5 English OUR WORK ENGAGE ABOUT DONATE Recent Global Affairs Canada has announced the creation of a Famine Relief Fund to respond to the hunger crisis in East Africa. Over 20 million people are now at risk of starvation in what is being called the worst food emergency in recent history. Canadians are being urged to give generously to a registered Canadian charity that is responding to the African famine. Donations made to our African Famine response between March 17 to June 30 will be matched by the Canadian government. Minister of International Development and La Francophone, Marie-Claude Bibeau stated, Over 20 million men, women and children are at risk of starvation if we do not act now. Canadians have always demonstrated great compassion when it comes to humanitarian crises. I encourage all Canadians to donate to the registered Canadian charities of their choice. Together, we can make a difference and bring relief to people who need urgent help. ADRA Canada is already in the field with distributions currently being conducted in Somalia, Kenya and South Sudan, the countries hardest hit by this human Famine Relief Fund May 29th, Cooking for Health May 28th, Going to Sleep Hungry May 27th,

10 English OUR WORK ENGAGE ABOUT DONATE Going to Sleep Hungry Recent Drought and famine are once again causing hunger, human suffering, and death in many parts of East Africa. Forces of climate change, civil conflict, forced migration, economics, and disease are converging to create extreme shortages of food. The forecast of low rainfall for the coming months is making even the most optimistic observers gravely concerned. This food security crisis has compounded over the last 10 years and is expected to bring the worst food emergency in recent history. The two primary methods of livelihood in rural Africa are farming and raising animals. Droughts severely affect both methods of subsistence. With no grass or fodder to eat and little water, animals die. With no rains, crops fail. With the scarcity of food throughout the region the price of staple items are costing 300% the normal price, far beyond the reach of most people. Musili lives in a region of Kenya Famine Relief Fund May 29th, Cooking for Health May 28th, Going to Sleep Hungry May 27th,
11 that has been hit hard by drought. She has six children, the youngest are twin girls who are one and a half years old. Her husband has left her and does not send any support for the children. She moved back to her childhood farm after her parents died but because of the drought she has not been able to grow food for her children. To survive, Musili goes around her village and does small jobs for her neighbors, such as washing clothes. She never knows until she is done her work how much she will get, or even whether it will be money or a little food. Since times are difficult for everyone in the region, she doesn t get much work and there is never enough food to eat. Every time there is a small rain Musili gets hopeful that the drought is finally over and will run around to her neighbors asking them to share some seeds. She says, I also ask to borrow a hoe, and when I can t get one, I use my hands to plant. When the rains do not come and her seeds do not germinate, Musili must resort to going around the village, begging for food for her children. Unfortunately, most of her neighbors are struggling to feed their own children and are reluctant to share. 12 She says, As I speak to you, I have no food left. We sleep hungry almost every night. My children cry themselves to sleep. They are weak and don t have much strength. I feel so terribly bad. I am sad, depressed, confused, and can t stop wondering what else I could do. I sometimes think that it would actually be better to die than live with hunger. Life has become meaningless. The only thing that keeps me going every day is my children. Musili s sad story is the daily life that millions of people are facing throughout East Africa right now. The ADRA network is responding to the crisis in South Sudan, Somalia and Kenya. Musili and her children will be receiving food from ADRA s emergency response. Give an Easter Gift of Water! 15 English OUR WORK ENGAGE ABOUT DONATE Cooking for Health Bet is a 22 year old mother of one, living in a remote northern region of Cambodia. She and her husband moved to this part of Cambodia about a year ago to have a house close to the road. Bet s husband is a small engine mechanic and they are hoping that they will be able build up a good business here, as the province continues to grow and develop. So far things have been slow. With no farmland, they are not able to grow much food and are dependent on the income they can make from the repair work that comes their way. Bet s three year old girl keeps her busy, especially lately. Her daughter used to be quite pale and lethargic, often sick with diarrhea or colds. Recently all of that has changed. Here is what happened, as told by Bet. I first heard about ADRA when one of the ADRA staff came to visit me in my home. She invited me to join a Recent Famine Relief Fund May 29th, Cooking for Health May 28th, Going to Sleep Hungry May 27th,
16 women s group that ADRA was forming in my village. She told me that they would be discussing many topics about family life, health and nutrition. It sounded very interesting to me. I am always eager to learn! I have a young daughter and I want to learn everything I can about how I can be a better mother. I want to have a good life for myself and my family. I have learned a lot of things at the ADRA group. They call it a Reflect Circle group which is a good name I think, because all of us who have joined have had a chance to reflect on our lives, and what we can do to change things for the better. When we first started, most of us were quite shy and were afraid to speak up but by the third session we were all participating in the discussions and asking a lot of questions. We have been attending now for only about six months but already we have had many discussions on how to raise children, how to protect them from disease, and keep them safe. We have learned about the importance of good hygiene around the home and why we need to wash hands before cooking and eating. We have also learned a lot about good nutrition. Before, I used to cook a lot of salty foods for my family and I used a lot of MSG. In the ADRA Reflect Circle, we have learned that this diet is not good for our health, ADRA Connections Peru May 27th, Fighting Malnutrition April 27th, ADRA Canada is Responding to the Hunger Crisis in Africa April 27th, Good Nutrition April 20th,
17 especially for my little girl. Now when I cook, I use a lot of vegetables and greens. I do my best to include something from each of the three main food groups that are important for good health. I no longer use much salt and have completely stopped using MSG. I used to cook for taste, now I cook for good health! Before joining the program my baby girl was pale and skinny, not very active. She used to get sick a lot. Since I started cooking nutritious meals, her appetite has gotten better. She has gained weight and is now brighter and happier! She hardly ever gets sick anymore! I am very happy that the ADRA Program has come to our village. It doesn t matter how busy I am, whenever the group is g I drop everything and join the group. I believe that the Reflect Circle has helped all of us get to know each other better and has given us a chance to encourage each other to be better mothers. Thank you ADRA!
