3 EDUCATIONAL PRESENTATIONS Imaging Review: Modalities and Practice Guidelines - This continuing education course consists of discussing imaging modalities including radiographs, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound, and bone scans. Normal images are compared to abnormal images and correlations drawn between structure and function. Case studies are used to show correlations between structure, function, and effect on functional activity. In addition, this workshop examines evidence-informed clinical practice guidelines to promote physical therapists formulating appropriate imaging or treatment decisions for musculoskeletal conditions. Applying these guidelines may improve quality of care and foster the efficacious use of radiology. Bryan M. Bond, DC, MS, PhD Breaking Down the New Evaluation Codes: An Interactive Course Are you confused by the new complexity levels for PT evaluations? Do you have questions regarding how to select the most appropriate complexity level for your evaluations? Now that we have implemented the new evaluation and reevaluation codes, many questions have surfaced and the difference in complexity levels continues to be unclear for many clinicians. This will be an interactive course on the New Evaluation Codes for Physical Therapy. During this session, we will provide a quick overview of the New Evaluation Codes. Aimee Riegel, PT, DPT A New Approach to Biomechanics and Orthotics - MASS Posture Theory is unique: it looks at managing foot biomechanics from an engineering perspective. Dr. Glaser offers the first credible challenge to the standard, industry tech-niques originated by Root, Orien and Weed in MASS Posture Theory emphasizes the importance of actually changing the functional posture of the foot in the overpronator, enabling the healthy levels of supination required for non-pathological gait. For the more rigidly set over-supinator, you will learn about full contact support that disperses plantar pressures evenly, alleviating the tripod force concentrations that can be progressively trau-matic. This course is refreshing, entertaining and has the most impressive 3-D animations of foot and lower extremity in the field. MASS Posture Theory is immediately pertinent to all who are involved or interested in biomechanical management of the foot and lower kinetic chain. Dr. Edward Glaser, DPM One Size Does Not Fit All: Deciphering Which Tests and Measures Optimize Functional Assessments and Outcomes - This course provides participants with current evidence on functional patient assessment and outcomes as well as online resources. The presentation will demystify statistics and fundamentals associated with tests and measures in rehabilitation. This will enable clinicians to effectively determine which tool to use to optimize patient assessment and outcomes and document evidence of deficits and improvements. Jennifer Vincenzo, PT, MPH, PhD, CHES, GCS Manual Therapy for the Hip and Lower Quarter: Techniques and Supporting Evidence - Manual therapy treatment techniques are an important aspect in the recovery from many musculoskeletal injuries. Treating lower quarter injuries with joint mobilization can improve patient outcomes and reduce recovery time. The participants of this course will learn hip and lower quarter joint mobility assessment and treatment techniques for both nonoperative and post-surgical patients. The participants will also learn to assess adverse neural tension conditions and treat them effectively with manual intervention strategies. Emphasis will be given to practicing these interventions during lab-time. This course will boost the therapist's confidence in choosing and implementing effective manual therapy strategies for common hip, knee, and ankle pathologies. Mitchell Barber, PT, MPT, MTC, OCS, FAAOMPT and Scarlett Morris, PT, DPT, MTC, OCS Management of Physeal Injuries and Fractures in Adolescent Athletes There continues to be an increased demand on our young athletes from early specialization and year round organized sports participation. As a result of the repetitive volume and other factors, there is an associated increase in unique fractures and injuries to our young athlete s growth plates. This course will highlight the important factors of the growth plate anatomy, management of these injuries, and specific case examples of operative and non-operative patients. This is especially pertinent to physical therapist s secondary to the ability to see patients through direct access as well as aiding in differential diagnosis when rehabilitation is not progressing. It will also be pertinent for physical therapist assistants who will be assisting in the treatment of these patients. Jason Yoder, DPT Current Evidence on Improving Balance and Decreasing Falls in Older Adults course will provide participants with an understanding of complexity of the balance/postural control system and the changes that occur with age. Modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors for imbalance and falls will be addressed. This will bridge the gap to current evidence on exercise-based and non-exercise based interventions designed to improve balance and decrease falls in older adults. Novel and creative concepts for interventions will also be presented. Jennifer Vincenzo, PT, MPH, PhD, CHES, GCS
