2 Medical Terminology You may fear learning medical terminology thinking of it as a whole new language. Actually it is just a combination of terms many of which you are familiar with. Each student needs to pull out a piece of paper and make a list of every medical term they are familiar with. We are not worried about spelling at this point just medical words you have heard used.

4 Medical Terminology Medical terms are built from four word parts that consist of the following components: Root - the fundamental part of the word that contains the basic meaning and usually indicate the part of the body that is involved Example- The root word cardi means heart

5 Prefix - word parts that are added to the beginning of the word or root to modify the meaning and usually indicate location, time, number, or status Example- The prefix pre when added to natal mean before birth

6 Suffix - word parts that are added to the end of the word or root to modify the meaning and usually indicate the procedure, condition, disorder or disease Example- The suffix ectomy when added to append (means appendix) is the surgical removal of the appendix Appendectomy

7 Combining vowel- usually an o is used to aid in the pronunciation to connect two word roots or to connect a root word with a suffix when suffix doesn t start with a vowel. Example- electrocardiogram
