The use of ultrasound will be explored in two major areas: examination of injury or disease for diagnostic purposes, and Rehabilitative Ultrasound Imaging (RUSI). Applications of RUSI include evaluation of muscular structure and behavior, and the use of USI as a biofeedback mechanism. After completion of this course, the participant will gain an understanding of technical aspects of USI; learn basic 4
5 concepts of interpreting ultrasound images; discuss the application of US in physical therapy practice; discuss the role of USI in physical therapy diagnosis; gain an understanding of applications of RUSI in physical therapy practice. Presenters: Kathy Swanick, PT, DPT, OCS and Arie J. Van Duijn, PT, EdD, OCS, MTC Saturday, March 23, :30 12:00 pm 3.5 CEHs Stress Urinary Incontinence and the Patient with Chronic Low Back Symptoms This course will introduce the common diagnosis of stress urinary incontinence in the context of an orthopedic evaluation as it pertains to patients with chronic low back pain. The implications of urinary incontinence in the orthopedic patient present a multitude of potential treatment options. Emphasis and interplay of the pelvic floor muscles, transversus abdominis, multifidus and diaphragm with regards to childbearing, abdominal/low back surgical intervention and exercise regimes will be discussed. Upon conclusion of this course the participant will understand an evidence-based approach to screening for stress urinary incontinence in the orthopedic setting, evaluation and basic treatment methods of the diaphragm, palpation and retraining of the transversus and multifidus and future progression and awareness of appropriate exercise programs within this population. Presenter: Ashley Arango, PT, DPT, CLT-LANA, WCS 8:30 12:00 pm 3.5 CEHs Oh, the places you will go! This session is geared to PT and PTA students who will have decisions to make concerning the direction of their career after graduation. A panel of experts in speciality areas will share their wisdom and stories about how they established themselves in their current roles and how you can as well. Come hear about how you can best align yourself for a career whether you want to pursue a residency program, specialize in geriatrics, pediatrics, women s health, sports or other sections/specialties. There will be time for questions and answers. Come learn and think about your future direction in physical therapy! Presenters: Multiple/Panel of Experts 8:30 12:00 pm 3.5 CEHs APTA Treasure Hunt: Secrets and Gems for Members This 3 hour course is an interactive session, during which participants will access multiple resources on the APTA webpages. Each participant will need their own laptop, tablet computer or ipad. At the completion of this course the participant will be able to: list 10 resources that are useful to their practice; identify resources to stay informed about the Association governance activities; describe the APTA learning center resources; describe the APTA communities; identify one new resource for their professional development; identify the steps needed to volunteer for an APTA workgroup. Presenter: Linda Eargle, PT, DPT, CEEAA, MInEd 1:00 3:00 pm 2 CEHs Who s Pushing Who? Some patients post stroke exhibit a leaning posture and pushing behavior towards the paretic side (contraversive pushing). This session will examine the etiology and clinical manifestations of this disorder and explore current examination tools and intervention strategies. Presenter: Jodi Liphart, PT, DHSc, NCS 1:00 5:00 pm 4.5 CEHs Assessing Falls Across the Continuum of Care This interactive lecture will review outcome measures that assess the essential components for predicting falls across the continuum of care. The intention is to be practical and relevant by taking into consideration the practice setting, available resources, available space, time and the payer source. The information and the interactive structure of this lecture will give therapists the ability to implement these tests easily as well as interpret the data to set realistic, measurable goals. This course is designed for new graduates who desire to enhance their evaluation skills as well as seasoned therapists who are struggling with identifying functional deficits that meet payer guidelines for skilled physical therapy. Presenters: Tara Tobias, MSPT, NCS and Christen Stewart, PT 5
6 6 1:00 5:00 pm 4.5 CEHs Introduction to Physical Therapy in the Oncology Setting The American Cancer Society estimates that approximately 1,600,000 new cancer cases will be diagnosed in 2012 and that 13.7 million people are currently cancer survivors. These numbers strongly suggest that all physical therapists and physical therapist assistants will be asked to treat cancer survivors regardless of their practice setting. Clearly, 4 hours is not enough time to even broadly cover oncology rehabilitation. Therefore the purpose of this brief course is to provide 1) a brief overview of oncology, 2) clinical insight into the treatment of specific solid tumors including breast, lung, prostate and colorectal tumors, 3) clinical insights into the treatment of specific comorbidities that arise from cancer treatments and 4) how to safely and effectively incorporate exercise training into a treatment plan. The ultimate goal is to help the clinician be more comfortable understanding and treating their oncology patients. Presenter: Stephen Morris, PT, PhD, FACSM 3:15 5:15 pm 2 CEHs On the Horizon: Development of an Alternative Payment System for Therapy Services Since adoption of the Balanced Budget Act in 1997, The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has been engaged in reports and projects in an attempt to develop a new payment system for therapy services. These CMS contractor reports have generated significant data and will likely serve as a basis for new models of payment, but have not yet resulted in the implementation of a new payment system that would serve as an alternative to the present procedure-based fee schedule system and arbitrary therapy caps. Recent policy changes, including the multiple procedure payment reductions (MPPR) and continued regulations that inhibit the delivery of cost-effective and efficient physical therapist care, have created not only the opportunity but the necessity to move forward with a reformed payment model for physical therapists. APTA has also been developing a conceptual framework for a new payment system for a number of years. Some of the concepts that would be key to a new payment system for therapy services include having a basis in and promoting the clinical expertise and judgment of the licensed physical therapist, reducing the often oppressive regulatory burdens, and dramatically changing the manner in which services are reported to third parties - specifically moving away from procedural, time-based coding. The desired impact of these and other characteristics of an alternative payment methodology would be the provision of consistent, quality, evidence-based care and the reduction of unwarranted variations in practice. As APTA s advisors to the AMA s CPT Editorial Panel, where the new codes will be developed, and the Relative Value Update Committee (RUC), where the values for the codes that translate into payment are determined, Helene Fearon, PT and Steve Levine, PT, DPT, MSHA, have been involved in the discussions and development of the conceptual model of an alternative payment system since the initiation of these activities. Dr. Levine is the chair of the APTA Board Task Force on Alternative Payment. Join Steve Levine to understand the environment that has necessitated a transition from the current procedural and time-based codes to a more appropriate coding structure, what options are being discussed and developed related to payment for a revised structure, and how a transition to a new payment system will likely impact your practice. Presenter: Steven M. Levine, PT, DPT, MSHA
