James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute JamesCare for Life services are for cancer survivors, including caregivers/family members and can be accessed from the time of diagnosis. Offerings focus on many dimensions of well-being, including health care, physical, emotional, spiritual and social/practical. Programs are offered free of charge. 3 CANCER SURVIVORS MONTH Cancer Survivors Month Programs The OSUCCC James will continue its long tradition of honoring cancer survivors in June, which is designated as Cancer Survivors Month. Our theme, Hope Grows Here, is represented by the black-eyed Susan, a flower that offers encouragement and hope for cancer survivors. You and your loved ones are invited to enjoy the numerous activities planned for June. Visit the Survivors Month flower gardens in each of our locations, where you will be able to plant a black-eyed Susan in honor of yourself or someone you love. Take a black-eyed Susan seed packet home to plant and watch your own hope grow. This year s Cancer Survivorship Conference will take place on June 17 at the Fawcett Center and promises to be a day of inspiration, education and support from experts in cancer survivorship. Saturday, June :30 a.m. Martha Morehouse Medical Plaza Pavilion Auditorium 1050 Kenny Road Join us for the first garden harvest of the 2017 season! Attend this prerequisite orientation and then travel up Kenny Road to the Garden of Hope for an opportunity to harvest early-season produce. See page 18 for more information. Family Equine Therapy Sunday, June 4 1:30 4 p.m. Ohio State Equine Center 3658 Kays Avenue Your family will interact with horses to explore feelings brought on by a cancer diagnosis and understand how the cancer journey can affect family relationships. Session will be facilitated by licensed mental health professionals and certified equine specialists. Horseback riding is not involved. Open to cancer survivors and their children ages 6 to 18. Limited to two adults per family. Tea and Serenity Saturday, June :30 p.m. An informal presentation on tea and mindfulness will include ways you can incorporate serenity into daily life regardless of circumstances. A clinical dietitian will share the health benefits of tea including cancer-fighting properties. Career Counseling Workshops and Private Consultations Mondays, April 3 and 10, and Tuesday, April 18 6:30 8 p.m. Please register for one or more of our career counseling workshops that are led by a career management consultant. Resume Writing and Cover Letters Monday, April 3 Learn how to create an effective resume and cover letter. This class will emphasize format and content while highlighting career tips for addressing issues of disclosure, gaps in work history and transferable skills. Effective Interviewing Skills Monday, April 10 Learn what to do before, during and after an interview. Emphasis will be on career strategies, interviewing techniques and familiarity with employer expectations. Job-Search Strategies Tuesday, April 18 Learn about strategies to generate job opportunities, including networking, using social media and responding to ads. Hints will be provided on searching for potential employers who will be sensitive to the needs of cancer survivors. Private Consultations Monday, April 24 Meet with a professional career counselor for one hour to discuss personal needs related to resume writing, interviewing skills and job-search strategies. Anger about a cancer diagnosis, treatment and effects on quality of life is a normal response for survivors and caregivers. Join a psychologist from The James to learn how to recognize and cope with anger, including appropriate ways to communicate and resolve anger or irritability. Gastrointestinal (GI) Cancer Survivorship Conference Saturday, April 29 9 a.m. 3 p.m. Fawcett Center 2400 Olentangy River Road Join Timothy Pawlik, MD, PhD, MPH, and other members of The James gastrointestinal team to learn the latest information regarding research, treatment and prevention/ early detection of gastrointestinal cancers (including colon, esophageal, pancreatic, stomach, intestinal, liver, gall bladder, and rectal/anal). Patient and Family Brain Tumor Survivorship Conference Saturday, May 6 8:30 a.m. 2 p.m. Longaberger Alumni House 2200 Olentangy River Road Join us for this annual collaborative conference hosted by The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute in partnership with the American Brain Tumor Association (ABTA). This year s conference will include experts from The James presenting on the latest in brain cancer research, treatment and care. Survivors and their families will learn tips and resources to navigate living with a brain tumor diagnosis. A continental breakfast and lunch will be provided. Understanding Melanoma: From Prevention to Treatment Saturday, May 6 9 a.m. 3 p.m. OSU Eye and Ear Institute Room Olentangy River Road The Melanoma Research Foundation and The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center will present an educational event dedicated to melanoma patients and the people who support them. Leading melanoma experts will present the latest information about melanoma prevention, diagnosis and treatment. Morning refreshments and lunch will be provided. Women and Sexuality: An Information Opportunity for Cancer Wednesday, May 3 5:30 7 p.m. Stefanie Spielman Comprehensive Breast Center Join Barbara Andersen, PhD, clinical psychologist, to learn about sexuality and common difficulties arising from cancer and other natural changes throughout one s life. The session will offer firstline suggestions for difficulties such as vaginal dryness, loss of desire or related concerns with your body. Registration is encouraged but not required. 