Please drop in! No registration required. Happiness Basics is for people who are ready to take ACTION toward building long-lasting happiness in their life. In this facilitated workshop series, participants will learn about low tech, low cost happiness building skills, and then be encouraged to try them out between weekly sessions. The weekly sessions will focus on self motivation, the impact of daily choices, overcoming barriers and moving toward positive life goals. If you are mildly depressed or feel you are languishing, or even if you are already flourishing but would like to be happier, register today! Open to staff, patients/families, and community members. The practice of mindfulness is a way of learning to relate in a new way to challenges such as stress, anxiety, depression, chronic pain, illness and everyday demands. Mindfulness includes skills to help you let go of the past, worry less about the future and live in the present with more balance and peace. It will increase your resiliency and ability to concentrate, while adding clarity and stability in your life. Thursdays April 2-May 7 This series is for new mothers and babies between 8 weeks and 9 months. These fun and informative classes will help you understand your baby and your family, as well meet other moms. Registration required. Call or visit Learn practical information on how to tune in to the important pelvic floor muscles which provide support to pelvic organs and control the bladder and bowel. This 2 hour course benefits all women! Infants in arms are welcome! Registration required. Visit or call Story time will be followed by a drop-in play-time activity for parents and children up to age five. This social event will include interactive activities to support early brain development. The third Fridays of the month are hosted by the Calgary Public Library and The First 2000 Days Early Childhood Development Network. The final Fridays of the month are brought to you by the Aspen Foundation s South Calgary Family Resource Center. Join our facilitator from the Aspen Foundation to learn about a community philosophy of nurturing that operates on seven principles: feelings of attachment, empathy, nurturing oneself, discipline, expressing feelings, expectations and self-worth, and gentle touch. 3 Parent-Child Culinary Program Tuesdays April 14-May 19 5:30-7:00 pm Children and parents learning to cook together is a winning recipe! In this six week program, children are able to develop fundamental cooking skills and parents learn how to support their child in a fun, safe, environment and make delicious, healthy food to enjoy together in the class. Targeted for children aged 9+. Families can register with up to two children. Classes are taught by qualified Dietitians. 5 QUIT SMOKING QuitCore Smoking Cessation Program Various days/times starting in May A six week group program to help you quit smoking. Thursday afternoons (12:30-2:30), Monday evenings (6:00-8:00) or Saturday morning (10:00-noon) starting in May. Call QUIT (7848) to register. PREVENTION AND MANAGING YOUR HEALTH Herbal Remedies: The good, the bad and the unknown. Understanding Dementia and Strategies to Improve Brain Health May 4 Noon-1:00 pm! June 18 A growing number of Canadians are using herbal products for preventive and therapeutic purposes. In this 40 minute lunch and learn session, pharmacist Joe Tabler, from South Health Campus, Academic Family Medicine will give some examples of popular herbal products that may have adverse effects and interactions with other drugs that are not advertised on the package. He will also discuss the how doctors, pharmacists, other clinicians and patients themselves can play a role in safe use of these products. Reserve your space now. Currently, the lifetime risk of developing dementia is 1 in 4 for women and 1 in 6 for men. 6 Heart Health Education Series Find out Why Dr. Google Isn t Reliable Wednesdays 12:15-1:00 pm April 1-22 April 28 May 25 June 30 12:10-12:50 pm Join the Heart and Stroke Foundation to learn about ways to take control of your health. Attend one or all of the sessions. If you have questions, please contact Jodi Thesenvitz, Wellness Centre Manager at or Jodi.Thesenvitz@albertahealthservices.ca April 1: Comprehensive Protect Your Health In this presentation we will review the basic structure of the heart and the brain, the physiology of a heart attack and a stroke and the symptoms of each. We will discuss risk factors and resources to help you take control of your health. Following the presentation take the opportunity to get your own blood pressure checked! April 8: Get Your Blood Pressure Under Control Nine out of ten Canadians will develop high blood pressure at some point in their lives. In this short 20 minute presentation we will cover some of the most frequently asked questions and address common myths surrounding blood pressure. April 15: Coping with Stress When someone says they are stressed out, what do they mean? This presentation was created in collaboration with the Canadian Mental Health Association and includes education on types of stress, personal coping strategies and a stress test for each participant. April 22: Cardiovascular Disease in Canadian First Nations Populations It is no secret that First Nations populations face unique health challenges, and heart disease is no exception. In this presentation we will profile the various First Nations groups in Canada, the prevalence of heart disease in First Nations communities, and examine risk factors and resources unique to Aboriginal individuals. We have all had the urge to Google our symptoms. Come to this hands-on class to learn about reliable health sites that are available. 7 MANAGE YOUR HEALTH CONDITION Eating Well with Fatty Liver Disease Living Well on Prednisone: Nutrition and Side Effects April 23 June 3 5:30-8:00 pm April 14 10:00 am-noon Arthritis 101 May 19 In this session you will learn about what non-alcohol fatty liver disease is and how to manage fatty liver disease with a healthy diet. Facilitated by an AHS Registered Dietitian. Call to register. Learn about how corticosteroids (Prednisone) affect your body and how you can eat to help manage some of the side effects. This program is facilitated by a South Health Campus Neurology Clinic pharmacist and Registered Dietitian. A class for people (and their family and friends) with movement disorders such as Parkinson s, Huntington s, dystonia and essential tremor. Facilitated by an AHS social worker. Call to register.
