2 The annual Latex Ball is the largest ball of the international House and Ball community. The event is attended by thousands of people from the New York metro area, across the nation, and around the world, including famous photographers, designers, models, and members of the House and Ball community. The event features competitions in dance, vogueing, and fashion, and incorporates HIV prevention and sexual health messaging provided by GMHC and other health organizations. Each year, the Latex Ball receives high-profile media coverage from MSNBC, Papermag.com, BET.com, TheBody.com, Village Voice, Logo TV (NewNowNext), El Diario, Next Magazine and WWRL (1600 AM). This year, the Latex Ball will be held on Saturday, August 16, 2014 at Terminal 5 from 7 pm to 4 am. Event Overview

4 House and Ball Heritage House and Ball culture began in Harlem in the 1930s, and now, the community is thought to include more than 20,000 in New York City alone, and tens of thousands more around the world. The House and Ball community is made up of houses which act as a supportive social structure for young gay/bisexual/transgender men and women. This structure provides a surrogate family for those whose sexual orientation often results in rejection and homelessness. As a surrogate family, a house has a house mother, house father, and children who take on the house name as their House and Ball surname. David Ian, the Father of the Iconic House of Xtravaganza Balls are events at which house members walk (or compete) for trophies or respect. Participants often dance or vogue, while others compete in a variety of categories that celebrate culture and art. Members of the houses, young and old, compete in balls and related activities throughout the year.

5 House and Ball s Influence Madonna s hit Vogue was inspired by Vogue dancers. She toured Blonde Ambition around the world with Jose and Luis Xtravaganza. Wet n Wild Fergie Vicious Varnish High Shine Lip Stain celebrates the House and Ball community by using a House and Ball term to name each shade. The House & Ball community has a remarkable influence on pop culture Patricia Field is an New York City costume designer, stylist and fashion designer, whose trend-setting and unconventional style is heavily influenced by the House and Ball community. Jennie Livingston s 1990 definitive documentary Paris is Burning follows members of the House and Ball community over seven years.

7 GMHC: Who we are & WHy It Matters Who We Are: Gay Men s Health Crisis (GMHC) is the world s first and leading provider of HIV/AIDS prevention, care and advocacy. GMHC was founded in 1981 and it currently serves 9,000 people each year from its headquarters in Chelsea, Manhattan. Our mission is simple: GMHC fights to end the AIDS epidemic and uplift the lives of all affected. Why Your Support Matters: At the onset of the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s, the House and Ball community lost many members. In 1989, GMHC and House leaders created the House of Latex Project to link community members with resources to help prevent the further spread of HIV. Today, GMHC staff conduct outreach at balls, LGBTQ youth venues, and through social media networks to promote HIV prevention and safer sex messaging. AIDS is not over. In fact, awareness is down as new infections are up among people of color, men who have sex with men, and women. Particularly affected by the epidemic are young black gay men, who have a roughly one-in-four chance of being infected by age 25. The roots of the HIV/AIDS epidemic are wide and deep, and complicated by stigma, misinformation and the increasing cost of healthcare. With your support, we can end the epidemic by addressing the underlying causes, shifting cultural beliefs, and promoting smart behaviors that empower a healthy life for all of us.
