. Deanna assisted Larry and David to wood burn their names into the board. Once the wood was cool, both Larry and David varnished it to finish off their handiwork. They are both very proud of the end result and proud to display their sign at their home. Valentine s Day Celebration The Community Participation Supports Program held a Valentine s Day Celebration on Tuesday, February 14, The theme of the day was LOVE. The consumers enjoyed several games of Win, Lose or Draw and listening to music with the word LOVE in the lyrics. Everyone had fun finding and playing their personal favorite songs. Special Valentine Treats were provided, such as heart-shaped shortbread cookies. Chocolate bonbons were made by the Consumers for the event and were enjoyed during the break. Each participant received a Valentine s Day gift and there was a Valentine s Day card exchange. Everyone had a great time.

3 Consumer News (Cont d) Bowling Night On February 25, 2017, a group went to Big Ern s for a night of bowling. The group had snacks, pizza and refreshments. Everyone had a great time. Capitol Centre Queen Outing On March 11, 2017, a group went to the Capitol Centre in North Bay for a concert by Simply Queen (a Queen Tribute band). Prior to the concert the group went to Pizza Hut for salads, pizza, pasta, garlic bread, and refreshments. After dinner it was time for the show. The group was singing and cheering throughout the concert. After the outstanding performance, the group had a chance to meet the band and have their pictures taken with band members. Joelle, Brett, Karina, Peter, Debbie, Matthew, Celine, Mary, David, Dawn, Monique, Caitlyn and Jen all had a great time. A special thank you goes out to Pierrette Burke for donating some of the tickets for the show.

4 Consumer News (Cont d) St. Patrick s Day Celebration The Community Participation Supports Program held a St. Patty s Day Celebration on Friday, March 17, Participants learned about the origin and history of St. Patrick s Day, listened to some Irish music, and played a few games. Bingo was the highlight of the day. During break, the group enjoyed a wonderful green punch and green cupcakes. Maple Syrup Outing On March 25, 2017, Support Worker Deanna took Brett, David, Debbie, Larry and Peter to her parents home in Papineau Cameron Township where they had an opportunity to walk along one of the maple tree trails and collect and taste the maple sap coming from the trees. The group also watched the sap boil and sat by the campfire roasting marshmallows. At the end of the day, everyone received a maple syrup snow cone and a jar of homemade maple syrup. Everyone had an amazing time and enjoyed the experience of making maple syrup.

5 Consumer News cont d Maintenance Helper Community Living Mattawa s Maintenance worker had some help during the month of April. Doug was working on putting together a new garbage bin for the Valois property. Larry decided to help Doug with his project. Doug and Larry worked together constructing the bin. This was a great experience for both Doug and Larry to work together and they both had a great time. Dart League Banquet This winter a group of 7 Consumers participated in a Dart League at the Mattawa Legion. The league ran on Thursday afternoons and consisted of 12 teams. The Consumers played on different teams throughout the league. The Dart League was an introduction to darts and was a way to generate interest in playing in the evening dart leagues. On April 22, 2017, the Dart League held a pot luck party to celebrate the end of the winter session. Danny, Scott, Peter, Cyndi, Brett, Mike and Ron made some treats to share at the party. Everyone enjoyed the meal and had a great time.

6 Consumer News cont d Birthdays Community Living Mattawa celebrated a two birthdays throughout the early spring. Debbie celebrated her birthday on March 22, David celebrated his birthday on April 19, 2017 with his friends. Consumer Passing Away It is with sadness that we recognize the passing of a long-time consumer. Matthew Gallagher passed away on April 25, 2017 peacefully in the hospital. Community Living Mattawa, as a whole, wishes to extend their condolences to the family and to everyone who knew Matthew.

7 Employee News New Employees Community Living Mattawa welcomes three (3) new employees to the team. Pascalle Dupras joined Community Living Mattawa on February 21, 2017 as a Support Worker 1. Pascalle will be working in Supported Independent Living and Community Participation Supports programs on a casual basis. She completed her Social Service Worker diploma at Cambrian College and is excited to be working with our Organization. Pascalle is originally from Mattawa and just recently returned to raise her family. Cassandra Pugh joined Community Living Mattawa on April 12, 2017 as a Support Worker 1 on a casual basis. Cassandra will be working in the Group Living program at the Bissett Residence. Josée Sarrazin is joining Community Living Mattawa as a Flexible Part-time Support Worker 1 beginning April 12, Josée recently completed her placement for her Social Service Worker diploma in the Community Participation Supports program and was able to get to know the consumers of the agency. Josée will be working in the Group Living program at the Bissett Residence. CLM welcomes these ladies to our team with their varied experience and educational backgrounds.

8 Community Participation Supports (CPS) Program Update The Community Participation Supports Program continues to evolve and change in an effort to meet the Ministry s direction to provide more individualized supports and services. As a result some changes are being introduced into the Program. The first is that the Program will be occasionally offering a variety of special activities, events and workshops on weekends. One of the CPS Case Managers will facilitate these activities. Pre-registration will be required for these events. The second change is to the service delivery structure. The current model of service delivery is Monday to Friday from 9:00 am 3:15 pm. The future model will be more individualized with consumers only attending the program when there is a specific workshop or activity that coincides with interests or goals identified in their person-centred plan. This means that not all consumers will be attending five days per week. There will still be some spaces for consumers to attend five days per week, but attendance for these spaces will be determined through the completion of an assessment determining their Level of Support. Consumers requiring higher levels of personal care and support would be eligible for the five-day per week program. The beginning of this service delivery structure is scheduled for fall The final change is the increase in individualized funding known as the Passport Program. Passport funds are Ministry funds that are sent directly to the consumer or their family. These funds are designed to assist a person with accessing their community and increasing their community participation, and for providing respite to families. This method of funding is the primary means in which consumers are being funded today. Community Living Mattawa has established a Passport Program that provides Community Participation Supports to consumers who have their own funding to pay for it, as well as providing direct assistance to manage all that is required concerning Passport. There will be further updates coming about the various changes.
