I am happy to have watched us come together as a family again over the last six months with the improved morale, social events coordinated across all the organizations, donations and fund-raising Volume 1, Issue 3 raffles, community events supporting Veteran s recognitions, and donations to community and Veteran support groups. While this has been a great six months to address the recurring financial operating loss, we are not out of the woods yet. Some significant changes have been made that have helped stem an uncontrollable loss of cash, and more are needed to make the Post a financially sustainable operation. Please help pitch in and volunteer with your strengths and skillsets to help reduce operating costs. If you have a skill that you re willing to share so as to not have to pay a vendor to perform, we would be appreciative of your support. We are at a precarious financial crossroads where costs still exceed revenue, period. If something does not reverse this issue, we will lose the building. Any and all positive ideas are appreciated to the suggestion box. The leadership is listening and multiple changes have been made as a result. Please have a safe and happy December. Happy Holidays! Thanks to all who attended the Veterans day activities including the Mystery Bus Tour and Veterans Day Ceremony and luncheon provided by the Auxiliary and paid for by the SAL. December Events to remember: The children's is December 16th from 1pm-3pm, sign up is in the lounge at the bar. Mike Giannone s Touch of Gray Band with special guest Payton Clark will be making their first ever appearance at the Corning American legion Saturday, December 22 in the lounge from 430 until 630. This is the SAL s Christmas gift to the Legion Family so be sure to come out and join us! December Meetings BOD: 6pm POST: 6pm SAL: 6pm AUX: 6:30pm The next SAL meeting is Monday December 3rd at 6PM. 2 From the Auxiliary: The auxiliary held their regular meeting on Wednesday November 14 th with 16 members present. Meat Show was held Sunday November 18 th from 1:00 3:00 pm. Chili and cornbread was available for those attending. Thank you to all of those that attended, volunteered and supported the meat show. The following won the meat bundles: Scott Peck, Brenda Swanson, Peachy Schoonover, Deb King, Mike Harter, Shirley Ross, Beth Mashanic, Mary Pipe, Mike Patterson, Doug Kapral, Tom Barto and Bill Crane. Proceeds from the meat show will be used to support the Olive Stam Scholarship and other Veterans programs Auxiliary Dinners for the month of December are: Monday December 3 rd Meatloaf Monday - December 17 th Stuffed Pork Chops Children s will be held on Sunday December 16 th. Many activities are planned and Santa will be handing out gifts. Be sure to sign your children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews up sign up board is in the bar area. Thank you to Shirley Ross for the wonderful posts on Facebook of all the auxiliary and Legion Family events. A workshop to discuss volunteer hours/donations/mileage reporting will be on Wednesday November 28 th at 6:00 p.m. All are welcome to attend. Please bring a list of volunteer hours, donations, and mileage with you. There has been some questions about why we raised our dues from $25.00 to $35.00 and where does that money go. This is the breakdown: $11.00 per member goes to National, $9.00 per member goes to Department (NYS) and $15.00 stays with us. Out of the $15.00 we have certain county/district/department mandatory fees that we have to pay, such as but not limited to: $ for Empire Girls State (sending 2 citizens), $25.00 for Bath VA Field Day, $6.00 for Bond Insurance, $ $15.00 County and Department Donations, $5.00 for Steuben County Juniors and $5.00 for Past Steuben County Presidents. Reminder!!!! Dues are due and are $35.00 for seniors and $10.00 for juniors. You can pay your dues at the legion post or send to Mary Pipe (125 Weller Place Painted Post, NY 14870) Our membership goal is 280 as of November 13th we were at 71%. Next regular meeting will be held on Wednesday December 12th at 6:30 p.m. in Barrett Hall Steuben County Auxiliary Christmas meeting is Thursday December 6th at 6:30 at our Post. 5 2018 Veteran s Day Raffle Recap. Did we make some money for veteran s programs? Yes, we did!! And, that is a good thing. Was the raffle a resounding success, sadly, no it wasn t!! The following will give an overview of what goes into an event of this magnitude. This raffle is our biggest money generator for the whole year, but it fell well short of expectations. Physical cost of doing the raffle: 1500 tickets-$155.00, 1000 prestamped mailing envelopes-$571.80, return envelopes/paper-$97.69, (6) $ winners-$1500, for a total of $2, Number of actual raffle tickets soldapproximately 300 at $15 each for a total of $4500. Minus the physical cost, we made $2, Yes, we made some money. BUT, selling only 300 tickets out of a possible 1500 is not a good result. We, as an organization, need to do better. We mailed approximately 950 tickets in the mail, and each organization was given 125 extra tickets to sell. Some were saved for at the bar and at the door for the day of the drawing. The evening of the drawing, in our lounge, is what we all should strive for. Lots of folks coming and enjoying the festivities. Entertainment provided by Mooney was great. Shirly Ross generated over $1000 for the 50/50 drawing. Numerous door prizes provided by AUX & SAL and gun and grill raffle rounded out the drawings.
