Thought of the Day Ed Niu quoted the Thought of the Day Raffle 1st Draw - Robbin Beebe. 2nd Draw -Steve Hollister. **************** Guests Judy Vared, PR Director AgeSong Hospital Report Bob Duey has acquired a new right knee. He is in SL Hospital and reportedly feeling no pain. A full recovery is expected. Dr. Nader Shabahangi, Ph.D.(above) spoke to the subject of aging gracefully. A graduate of Stanford he emphasized the need for everyone to change their mind set regarding aging. Not only must it be embraced but we should be grateful that we have another day to mature! In past societies the elders have been the ones to pass on knowledge to future generations. They have been treasured and honored. The Rotarians in the audience were not entirely sure that this is the case today. Dr. Nader also said that having a purpose and meaning to ones life is vital in maintaining a healthy outlook on life. Exchange Student Ivan Cornelius filled in the members with the current situation of our exchange student, Myisha Sexton. She is learning to enjoy one day at a time and has moved to another new family since her last letter. She knows that several things need to be addressed when she gets home. However, for now she is just eagerly anticipating a 2 week trip to Dublin, Ireland. RYLA Selection Ivan Cornelius said that 2 boys & 2 girls were selected from a pool of 13 applicants. He said that they will be making an appearance at a future meeting. Japan Relief Fund Checks are still being accepted. Make them payable to San Leandro Rotary Foundation and mail to Ray Arenott.! 5 March 29, 2011 Dear Fellow Rotarians: We are pleased to inform you that our club has completed a community needs assessment under the leadership of our Rotarians Jim Vlantis and Steve Hollister. After reviewing many worthwhile projects in San Leandro, the Board has decided to assist a project from Stepping Stones an organization that provides job placement and services for persons with developmental disabilities, and a project from Building Futures for Women and Children (BFWC), an organization that shelters women and children who are homeless or survivors of domestic violence. Please see below for a brief description of these projects: 1. Stepping Stones Project: Vic Entrikin, the Executive Director of Stepping Stones, will be speaking at our Rotary lunch on Wednesday April 27 regarding the work of Stepping Stones in the community. Stepping Stones April 30. The date of t. Our club will be one of the sponsors. Rotarian either as walkers, runners or volunteers of the event. Ivan Cornelius will be encouraging Interactors to participate in this event either as runners or walkers. Our new Rotary Club logo with the red cherries will be prominently displayed on banners and T- Shirts. The event will take place at the San Leandro Marina. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. and the race/walk begins at 8:30 a.m. and ends around 10:30 a.m. Participation as a runner or walker is $30 and participants will receive T-Shirts, goodie bags and a chance to win prizes. Awards will also be given to the top three participants for each division male or female. Please go to steppingstonesgrowth.org to register and to get other details. Businesses can also sponsor the event and have their company logo printed on banners or T-Shirts. Please contact Skiles Hornig skilesk@gmail.com for more information. This is a great event for families and people of all ages some even bring their dogs to participate in the walk. Last year there were over 250 participants. This year we are hoping for more.

6 If you do not care to walk or run please Jim Vlantis by April 8 if you would like to volunteer for the event. Currently, the jobs listed below are available for Rotarians. Please note the time commitment. Volunteers are to meet at the registration area. I only need one Rotarian for each job since Stepping Stones staff will be helping as well. What is most needed are people to go to steppingstonesgrowth.org and register for the run/walk. 1. Set up signs, banners, manage finish line a.m. 2. Set-up course signage 6-8 a.m. 3. Food set-up management 7-11a.m., 4. Registration Table. 6:30-9:30 a.m. 5. On course water station 7-11 a..m. 6. Parking assistance 7-10 a.m. 2. Building Futures for Women and Children (BFWC) Project: Liz Varela, the Executive Director of BFWC and a fellow Rotarian will be sharing with us at one of our club meetings a garden improvement project that Rotary can undertake at the women s shelter behind St. Leander s church in coming weeks. In addition, Rotarians have been invited to BFWC s annual event Jazz It Up an evening of fine wine, tapas and jazz on Thursday, May 12 at 6:00 pm.
