2 Intrductin t Hnurs The Hnurs Research Degree at Schl f Sprt Science, Exercise and Health is a prestigius ne-year, research-based extensin f yur undergraduate degree that is available nly t students wh demnstrate academic excellence. During yur Hnurs year, yu will be required t cmplete three units and t spend mst f yur time n yur research wrk and thesis. Irrespective f whether yu are interested in undertaking a career in research, ur Hnurs Research prgramme will allw yu t develp a brad range f generic skills highly valued in the wrkfrce, such as prblem-slving and rganisatinal skills, initiative, advanced cmputer skills and capacity t wrk independently and in a team. In this respect, the Hnurs degree is f great value fr yur career prspects as it distinguishes yu frm regular BSc graduates wh wuld nt have had the same pprtunity fr an advanced learning experience. If yu are interested in pursuing an Hnurs Research Degree, it is imprtant that yu determine the general area that yu wish t study, and discuss ptential research prjects with staff in that area. It is imprtant t stress that yu are nt required t define yur wn research prject as mst Hnurs prjects are nrmally part f the supervisr s nging research. The Schl ffers several research streams: Bimechanics, Mtr Cntrl and Develpment, Exercise Physilgy and Bichemistry, Health Behaviur and Perfrmance Psychlgy, Health and Physical Educatin and Exercise Rehabilitatin/Occupatinal Safety and Health. 5 ASSISTANT PROFESSOR JONAS RUBENSON 1. Calf muscle-tendn dynamics during gait. This prject assesses the frce and wrk in the triceps surae muscle grup (sleus and gastrcnemius muscles) during walking, running and ther mvement tasks. Fcus is n the effect f running technique (bareft, freft, rear-ft) and the effect f ftwear n muscle-tendn dynamics. Techniques include real-time ultrasund imaging, gait analysis and dynammetry. 2. Bimechanics in Chrnic Heart Failure Patients. Chrnic Heart Failure is ne f the majr health burdens facing Australia with apprximately 300,000 peple affected each year. A primary limitatin t exercise capacity in Heart Failure patients is their skeletal muscle functin. This hnurs prject falls under a Natinal Heart Fundatin prject grant aimed at examining the skeletal muscle characteristics and gait characteristics in Chrnic Heart Failure patients. Techniques will include real-time ultrasund imaging, gait analysis and dynammetry. Interactin with cllabratrs in exercise physilgy (Daniel Green) and Ryal Perth Hspital is expected. 3. The effect f tendinpathy n Achilles tendn prperties and gait mechanics. Achilles tendinpathy is ne f the mre cmmn tendinpathies. It is difficult t treat and has the greatest impact in restricting daily activity. Tendinpathy is a majr musculskeletal health prblem in the cmmunity, and treatment utcmes are ften pr. This prject aims t understand the bilgy f Achilles tendinpathy in a rabbit mdel. Techniques can span tendn material testing, in viv tendn frce measurements, electrmygraphy, muscle sarcmere measurements and mdelling. This prject is funded thrugh the Australian Research Cuncil, private industry (Orthcell) and Sir Charles Gairdner Hspital. The purpse f this hnurs investigatin is t determine the relative cntributin f implicit (autmatic) and explicit self-efficacy n peple s inclinatin t participate in such activities. The nn-cnscius activatin f mtivatin: Implicatins fr exercise Many peple emply dissciatin strategies during their exercise by reading magazines r by watching televisin. Can different types f dissciatin (e.g., reading a stry abut smene wh is enjying their wrk / reading a stry abut smebdy wh is bred at wrk) differ in nn-cnsciusly activating mtivatin fr the secndary task (their wn exercise)? Students can chse frm a series f studies in which different frms f dissciatin strategies are cmpared. 8

Kate Bbridge, Athlete Career and Educatin Training Officer, manages the Develping Champins prgram which is a jint initiative between the Department f Sprt and Recreatin (DSR) and WAIS. The prgram targets athletes wh currently train and cmpete in the tier belw elite in their sprts pathways, and wh are aiming t make the transitin int the elite sprting envirnment. The bjective f the prgram is t achieve psitive behaviur change in targeted athletes by develping athletes 1. Interpersnal and persnal life skills and 2. Ability t apply these skills within different cntexts t assist them with transitins, perfrmance and persnal develpment. The prject wuld invlve evaluating the efficacy f the prgram amng its targeted participants, and/r the evaluatin f feedback gained frm a number f surces participants, State Sprting Assciatin representatives and parents f participants. Feedback frm these surces wuld include perceived efficacy f the prgram and apprpriateness f prgram cntent and delivery methds. The ptential scpe f the prject includes: research and invlvement with the implementatin f apprpriate testing methds; data cllectin and analysis and recmmendatins fr future wrk in this area. There are a series f prjects that aim t explre this cncept by attempting t understand the general ppulatins interpretatin f mderate intensity activity, whether this differs depending n current exercise level and whether yu can train individuals t walk at mderate intensity physical activity. Sitting and Standing as risk factrs fr Health Recent discussin arund physical activity guidelines have started t fcus n standing, with sme researchers suggesting that length f time standing may be an independent risk factr fr ill health. Presently, there is little knwledge abut the actual amunt f time wrkers spend standing during the wrk day. This research area will explre cncepts surrunding this issues as well as the difference in energy cst between sitting and standing.
