2 Mission Statement The United Way of Rowan County shall provide community-wide leadership to develop resources and assure their effective use for the delivery of needed human care services through these means: Consolidate fundraising to support continuous growth of necessary services Promote on-going education in all areas community, business, and agencies Evaluate and advise member agencies for efficient and effective use of resources Assess community needs, through short and long range planning Assure the provision of balanced services to the community 5 Easy Steps to Conduct a United Way Campaign CEO/Plant Manager welcomes employees and endorses the campaign Company Chair shares a personal story or has an agency recipient of services speak United Way representative and Company Chair extend invitation to give and asks for employees support Company Chair explains how the pledge cards will be distributed and collected and then introduces the United Way representative Company Chair collects pledge cards and thanks everyone. The United Way works to bring all health and human service programs together to solve critical needs, such as layoff assistance. Our emphasis is on volunteers. United Way dollars area are raised here --- and stay here.

3 Layoff Assistance Rowan County United Way began its layoff assistance program when Fieldcrest Cannon closed its doors, putting thousands of people out of work. We, along with our partner agencies, were able to assist the displaced workers with utilities, rent, food, YMCA memberships, mortgages, and many other services to help them get up on their feet. Rowan County United Way continues to be the catalyst when a company closes or experiences a downsize in employees Without help from United Way, I could have lost my home. I am so thankful for the Rowan County United Way and the ability to contribute to this organization. I was an employee of Freightliner and have been laid off 3 times in a 6 year period. With United Way s assistance I was referred to a local agency, Salisbury Community Development Corporation (SCDC), who assisted me with my mortgage. During my first layoff in 2008, they put us on short time which made it hard for me to meet my mortgage payment. Rowan County United Way provided funding to SCDC to assist displaced workers with a one-time mortgage payment. This prevented me from getting behind with my mortgage. I suffered another layoff in 2013 and was able to get assistance once again due to the United Way funding. After having a difficult time finding employment, SCDC partnering with United Way, was able to assist me in getting a loan from the Hardest Hit funds through the State of NC. This allowed me to keep my mortgage current while continuing to look for employment. This was made possible, in part, by my contribution which allows the Rowan County United Way to do what they do best, connect people in need with proven local resources that can assist them. TS

Through the United Way CIG Grant, we are able to provide free services to women whose lives have been devastated by substance abuse and have chosen sobriety. We thank RCUW for the tireless support and love they display throughout our community. Miriam Ramirez, Executive Director, Capstone Recovery Center 211 I ve been at Capstone Recovery Center since October of 2015 and it has changed my life in more ways than I can even name. I ve come from over three years of addiction and bad relationships. I m now over one-year sober, have my relationship with my family restored and have a relationship with Jesus Christ that I ve never had before. I wouldn t have been able to do it without Capstone. I ve tried for many years to do it on my own, and quickly learned I couldn t do it. During my time at Capstone, I have volunteered in several places including the Christmas Bureau. This was one of the many that touched my heart in an unexplainable way. I absolutely love the difference I can make in the community that I would have never been able to make while I as using drugs. 8 Day of Caring Southeast Middle School students are dissecting frogs in their outdoor classroom. Salisbury-Rowan Utilities built the classroom for the school as a United Way Day of Caring project Rowan County United Way Day of Caring offers resources and manpower that are typically unavailable to our school. We are blessed with a beautiful campus. Day of Caring has allowed for sidewalks that provide easier accessibility to our athletic fields and an amazing outdoor classroom for student learning. There are numerous projects at Southeast that have happened ONLY because of our United Way Day of Caring partnerships. Jennifer Lentz, Principal, Southeast Middle School Since its inception 21 years ago, Rowan County United Way Day of Caring (DOC) has been the largest volunteer event in our community. United Way leverages funds with volunteer labor, reduced prices or donated materials to complete projects at a very reduced rate. We make capital dreams come true for many schools and non-profits in our community. There is no way to begin to add up all the improvements DOC teams have accomplished. Each year hundreds of volunteers from companies and other organizations continue to amaze us with their willingness to assist in any way possible. It has also been a great learning experience for the students in our school system to see first-hand volunteerism at its best. In addition, the day provides an opportunity for our community to show their caring in a very visible and tangible way. From my perspective, the Day of Caring provides an opportunity for our employees to give back to the community and make a difference in the lives of children and schools within our community. Our employees are always excited about participating in the Day of Caring and contributing their time to meet the needs that Day of Caring provides. Brian Owen, Akzo Nobel The United Way Day of Caring demonstrates to the students in our building that serving others 1930 W. Jake Alexander Blvd. continues throughout your life. Our school has been a contender for the top middle school in Salisbury, NC our district for the Service Above Self Awards --- giving back to others is a key piece to the Southeast Middle School puzzle.
