1 What s happening at Bellambi Neighbourhood Centre APRIL 2017 Cnr Cawley Street and Rothery Street, Bellambi Open Monday to Friday 9am-3pm Ph: Welcome to the Bellambi Neighbourhood Centre! For over 30 years Bellambi Neighbourhood Centre has been a place for the local community to meet, share, learn and grow. BNC exists to serve the local community by providing information, referral and support services, as well as community events and activities, and a venue for outreach services. From the breakfast club, to the Food Hub; from the community lunch to our Young Beans Café we invite you to come in and join us. Chat to our friendly staff and volunteers, meet new people, dig in the garden, join activities, programs and workshops or just sit and enjoy a tea or coffee with us. Drop in and see what we have to offer. You are invited to drop in anytime Monday to Friday between 9am and 3pm to enjoy the safe, friendly atmosphere of the Bellambi Neighbourhood Centre. YOUNG BEANS CAFÉ The Young Beans are BACK! So now you can drop in for a coffee twice a week. Wednesday pm Friday 12 2pm Come and support our wonderful young barista s, enjoy a tea or coffee with cake in the lovely atmosphere of the Young Beans Café PUSH BIKE MAINTENANCE The team from the RIDEABILITY ABORIGINAL BIKE SAFETY PROGRAM spent a morning at BNC sharing safe bike riding tips and maintenance skills during the first week of the holidays. They have very kindly left bike maintenance tools, some helmets and drink bottles with us. So, if you have a flat tyre on your bike or need some help with simple bike maintenance you can now drop in Wednesday s after school 3-4pm IGNITE SCHOOL 2 WORK PROGRAM In partnership with Corrimal High School, BNC is running our pilot program of IGNITE School to Work. This program is aimed at supporting young people in their transition from school to further study or work. Students receive training in a supported environment gaining skills that will help them with their future work choices. Our Young Beans Café is proudly run by the IGNITE team. SPECIAL THANKS We would not be able to do what we do without the fantastic support of the following generous organisations and people. A BIG THANK YOU THIS MONTH TO Holy Spirit College Not only did the College donate a number of computers and laptops to us last year, but their technology and support staff member came down to the centre and set up all the computers and loaded the software we needed to ensure that all our computer classes have access to up to date programs. 2 COMING SOON TO BNC WE HAVE SOME GREAT PROGRAMS STARTING SOON OR RETURNING TO BNC REACH Wellbeing Group for Young Women REACH is a 9 week psycho-educational wellbeing group that helps participants with depression or bi-polar disorder manage their illness and stay well Eligibility: over 18 diagnosis of depression or bi-polar for a minimum of 1 year Capacity to partake in a group setting and a commitment to attend 8 weekly sessions Acceptance of illness Motivation to use personal change strategies When: commencing Monday 8 May Time: Where: BNC To register please call Nat A Black Dog Institute Program in partnership with Wollongong Women s Information Service MIINYA BIYANGA BOORI (Mother Father Baby) AMICH drop-in program for Aboriginal child and family health checks 0-4 years 2nd Wednesday of each month 1pm 3pm 10 May 14 June 12 July 9 August 13 September 11 October 8 November 13 December Drop in and meet the team for a child health check, a cup of tea and a yarn. Feeding Sleep & Settling Growth & Development Diet & Nutrition Speech, Language & Hearing Anti Natal Support and Referral Education & Referral A great opportunity to meet other mums, dads and bubs! You re welcome to come for the Community Lunch and stay for the Clinic. BELLAMBI 5 X 5 Would you like to go for a walk each Wednesday along the beautiful Bellambi Bike Path with some friends to encourage you along the way? Would you like to challenge yourself to walk a little further each week with the aim of walking 5 kilometres? Then join us for Bellambi 5x5. 5 weeks x a possible 5 kilometres a week. 3 BNC MEN S GROUP After a great start to the BNC Men s Group we will be regathering on Wednesday 26 th April - 10am in the Health room. Men getting together supporting men. Come along for a cuppa, try some of Bruce s scones and discuss projects, ideas, share stories and information, and plan future events, activities and outings. All men are welcome. Any age. Any cultural background. This is a non-discriminatory, drug and alcohol free group We look forward to seeing you there - Scott. WOLLONGONG YOUTH BNC Term 2 programs BACK IN APRIL SCHOOL HOMEWORK CLUBS Homework clubs are starting back for term 2 commencing the second week of the term. CHOOSE COOK EAT Tuesday afternoons pm 5.30pm YOUNG WOMEN S HIP HOP SESSIONS Wednesday afternoons 3.30pm-5.30pm For more information please check out the Wollongong Youth Services facebook page. The Smith Family Learning Club for primary school students WEDNESDAY afternoons from 3.15 The BNC High School Homework Club THURSDAY afternoons from 3.15 High school students will have access to the computer lab for homework. A healthy afternoon tea will be provided for both groups. COOK, CHILL, CHAT After enjoying a terrific 6 weeks of the Cook Chill Chat program the participants have decided to keep meeting every 2 weeks to continue to share a meal, learn new recipes and make new friends. Everyone is welcome to join Cook Chill Chat. Every second Monday from May 1st 10am 1.30pm Come along and share tips about healthy eating and cooking on a budget in a fun, relaxed environment. Cost $2.00 per week towards food. BROADBAND FOR SENIORS IS CHANGING DAY Broadband for seniors is moving from Wednesday to Friday If you are over 55 and would like to learn some new computer skills or brush up on your old ones, join David in the computer room. Everyone is welcome! We d love to see you there. Log on to check your s, pay bills or fill in forms. Limit of 10 minutes per user please. Help yourself to a glass of chilled water Thanks to our friends at Healthy Cities our new water cooler is getting a daily workout and is proving to be very popular addition to the BNC foyer. Keep an eye out for our colourful new reusable cups. We re reducing landfill & protecting the environment. Some of our services at BNC 3
