Interpersonal October 15-18, 2013 Charlotte, NC
Interpersonal INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS Developing/Maintaining mutually satisfying relationships characterized by trust and compassion Talk TO your audience, not AT them 31 Image URL:
Interpersonal INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS Developing/Maintaining mutually satisfying relationships characterized by trust and compassion Connecting with your audience means you actually look at them and talk to them. When you have slides that have huge sections of text that you read to them, you make both you and your audience un-necessary. I mean, if you put your whole presentation into text on your slides, why does anyone, including you, need to be in the room? Add to that the fact that most people don t like to go to conferences to have someone read to them. It is one thing when a novelist or poet is reading from their work in a bookstore or something, but at a conference it is just not a good idea. Long structures of text are for blog posts and technical articles and stuff like that. So, try to keep the text of your slides short. Your slide deck should COMPLEMENT your presentation, not BE your presentation. For real. Oh, and I just want to say that Firefly was a totally awesome show and the fact that it lasted only one season was a total tragedy. Where was I? Oh, right. Stop reading. 32
Interpersonal INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS Developing/Maintaining mutually satisfying relationships characterized by trust and compassion Be honest about what you know/don t know. 33 Image URL:
Interpersonal EMPATHY Recognizing, understanding, and appreciating how other people feel Being able to articulate another person s perspective respectfully Welcome to Fantasy Island! 34 Image URL:
