LA Intergroup Chairperson s Message Tradition Six: Our Family Groups ought never endorse, finance or lend our name to any outside enterprise, lest problems of money, property and prestige divert us from our primary spiritual aim. Although a separate entity, we should always co-operate with Alcoholics Anonymous. This is actually quite brilliant. It protects my groups from outside influences and social trends so that they remain true to Tradition 5: Each Al-Anon Family Group has but one purpose: to help families of alcoholics I find it uniquely comforting and reassuring that when I walk into any Al-Anon meeting, the members are only there to help each other recover from the effects of alcoholism. I have confidence that my groups will not expend effort and resources to influence anything beyond the scope of the Program. I also trust that they are not a vulnerable target for outside influences. I am confident that they will remain true to the cause. How refreshing this is in an era of hidden agendas, where I need to carefully read the latest privacy policy from businesses and even my own government. Opposing political ads send messages that perfectly contradict each other. They cannot both be true. What am I risking if I don t study every detail? The Steps and Traditions do not contain asterisks and end with fine print. They are simple and straightforward guidelines for living that mean exactly what they say. I sometimes muse about how much more open and honest all relationships (person to person, organization to organization, nation to nation) would be if they practiced this simple principle. Tradition 6 has impacted my recovery by providing a blanket of protection that keeps me safe and focused without being subjected to conflicting messages. I hear only the experience, strength, and hope that other members express regarding their recoveries. On another note, don t forget to check online and/or in this Al-Anoncer for the Timeline and Nomination forms for our upcoming elections. Also look online ( for any updates to the proposed By-Law changes. 12 Thank you to the members who submit questions to the Ask It Basket. It is such a fun part of our Al-Anoncer, and furthermore, of our recovery. We feel it is important to inform members to ask questions that follow our Legacies: The Twelve Steps, Twelve Traditions, Twelve Concepts and our General Warranties. If a question seems to be outside the Legacies we may not respond. An Al-Anon Member Writes: Meetings in our district are seeing court cards. What is SCWS policy on court cards? Dear Al-Anon Member: This question has come up frequently. There have been phone calls from individuals who have received DUIs and were looking specifically for Al-Anon meetings to have their court cards signed off. There have also been reports that individuals have come to Al-Anon meetings with court cards who were intoxicated. The Group is within their autonomy to not sign off on a court card in this instance. Our World Service Office was contacted regarding this question, and they replied: If the court card states that the person must attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and they are attending an Al-Anon meeting, with care and kindness it should be explained that they are not in an AA meeting and therefore their court card cannot be signed. This is not meant to deter Groups from signing court cards. Court cards, when signed, should always be signed at the end of the meeting. (Some meetings will have their group s Secretary or Chairperson sign the card, first name only, after the meeting is completed.) We always want to be welcoming. There are judges that send family members to Al-Anon and Alateen meetings and that is wonderful. Ad submissions must be in one of the following formats: PDF,.jpeg or Microsoft Word.doc or.docx. Do not ask us to design an ad for you based on information you send in. We will resize your ad as necessary to fit the page space you request (1/4-page, 1/2-page or full page). If you send in a full page copy of an ad you are requesting for publication in 1/4-page or 1/2-page please remember to double check the font sizes so that your text will be legible when reduced to the smaller format. If you do not request an ad size, the ad will default to the free 1/4-page ad. An Al-Anon Member Writes: It is my understanding that SCAC and other special events cannot be funded through the 7th Tradition. But if a group insists on doing so, should the funds be taken from 7th Tradition collected after the vote? Dear Al-Anon Member: SCAC, AA conventions with Al-Anon Participation, etc., are outside events and not considered part of the Group s usual expenses. Service Manual, pg. 9 The basket is passed to cover group expenses, including rent, purchase of literature, and sup-port of trusted servants and Al-Anon s service arms. Members who have donated to their group s 7th Tradition may have an expectation that their donations will be used according to the descriptions of the 7th Tradition such as in the pamphlet S-21, Seventh Tradition.. Our financial support provides the group with rent money for its meeting place, literature, information for newcomers, reimbursement or payment for the Group Representative s expenses to the Assembly and District meetings, and other group expenses. If a group wishes to contribute to another Al-Anon/Alateen event, a separate envelope/basket can be passed around clearly delineating what the individual contributions are for. 15 Al-Anon Tools for Recovery The Serenity Prayer Al-Anon suggests the words of the Serenity prayer can help us gain perspective, sort out what we can and can not do, and know when to act and when to let go. God grant me the Serenity To accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can, And wisdom to know the difference. Slogans Al-Anon uses slogans to assist members to recover during difficult times: Acceptance has to occur before change can occur An Expectation Is A Resentment Waiting To Happen Anger Is Just One Letter Short Of Danger Are you seeing the disease or the person Ask yourself Would you rather be right or happy? Be Honest But for the Grace of God, there go I Detachment, Not Amputation Doing service is like getting on the super highway to recovery Easy Does It Fake It Till You Make It!
