2 II UNC Hospital s Center for Rehabilitation Care Recognized As A Partner in MS Care in Rehabilitation By The National Multiple Sclerosis Society Featured Left to Right: Bottom Row: Kristina Fransel (MS Society), Valerie Miller, Audrey Osinski, Diane Meyer, CJ Hamilton, Stefanie Veno, Paige Dalton (MS Society), Top Row: Sam Lucier (PT Student), Dietra Buxton, Tricia Agnoli, Corinne Bohling Chapel Hill UNC Center for Rehabilitation Care, a leading provider of care for people living with MS in North Carolina has been officially recognized as a Partner in MS Care in Rehabilitation through the National Multiple Sclerosis Society s Partners in MS Care program. This formal recognition honors UNC Center for Rehabilitation Care s commitment to providing exceptional, coordinated MS care; and a continuing partnership with the Society to address the challenges of people affected by MS. The Society s Partners in MS Care program recognizes committed providers, like UNC Center for Rehabilitation Care, whose practices support the Society s initiative of affordable access to high quality MS healthcare for everyone living with MS regardless of geography, disease progression, and other disparities. We are so proud to partner with UNC Center for Rehabilitation Care to enhance coordinated, multi-disciplinary care for the people who live with MS in North Carolina, said Kristina Fransel, President of the National MS Society, Greater Carolinas Chapter. In earning this recognition, UNC Center for Rehabilitation Care has demonstrated extraordinary leadership in MS care, making a tremendous impact on people affected by MS in our community, Fransel continued. 3 III Hats For Hope Drive Oncology & BMT This was the 10 th year that I have helped to coordinate the Hats for Hope event in oncology. The organization was developed to honor the memory of a past pediatric BMT patient that passed away in This year, the group brought several thousand items to be donated for both pediatric and adult patients. The items donated included hats, scarves, gloves, etc. as well as some coloring books, puzzles, etc. The drive was originally designed to benefit our BMT patients, however it has grown so much over the years that we are now able to share the items provided with multiple units in the hospital. In addition to BMT/4ONC, we also took donations to 5 Children s, Peds Hem/Onc clinic, adult BMT and Hem/ONC clinic, the Burn Center, Rehab and Psyc. We had representatives from Lineberger that came to take pictures and are in the process of completing a story for the website/social media, but it hasn t been released yet. 4 IV Evening at the Angus Barn The NSCIA hosted an Evening at the Angus Barn on October 25 th, 2018 as 11 th annual Wine Gala Fundraising event. Several Rehab therapists were in attendance to support the association, as we work with the SCI population at UNC hospitals. NCSCIA Mission Statement: To enable people with spinal cord injury and disease (SCI/D) to achieve their highest level of independence, health, and personal fulfillment by providing resources, services, and peer support. The association continues to provide communication, support, information and advocacy in the community setting. 5 V Roc the Ride 2018 Keith Compson, Rehab Manager of Inpatient Pediatrics Roc the Ride 2018 Benefiting Roc Solid Foundation Inc. This past fall, I was honored to participate in the Roc the Ride 2018 campaign through the Roc Solid Foundation. Roc to Ride is an annual event that takes place in September during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month to help promote attention to Rox Solid s mission to build hope for kids with cancer. Roc the Ride 2018 raised $118, % of the money raised by team members (totaling $91,000) will go directly to families fighting pediatric cancer. We are incredibly proud of that, and are extremely grateful for the impact that money will have. Featured above: Lacy, family, and Keith Compson My Why for this ride was to give back to an organization that has supported and served the patients of UNC while at the same time provided hope and inspiration to our families and staff. I rode in honor of Lacy who recently completed her course of treatment and was one of the beneficiaries of a Roc Solid Play Set. The ride was an amazing experience capped off by The Final Mile where we joined over 100 kids and their families who are all part of The Roc Solid Family. Together, we followed a limo and police escort to the home of 2 year-old CoCo to reveal his brand new play set. For more information on how you can get involved through the Roc Solid Foundation by volunteering or sponsoring a project visit V