6 EXERCISE PROGRAMS Exercise Certified instructors demonstrate techniques that can be modified to all fitness levels and may be adaptable for home or community use at the completion of the series. It is recommended that participants attend each week for maximum benefit as each class session builds upon the previous one. Participants may take each series one time. Reignite your commitment to what you learned as a past participant of the Gentle Yoga Series. This class will feature a review of gentle yoga poses and modifications as well as updated information on a homebased yoga practice. Low-Impact Cardio Mondays, April 3 June 12 (no class May 29) (10-week series) 4:30 5:30 p.m. This class may help participants improve muscle and bone strength, physical function and aerobic capacity, as well as reduce fatigue and anxiety. 7 EXPRESSIVE ARTS PROGRAMS Expressive Arts Art-Based Services Art-making can be a powerful way to process feelings related to a cancer diagnosis. It can deepen insight, provide inspiration, reduce stress and improve well-being. Classes are offered under the guidance of a board-certified art therapist. Previous art experience is not required. Art programs are funded in part by the Joyce Kerze Endowment. Music-Based Services Using guided music-based strategies can help survivors manage stress, anxiety, pain, poor sleep, adjustment to lifestyle changes, family togetherness and quality of life. Programs are facilitated by a board-certified music therapist. Previous music experience is not required. Music programs are funded in part by the Margaret and Frank White MusicCare Fund. Art-Based Services Art Series: Path of the Garden Thursdays, May 25 June 22 (5-week series) 6:30-8:30 p.m. Through a variety of art exercises and modalities, you will experience the benefits of nurturing, replenishing and caring for your inner garden. Attendance at all sessions is expected. Open to cancer survivors only. Healing Through Art Thursdays, April 27, May 18 6:30 8:30 p.m. Art exercises will provide you with the opportunity to explore emotions and promote self-care within a supportive and safe environment. We will also take time to share and process our artwork as a group. Reframing Your Life Picture Through the Art of Paper-Making Friday, June p.m. and Saturday, June a.m. noon Waterman Farm Headquarters Building 2490 Carmack Road Survivors will use the art of papermaking as a transformative process to explore emotions related to their diagnosis and treatment. This class will provide an opportunity to identify difficult emotions related to a diagnosis and to transform them into a renewed sense of positivity and empowerment. 8 EXPRESSIVE ARTS PROGRAMS Music-Based Services Music Exercises and Neuropathy Management Wednesdays, May 17 June 7 (4-week series) 4 5 p.m. Stefanie Spielman Comprehensive Breast Center In this music-based series, survivors and caregivers will be introduced to therapeutic music exercises designed to reduce the physical and emotional impact of cancer treatment related to neuropathy. Attendance at all four sessions is expected. Using Music (Better!) to Support Healthy Breathing Habits Wednesday, June :30 p.m. Stefanie Spielman Comprehensive Breast Center In this music-based workshop, survivors and caregivers will be introduced to therapeutic music exercises designed to reduce the physical and emotional impact of cancer-related breathing challenges. Music Performance Groups Victory Choir Wednesdays, April 5 June 28 (no rehearsal May 31) JamesCare for Life Activity Center, Suite 2100 Stefanie Spielman Comprehensive Breast Center Learn to sing beautiful music and have the opportunity to perform in the company of other cancer survivors, including caregivers. A varied repertoire of pop, classical, folk, jazz and world music will be sung. Victory Drummers Fridays, April 7 May 26 9:30 11 a.m. BalletMet 322 Mt. Vernon Ave. The Victory Drummers group gives survivors, including caregivers, a chance to foster empowerment and a sense of community by sharing in the joy of musicmaking. The Victory Drummers explore a wide range of musical styles, genres and drumming traditions. Prior drumming skills are not required. Drums will be provided, or you are welcome to bring your own. 9 MIND, BODY, SPIRIT PROGRAMS Mind, Body, Spirit Explore meditation, guided imagery, stress-reduction techniques and the healing power of the mind. Instructors demonstrate techniques that can be adapted for home use. Series classes utilize a format in which each class builds upon the previous one. Mindfulness Workshop: Restorative Sleep Saturday, April 22 9 a.m. noon Explore useful strategies for insomnia and become mindfully aware of your inner dialogue so you can quiet the discomfort, confusion and worry that sometimes keep us awake at night. Tai Chi Beginners Mondays, April 17 June 26 (no class May 29) (10-week series) Tai Chi involves a series of flowing movements performed in a slow, focused manner and accompanied by deep breathing. A graceful form of gentle exercise and stretching, Tai Chi promotes meditation in motion. This class will combine discussions about this natural movement with opportunities to practice introductory techniques. Tea and Serenity Saturday, June :30 p.m. Savor this afternoon tea with other survivors and caregivers as you learn how to use tea time for quiet reflection and relaxation. An informal presentation on tea and mindfulness will include ways you can incorporate serenity into daily life regardless of circumstances. Tuesdays, April 11 May 16 (6-week series) 6:45 8 p.m. JamesCare for Life Activity Center, Suite 2100 Experience mindful movement, breath practices, aromatherapy, restorative postures and Reiki. This series is designed for cancer survivors to attend with their caregivers to help one another address symptoms such as pain, anxiety, nausea, insomnia and exhaustion. Walkscape Saturday, May a.m. noon Inniswood Metro Gardens 940 S. Hempstead Road Walkscape is a unique interactive experience that will introduce you to mindful walking as you connect with your surroundings. 