4 The Illawarra Food Hub Bellambi Open from 10am 2pm Tuesday to Friday (closed for lunch between 12 & 12.30) We stock a terrific range of products including staple foods, meat, dairy products and eggs, cleaning and personal products, baby products, frozen goods and special goodies including chocolates and treats. Not to mention the great selection of fresh fruit and vegetables, cakes, bread and salads (all subject to availability) that you can pick up for a gold coin donation. Membership is free! A special thanks to our continuing partners BAKERS DELIGHT (Corrimal), NEED A FEED and our own BNC COMMUNITY GARDEN. Donations of rescued & fresh food are added to the food hub each week. ALL PROFITS FROM THE FOOD HUB ARE PUT BACK INTO THE FOOD PROGRAMS WE DELIVER AT BNC. EAPA VOUCHERS By appointment Tuesday 10-12, Thursday and Friday Please phone the centre to make an appointment if you need support and advice on budgeting for and paying your power bills. WORK DEVELOPMENT ORDERS (WDO s) Monday to Friday 9 3pm WDO s are a way to help eligible people who can't pay their fines through enrolling them in approved activities. Please contact us for details. EIPP YOUTH & FAMILY SUPPORT SERVICES Monday to Thursday 9am 3pm Please call to make an appointment to see Cate for any assistance for young people aged years & their families + young parents aged up to 24 years. Are you interested in volunteering at BNC? If so We need you! Once again a HUGE THANK YOU to all our wonderful volunteers! Without you all we would not be able to deliver the wide variety of services we offer. Due to an increase in programs and activities at the centre we are in need of more volunteers and we d love to talk to you if you have an hour or more you could donate to the centre each week. Some of the programs you can volunteer on are: The Breakfast Program Are you interested in helping children and young people get off to school having had a healthy breakfast with a nutritious lunch in their bag? Breakfast club runs Monday to Friday 7:30 8:30am plus clean-up Bread pick up We supply bread to our community through our Community Shop which we access from Baker s Delight Corrimal. Are you interested in picking up bread one or two nights a week? Monday to Thursday nights - 7:30pm 8:30pm BNC Community Shop Our Community Shop now has over 300 members. Are you interested in working in the shop for a couple of hours each week? Work hours are between 9:30-2:30 Tuesday to Friday. Front Office attendant Do you like chatting to people? Are you confident on the phone? Our front office staff are the first people with whom our community comes in contact. Office hours Monday are Friday 9am 3pm If any of these positions interest you please call Ann on or pop in and have a chat. Please note: Everyone who works at the BNC requires a Working With Children Check but don t worry, if you don t have access to a computer we can help you. 4
5 A few final notes Communicating with the Bellambi Neighbourhood Centre From time to time we all want to have a chat, make a complaint, offer praise or make a suggestion. We welcome all forms of communication at BNC. There are a variety of ways to get in contact with us. You can pop in any time Monday to Friday between 9am and 3pm and chat to staff or volunteers. If you call first on and make an appointment you will avoid disappointment if staff are busy. You can leave a confidential message for the BNC Board by placing it in a sealed envelope in the BNC Board tray in the front office. This tray is checked once each week and all correspondence reviewed at the subsequent board meeting. Become a member of BNC Members of Bellambi Neighbourhood Centre Inc. can support the running of the neighbourhood centre by attending members meetings and supporting the organisation in a number of different ways. Family & Domestic Violence Mentors Family and domestic violence is an issue in communities right across the country and Bellambi is no different from anywhere else in Australia. If you d like to talk to anyone about difficulties you may be experiencing, questions you might have regarding DV or you d like support seeking professional advice please either call or pop in to arrange a time to chat to one of our new DV mentors. All appointments and conversations are strictly confidential. Regular BNC VINNIES FOOD VAN Friday evenings from 5pm to 6pm The Food Van visits the centre every Friday evening. Everyone is invited to come down and share a hot meal and a tea, coffee or hot chocolate with Sapphire, Peter and their fabulous team of volunteers. Peter is now bringing down handballs and chalk if anyone wants to join in a fun game of handball before or after they ve had something to eat. Introducing CHRIS GORDON SMITH Chris teaches an art class at the centre every Monday night during the school terms from 6.30 to 9pm. She is a multi-exhibited and award winning artist who has been working for the past 21 years across the styles of fine art, folk and decorative art. She delights in sharing her skills with students eager to learn how to work with oils, acrylics and water colour. She has attracted a terrific group of students to BNC from beginners to established artists and is looking forward to having the opportunity to exhibit the work of all the students towards the end of this year.
