TARAtehachapiamateurradio Visit our Website! tehachapiareahams.yolasite.com The Official Newsletter of the Tehachapi Amateur Radio Association Volume 2, Number 5 The Great California Shake Out I covered this event last year. Just like Field Day, The Great California Shake Out is an annual event. This year it will take place on October 18 th at 10:18am. I know we all try to prepare for disasters in our area. They could come in the way of a fire, floods and earthquakes. Tehachapi has been part of them all. Are we ready? I ve always been told to practice, drill and rehearse. Practice until it becomes muscle memory. Recently I heard a quote from Kenneth van Barthold who said that AN amateur practices until he gets it right; a professional practices until he can t get it wrong. The Great California Shake Out is an opportunity to practice until we can t get it wrong. Millions of people participate in this event every year, which started in California in This event is for everyone including individuals, groups and businesses. Does the company you work for participate? If they do that AWESOME. If they don t then mention it to your supervisor or even the HR Department. They have two months to research, plan and then implement their program based on suggestions or ideas from the website. You can find more information on their website at: and get prepared. As of this writing, not one volunteer radio group from the South Central Valley of California as committed to participate. Maybe, just maybe, this might be a good excuse for our club to sign up and have members participate in a drill from wherever they are dispersed throughout the county. I will certainly bring this up as an activity during our next club meeting. Until then, take a look at what Kern County has available for you on their website: Mail: Tehachapi Amateur Radio Association (TARA) P.O. Box 1681 Tehachapi, CA Get Out the Vote! No, I m not talking about the November elections. You won t be hearing from me on robo-calls or in the news. Only in this news letter and may be at the next meeting or two. Yes, it s time to start thinking about our club officers for 2019 & Our officers serve for a two year term and we vote for them during our December Club Christmas Party. So you ask, If we don t vote until December why do I have to worry about it now? We need your nominations! If you have somebody in mind that you think will do a good job then nominate that person during the next meeting. Nominations will be on the agenda at every meeting between now and November. If you re interested in a particular position then nominate yourself.
