4 Recruit A Campaign Committee An organized committee will give you the resources needed to develop and conduct your campaign. Recruit volunteers: Campaign volunteers provide one-on-one contact with potential supporters, answering questions, sharing their personal experiences with Vera House and serving as point-persons to distribute lapel pins, wristbands and chocolates. Recruit campaign volunteers at a ratio of one volunteer for every employees. Volunteers can assist with promoting the campaign within their department, office, or building. Offer incentives for volunteers: As a token of gratitude and to get volunteers energized, consider paying for volunteers attendance at the White Ribbon Campaign Breakfast on Monday, March 16, 2015, at the Holiday Inn, Liverpool. If you have the resources, consider offering other small incentives to recognize participation in the campaign. Delegate tasks for each volunteer: Assignments for each volunteer may include: Helping to coordinate a kick-off rally. Hanging posters. Serving as point-person to distribute lapel pins, wristbands and chocolates. Collecting and tracking funds raised throughout the campaign. Keeping inventory of ribbon, wristband and chocolate stock; re-ordering as necessary

10 Sample s to Help Promote Awareness Day 2 Sample Title: DATING & SEXUAL VIOLENCE Content: Approximately 75% of sexual assaults are committed by someone known to the victim. One study found that 38% of date rape victims were young women from 14 to 17 years of age. About one in three high school students have been or will be involved in an abusive relationship. Dating and domestic violence causes far more pain than the visible marks of bruises and scars. It is devastating to be abused by someone that you love and you think loves you in return. It is estimated that approximately 3 million incidents of domestic violence are reported each year in the United States. Stand With Us to end domestic & sexual violence. It can follow them, resulting in violence in the workplace. Or it can spill over into the workplace when an employee is harassed by threatening phone calls, absent because of injuries, or less productivity due to extreme stress. Studies indicate that nearly 75% of employed domestic violence victims are harassed at work. Each year, domestic violence results in an estimated 8 million missed work days. 11 Sample s to Help Promote Awareness Day 4 Sample Title: HOW YOU CAN HELP Content: A community of support is necessary to help a survivor reach safety and peace. Whether you are a parent, friend or unacquainted bystander, you have the ability to become involved. Helping your friend or loved one begins by letting them know that you are concerned, that they are not alone, that they don t deserve the abuse and that help is available. To break out of the cycle of abuse, victims need to have supports they can to turn to. If a friend or family member does turn to you, the following suggestions may be helpful (visit for more tips): Let the victim talk. Just having someone who will listen will help her or him take stock of the situation. Let the victim know how important his or her safety is to you, and work together to develop a safety plan. Share information about available resources in the community. Offer to go with your friend the first time to pursue any of the resources. Stress that the violence is not the victim s fault and that she or he does not deserve to be abused. No matter what your friend has said or done, the person who becomes violent is the one responsible for the violence. Stand With Us to end domestic & sexual violence. Day 5 Sample Title: THE USE OF VIOLENCE IS NEVER JUSTIFIED Content: Being abusive is a learned behavior, not a mental illness. Abusers experiences as children, and the messages they get from society in general, tell them that violence is an effective means to achieve power and control over their partners. Abusers are accountable for their actions. Victims never control a batterer s use of violence. Victims are not to blame nor do they ever deserve such abuse. 12 Facts The WHITE RIBBON CAMPAIGN is led by concerned men who invite all members of the community men and women, young and old to pin on a ribbon or wear a wristband and join them in raising awareness and funds to end domestic and sexual violence. This male leadership helps to acknowledge the important contributions men have made to this effort and invites others to take a role. THIS YEAR S GOAL IS TO DISTRIBUTE 40,000 WHITE RIBBONS to individuals, businesses, educational institutions, community organizations and places of worship throughout Onondaga County. THE SUCCESS OF OUR 2015 CAMPAIGN IS CRITICAL as it funds Vera House programs and services. Last year s campaign raised over $120,000 and WE HOPE TO RAISE EVEN MORE THIS YEAR! TED LONG, 93Q MORNING SHOW CO-HOST, is the 2015 White Ribbon Campaign Honorary Chair. Vera House has been working to end domestic and sexual violence in Onondaga County for more than 35 years. The agency provides shelter, advocacy, and counseling services for women, children & men, education and prevention programs and community coordination. In women, children and men were sheltered 4,827 calls were answered on our 24-hour Crisis & Support Line 352 women & men were served in our New Directions: Rape Crisis & Sexual Assault Program 424 children used our Youth Counseling services 1,456 individuals were served in our Outreach & Advocacy program 607 individuals participated in Alternatives, STEPS & DVIP, domestic violence education & accountability programs. 18,824 people were reached with our school-based, community & professional education programs Vera House is committed to ensuring our programs and services are welcoming to everyone

13 Suggestions For Action Here are some ways to work to end domestic and sexual violence in our community before, during and after your White Ribbon Campaign! Encourage your friends, family members, and co-workers to learn more about violence and abuse including dating violence, rape and sexual harassment. A good place to begin is by listening to people discuss their experiences, or inviting Vera House staff to come make a presentation. To schedule a speaker, contact Loren Cunningham at (315) x 208 or lcunningham@verahouse.org. Get involved in work to help create change. It may be talking with others, volunteering through your school, religious community, with Vera House or with the Syracuse Area Domestic and Sexual Violence Coalition. Change takes a coordinated community effort. Challenge people when they make jokes or comments that put women or any group of people down. Examine your own attitudes and behaviors as they may relate to the problem. Each of us can work to be more respectful in our relationships. Organize a Campaign at your workplace, organization, place of worship or school. Vera House will provide you with all the materials you will need to conduct a successful Campaign. Don t have time to organize a Campaign? Please wear a white ribbon or wristband. Change will occur if we each accept personal responsibility to make sure it happens. Wearing a ribbon provokes discussion, debate and soulsearching among the people around us. 14 History of the Campaign The White Ribbon Campaign began in Canada in On December 6, 1989, a man murdered 14 women at a university in Montreal. This shocking tragedy prompted a group of concerned men to launch an awareness campaign on the issue of violence against women. These men encouraged other men and boys to pin on a white ribbon as a personal acknowledgement of the important role men need to play in the efforts to end violence against women. Vera House, which has been working to end domestic violence in Onondaga County for over 35 years, brought the White Ribbon Campaign to Central New York in We have maintained the important element of male leadership of the Campaign while expanding participation to include everyone in the community interested in ending abuse - MEN & WOMEN. This year s White Ribbon Campaign will involve more than 40,000 individuals in the greater Syracuse community. During the period of March 20-29, 2015, people will be working to raise awareness and funds to support Vera House education and awareness programs and services. With the participation of the entire community, we are sure to reach our fundraising goal of $125,000!