10 NUTRITION PROGRAMS Nutrition Strong evidence shows that a diet rich in plant foods, including fruits, vegetables, beans, whole grains, nuts and seeds, helps lower risk for cancer and is important for healthy survivorship. JamesCare for Life s monthly nutrition program provides an opportunity to learn about the health benefits of these foods and how to incorporate them into your diet. Learn how to prepare healthy meals, receive new recipes and gain access to evidence-based nutritional information. Open to cancer survivors, including caregivers. Pre-registration is required. Please visit cancer.osu.edu/jcfl to register. Hands-On Cooking Monday, June p.m. The Kitchen 231 E. Livingston Ave. This class will combine hands-on cooking with nutrition education. Participants will learn various ways to prepare nutritious, plant-based foods and receive information about the health benefits and current research pertaining to these foods. This class is for new participants only. New! Keeping the Weight Off Support Group First Tuesday of the Month 6 7 p.m. Stefanie Spielman Comprehensive Breast Center New Support Group! According to the American Institute of Cancer Research, Reaching a healthy weight is the single most important thing you can do, besides not smoking, to lower your cancer risk. Unfortunately, that isn t always easy! This group will provide nutrition education and a safe, caring environment for discussing the challenges of trying to maintain a healthy weight or lose weight. This drop-in group, open to cancer survivors and caregivers, is facilitated by a clinical dietitian from The James. New! Meal-Planning Workshop Saturday, April 22 9 a.m. 1 p.m. Atwell Hall 453 W. 10th Ave. Save money, stress less and eat well by learning how to meal plan! This workshop will teach the fundamentals of plant-based meal planning along with various tips to help fit it into your life. Participants will also do hands-on prep work to learn steps they can take to make meals faster and easier. Space is limited and open to one survivor or caregiver per family unit. The mission of the garden is to introduce cancer survivors, including caregivers, to evidence-based nutritional information about the benefits of a plant-based diet. This experience will include tips on harvesting fresh garden produce properly, recipes to help make the most of your vegetables, cooking demonstrations, personal gardening classes and more. Survivors will have an opportunity to harvest up to three times each week per household. Harvest season runs from June 3 through September. Whether a caregiver or a patient, all harvesters are required to complete a classroom orientation along with the necessary paperwork prior to harvesting. Participation is limited to cancer survivors or caregivers who are new to the garden program in 2017, or who participated in 2016 for the first time. Container Vegetable Gardening Wednesday, May 17 Waterman Farm Headquarters Building 2490 Carmack Road You do not need to have a large garden to grow and enjoy fresh, nutritious vegetables. Learn how to grow your own container garden for your family. Discover which plants you may want to include and the beneficial nutrients they contain that may improve your health and reduce your cancer risk. Participants will put together a small container garden to take home. Please bring the vegetable(s) you wish to plant. One container and soilless mix will be provided. This is for first-time participants only. How to Start a Home Vegetable Garden Saturday, May 13 9 a.m. noon Waterman Farm Headquarters Building 2490 Carmack Road Learn the basic requirements for producing your own vegetables, including locating the garden, soil requirements, preparing the garden site, selecting plants and seeds, planting, maintaining the garden and much more. Also, receive information on which plants you may want to include because of their beneficial nutrients that may improve your health and reduce your cancer risk. The demonstration garden will be planted during this session and used as a learning garden throughout the growing season. Maintaining Your Home Vegetable Garden Wednesday, June 14 Waterman Farm Headquarters Building 2490 Carmack Road Join an expert at our demonstration garden at the Garden of Hope to learn how to assess for potential issues in your garden. Participants will learn how to control insects, diseases and wildlife, and how to address other problems in their home vegetable garden. You will also learn about proper garden maintenance, including pruning, plant staking, pest control and the use of pesticides or other alternatives. Make the Most Out of Your Vegetables Monday, June p.m. Waterman Farm Headquarters Building 2490 Carmack Road This cooking demonstration and educational class will teach you the best ways to cook various vegetables from the Garden of Hope to get the most nutrients possible. You will learn about cancer-fighting properties in the vegetables. Various cooking techniques that can preserve the nutrients will also be demonstrated. 12 FAMILIES, TEENS AND CHILDREN Families, Teens and Children These programs will provide a supportive and safe setting where families, teens and children can learn about cancer, talk about the challenges of a cancer diagnosis and learn effective coping skills. Parents and caregivers will receive the information, resources and support they need. Participants will interact with a human patient simulator that mimics real physiological changes. They will also perform age-appropriate experiments, including isolating their own DNA. All participants will receive wristbands to explore COSI on their own. Lunch will be served. This event is limited to two adults per family and to children ages 5 to 18. Family Equine Therapy Sunday, June 4 1:30 4 p.m. Ohio State Equine Center 3658 Kays Ave. Your family will interact with horses to explore the feelings brought on by a cancer diagnosis and to understand how the cancer journey can affect family relationships.
