3 EDUCATIONAL PRESENTATIONS Staying Compliant: Documenting to Support Medical Necessity Physical therapy services continue to stay on the audit radar for various medical review entities. Participants will be provided with knowledge in how to maintain compliance with requirements for clinical documentation, as well as how to improve their documentation while demonstrating skill and medical necessity for physical therapy services. Current trends regarding documentation issues will be highlighted - Aimee Riegel, PT, DPT Treatment of Patient s Who Push - is a course aimed at examining the phenomenon of Pusher Syndrome. Therapists are often challenged by the unique presentation of this patient group and typical treatment interventions fail to address the true limiting impairments for a Pusher. The course aims to address this clinical skill deficit and improve assessment through treatment prescription. Literature is reviewed and treatment suggestions are discussed. The course aims to identify the pusher patient and categorize that unique patient into a classification that guides treatment intervention based on the ICF Model of Disablement. Appropriate assessment tools and functional performance tests are examined. As a mixed lecture and lab course, treatment interventions are demonstrated and practiced as time allows. Video and participant demonstration are used. Michelle Green, PT, DPT, c-ndt, NCS Ethical Issues in Coding and Billing for Physical Therapy Services, Part 1 - Have you ever asked a coding or billing question in your clinic, at a workshop, etc. and received different answers from everyone? This course will use source documents, such as the AMA CPT Manual and Medicare Part B rules and regulations, to provide you the source-based information about how we should be coding and billing for our services. Numerous examples will be provided and interactive coding and billing exercises will be completed. Only after we are sure we are doing everything correctly and legally can we then discuss the ethics of coding and billing Mark Dwyer, PT, MHA, FACHE Where Does Physical Therapy Fit into Concussion Management: Current Evidence Based Practice Theories Concussion, also known as mild traumatic brain injury (mtbi), is a very common condition in the United States, accounting for 80% of all traumatic brain injuries with as many as 3.8 million injuries occurring yearly from sport-related events alone. The word Concussion has become a household topic of discussion and clinical practice guidelines are currently being established to manage this pathology. These practice guidelines include the role of physical therapy to manage a multitude of symptoms to include orthopedic, vestibular- ocular as well as part of the multidisciplinary team involved in post concussive syndrome. The body of literature about concussion is constantly changing and expanding and this course is designed to provide current review of evidence and literature on medical practice and physical therapy role in concussion management - Becky Bliss, PT, DPT, c-ndt Strengthening the Geriatric Patient for Function - This educational offering will provide therapists with the ability to progress our geriatric patient s exercise prescription from muscular endurance in single plane motions to integrated strength and power training in multi-planar activities. The ICF Model will be the framework to guide the clinician through the process of determining the specific impairments limiting function through exercise selection and progression. A variety of exercises related to commonly seen impairments (difficulty sustaining closed-chain knee extension, poor glute activation, retropulsion) will be presented and supporting literature offered. A combination of lecture, discussion, pictures, and video examples will be used Michelle Green, PT, DPT, c-ndt, NCS Born to Run Well - Running is a wonderfully intricate and individualistic melding of foot, ankle, knee, hip, trunk, and upper body motion. This lecture is designed to both teach clinicians how to examine these intricate motions, and to communicate conclusions that can be drawn by telescoping up to a 5000-foot view of running research in its entirety BJ Lehecka, PT, DPT ABC's of Manual Therapy for the PTA PTAs use a variety of manual therapy techniques across the spectrum of physical therapy to help their patients. Do you wish you knew more about what manual therapy can be used for, or just want to further enhance your techniques? This hands-on course is designed to provide both conceptual and practical training on a variety of techniques to improve patient outcomes. Participants will leave with not only enhanced understanding of a variety of techniques but practical skills they can use when they return to the clinic on Monday - Zach Frank, PT, DPT, CSCS, CEAS