4 EDUCATIONAL PRESENTATIONS Continued Physical Therapy in the Context of Community Health - This course will explore the link between community health and physical therapy outcomes. It will encourage physical therapists to consider how all the various factors that influence overall health within a community can affect physical therapy treatment outcomes. Starting with the examination of one county's data, attendees will learn how to obtain and interpret data about the health of their local community (e.g., from County Health Rankings and Roadmaps) and will consider a variety of strategies that physical therapists can use to improve the overall health of their local community. Brian McKiernan, PT, PhD Bridging the Gap between Rehabilitation and Performance in the Throwing Athlete The overhead baseball motion and the unique windmill softball pitch are two of the highest stress and dynamic movements that our athletes perform. Each of these movements has very unique phases and musculoskeletal requirements from the entire kinetic chain. Clinical progressions will be demonstrated for the upper quarter including proper use of weighted balls. There will also be increased understanding of how to get our throwers to use their legs and core in relation to their throwing motions. Jason Yoder, DPT Evidence-Based Treatment of Orthopedic and Sports Related Knee Injuries This exciting four hour session will discuss the basics of clinical examination of the knee. Biomechanics of knee exercise will discuss the stresses and forces placed upon the knee with both open and closed kinetic chain exercises and how they affect the anterior cruciate ligament, posterior cruciate ligament and the patellofemoral joint. Following these basic topics a more in depth look will be taken at treatment following one of the most recent forms of treatment for patellar instability - medial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction. The session will end with a talk on treatment of one of the most common knee conditions seen by therapists knee osteoarthritis. Robert C. Manske PT, DPT, MPT, MEd, SCS, ATC, CSCS Lymphedema, Differential Diagnosis & Overview of Treatment - Lymphedema is the abnormal accumulation of protein-rich fluid in the interstitial spaces. Lymphedema can happen for a number of reasons, cancer and chronic venous insufficiency amongst them. Even though certification courses are recommended to be a proficient clinician in treating this disease, a more thorough understanding of the pathology can be had by all clinicians. And through this understanding, clinicians from acute care to home health to outpatient orthopedic clinics can better serve any patient with edema, or swelling, in general. Knowing what separates lymphedema from other types of swelling can help make the decision to treat or refer out to a specialist. And knowing the gold standard care for lymphedema can help to empower a patient to take an active role in their own management of swelling. Participants will basic anatomy and physiology of the lymph system and how dysfunctions in this system can lead to swelling. Christina Wright PT, DPT, CLT, CES, PhD-Student The Pelvic Floor - is a group of muscles at the bottom of the pelvis that play an integral role in support, continence, and sexual function. Part of the inner core, these muscles are often overlooked when assessing function. Cancer treatments, such as surgery, radiation, and hormonal therapy, can negatively affect these muscles and create dysfunctions that significantly impact quality of life for survivors of cancer. Patients with a history of cancer create a large portion of any clinic s population, and all clinicians would benefit from knowing what other dysfunctions their patients may have and some pelvic floor treatment basics. Sometimes referring to a specialist is in the patient s best interest, but not always when and how can YOU provide better overall care to these patients? Christina Wright PT, DPT, CLT, CES, PhD-Student Incorporating Concepts from IV Step into Neurologic Practice Across the Lifespan: Prevention, Prediction, Plasticity, and Participation - This course will be focused on dissemination of information and topics that were covered at the APTA s IV Step Conference that was held in The Pediatric and Neurology Sections joined forces and experts in both fields presented information designed to introduce new theories and research related to movement science, and to translate current evidence into physical therapy practice for individuals of all ages with neurologic disorders. IV Step s main themes were focused on the 4 P s; Prevention, Prediction, Plasticity and Participation which will all be reviewed and each theme will be discussed in depth to be applied to clinical practice. Patricia Kluding, PT, PhD; Catherine F. Siengsukon, PT, PhD; Linda D'Silva, PT, PhD; Dr. RuiPing Xia; and Becky Bliss, PT, DPT, NCS, c/ndt; New Trends in the Medical and Surgical Treatments of Breast Cancer and Rehabilitation Implications - This lecture will address medical and surgical interventions for breast cancer and the side-effects associated with these treatments. By knowing the body structures affected by breast cancer treatments, the therapist can better personalize treatment plans to improve patients physical activity and participation both during and after treatment. Patient cases will be presented and analyzed to see the role and impact physical therapy has on function and quality of life. Finally, this lecture will inform therapist how to develop and incorporate a breast prospective surveillance model into your clinic. Rachel Neuhold DPT, CES
