1 RCRC Lunch Meeting 29 th Jan 2008 Pres Johnson Tan chaired our lunch meeting which had a rather lower than usual turnout possibly because of the rainy weather. Special mention was made on Rtn Lim Hua Min who turned up dutifully for his desk duty. International Service Committee Dir Billy Lee in a much happier mood than compared to last week reported good support from members to annual golf competition with RC KL DiRaja, installation event for RC Taipeh NE in Fukuoka Japan & club fellowship trip to Kunming China. Highlight of lunch meeting was a presentation by another Rotary Scholar sponsored by RC Marina City, Sarah Brown from UK. She is currently on attachment with National University of Singapore in Political Studies. She interestingly chose to speak on the topic of Happiness with particular reference to its correlation with individual country s economic status. She started with the well-known Maslow hierarchy of needs in human beings; the happiest people being those who have reached the highest rung of Self Actualisation. The University of Leicester has published a Map of World Happiness gathering data from numerous sources like WHO, CIA, New Economics Foundation, etc. Not surprisingly people living in better performing economy countries enjoying better health care & education fared better in this happiness scale. Denmark & Switzerland came in 1 st place & 2 nd place respectively with Burundi in 178 th place. Our Singapore was listed a credible 53 rd behind developed countries like USA (23 rd ), UK (41 st ) but ahead of Japan (90 th ). Also from this Happiness Map, Singapore was listed with life expectancy of 77.6 years with Happy Life Years expectancy of 52.9 years. Sarah then continued with a further Happy Planet Index, where the amount of effort required to achieve the former happiness scale was taken into consideration. Here Vanuatu & Columbia came in 1 st & 2 nd place respectively with Zimbabwe in 178 th place. Singapore too tumbled to 131 st place behind Japan (95 th ), UK (108 th ) but ahead of USA (150 th ). Overall the presentation was an upbeat one on global happiness. Statistics of lunch meeting included 21 Rotarians, 1 Visiting Rotarian & our guest speaker. 4 Club Announcements RCRC Chinese New Year celebration Date Fri 15 Feb 2008 Time 7.00pm Venue Residence of Pres Johnson Tan Kindly RSVP attendance & numbers to Club Service Dir Alfred Ong / Pres Johnson Tan Chinese New Year Rotaract celebration The Rotaract Club of Raffles City will be organizing a Chinese New Year lunch for the clients of the Thong Kheng Senior Citizens center at Bukit Merah on 23 February from 11 AM to about 3 PM. This will involve organizing activities and hosting the residents to a vegetarian lunch. There are about clients that use the facilities. Please contact Dir Brian Tan. District Assembly / Pres Elect Training Will be held in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah from April PETS will be on April (President-Elects attendance is compulsory) and the District Assembly will be on April RCRC Community Projects 4 projects have been outlined by Community Service Committee: Man Fut Tong Home for the Elderly, Short Wave Diathermy machine- Physiotherapy ( $15500 ) Rotary Family Service Centre for project Meals from the Heart ( $5000 ) Dyslexia Assoc of Singapore Bursary project from RCRC ( $10000 ) Thailand School Building project ( $30000 ); PP Vincent Chen & Dir Billy Lee have each pledged $5000 towards this school project The club had raised required funds through a Film Premiere of "The Golden Compass" on Friday 7th December at Lido 1 and a Golf Tournament to be announced later.