4 EDUCATIONAL PRESENTATIONS Continued Fill Your Exercise Toolbox for the PTA - Have you ever said, My favorite exercise isn t working with this patient? or I can t think of anything to do to keep my patient motivated? While we all have our favorite (and lease favorite) exercises, continuing to add to our exercise toolbox will allow us to have a multitude of options available when the old standbys aren t working. This interactive course will focus on expanding your exercise toolbox as participants will be actively engaged in sharing their favorite activities for various scenarios - Tiffany Bohm, PT, DPT, MPT The ICF Model of Disablement - This course will bring the ICF Model to life. Therapists need a framework to guide the process from assessment to intervention selection in all practice settings. Therapists can benefit from the guidance of a framework which will assist the them in upholding the APTA s vision of Transforming society by optimizing movement to improve the human experience.. The ICF Model offers insight to disablement and how it impacts our patients and guides the assessment to determine the specific, individualized impairments limiting function and full life participation. Come find out how the ICF Model is the missing link in the clinical reasoning process - Michelle Green, PT, DPT, c-ndt, NCS Nutrition Perspectives in Physical Therapy - Nutrition Perspectives in Physical Therapy provides the physical therapist with a unique and timely opportunity to explore the connections between rehabilitation and nutritional sciences. This course is an overview for the physical therapist who wishes to examine the impact of nutrition on conditions commonly encountered in the clinical setting. The topic of nutrition related to scope of practice and health-focused rehabilitation will be examined. Discussion will also cover the recently passed APTA motion RC which endorses the role of the physical therapist as a provider of information regarding diet and nutrition - Megan Pribyl, PT, CMPT Nutrition Correlates to Pain and Healing Nutrition Correlates to Pain and Healing is a course designed to explore the interconnected nature of stress, gut microbiota, pain, and healing response. Nutrition plays a profound and underrecognized role in the physiological functions of the human body. By examining the relationship between the digestive and neuro- musculo-skeletal systems, the physical therapist can identify nutritional correlates relevant to the clinical setting. This nutrition information can positively impact those patients suffering from conditions such as chronic pain and other ubiquitous conditions encountered in today s health care setting - Megan Pribyl, PT, CMPT Physical Therapy Considerations for the High Intensity Fitness Athlete - High intensity exercises classes and fitness programs are rapidly gaining in popularity. These programs use movements that are not fully understood by physical therapists. In order to maximize patient outcomes, the physical therapist requires exposure to the unique skills and movement patterns that high intensity fitness programs employ. The purpose of this course is to introduce common exercises, standards for correct performance and strategies to optimize movement patterns for any individual who wants to participate in high intensity fitness Judy Gelber, PT, DPT, OCS, CSCS Movement Impairments of the Foot and Ankle - Multiple factors play a role in foot and ankle pain, and therefore a one size-fits-all treatment approach can be ineffective. The purpose of this course is to offer a paradigm for a systematic physical therapy examination and treatment of foot and ankle pain. Particular attention will be given to static alignment and movement analysis, as well as patient specific impairments that can contribute to a given injury or pain problem Judy Gelber, PT, DPT, OCS, CSCS Thoracic manipulation. A cure-all or unnecessary risk? - Over recent years the physical therapy literature has seen many publications on the benefits of thoracic manipulation. It appears that it will positively impact many musculoskeletal dysfunctions, but is the patient/client benefitting in the long term? Is the physical therapist practitioner adequately screening for potential risks? Is the smaller practitioner straining their own body while performing the techniques? The presentation will summarize efficient clinical reasoning tools to make the best choice for the short and long term benefit of the patient/client - Ann Porer Hoke PT, DPT, OCS, FAAOMPT Ethical Issues in Coding and Billing for Physical Therapy Services, Part 2 - Since the first part of this course discussed the legality (compliance) of billing and coding, this course naturally progresses to the question what do we do now? This course will be a discussion based course that will review basic ethical principles and use an ethical framework to facilitate discussion on approaching the ethics of coding and billing. Examples will be provided and solicited from the audience to discuss the conflicting principles and positions, and barriers leading to a thoughtful ethical reflection of coding and billing practice Yvonne Colgrove, PT, PhD, Mark Dwyer, PT, MHA, FACHE, Megan Wiederholt, SPT and Alex Chiles, SPT
