16 Tips for Succession Planning and Transitions in Leadership

17 Timing Earlier selection of new leaders allows for smoother transitions Provides opportunities for mentorship, shared resources Allows new leadership team to start working together Consider adjusting selection/election schedule for 2015

18 Elections Consider who your stakeholders are. Check for nominations and volunteers Representation from interdisciplinary groups (if applicable to your chapter) This is also a great opportunity to reach out to other schools and/or groups to increase the interprofessionalism and diversity of your Chapter.

19 Shadowing A benefit to identifying new leaders early on? The leadership team doesn t have to transition immediately following elections. Consider jointly running a Chapter meeting at the end of the year. Allows for questions, experience planning/executing events You don t necessarily want to re-invent the wheel. Allows for introduction to Chapter members and build excitement for the upcoming year.

20 Future Planning Leadership transitions are an excellent opportunity to make changes in your Chapter Do you have any goals for the next year? Challenges to address in reflecting on the current year? New groups to involve? Ways to rebuild interest and maintain momentum among members?

21 Communication Share your contacts and resources Develop working relationships with Faculty Advisors Establish connections with your school, university, hospital officials, etc.

22 Lessons Learned Each new Chapter Leader can benefit from a short description of their position. Be specific! Include details regarding specific behind the scenes tasks such as: Booking rooms for meetings Inviting speakers Developing and maintaining improvement projects Chapter communication Reporting to the IHI Open School team Other aspects specific to your own Chapter activities

25 IHI Open School Mount Sinai Chapter Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai: 600+ medical students, dozens of student groups, but none were patient safety or quality-related until Fall Jen Kolb (MS4) started the IHI Open School Chapter at Sinai Funding from Student Council Initial recruitment at activities fair, blasts Movie nights, case presentations, career panels Promoting Open School

26 Hand washing Hygiene Event Two-day event held during National Patient Safety Week Coordinated with hospital Infection Control Department Glo Germ used to asses hand hygiene; popcorn provided as an incentive Fun and interactive way to attract new students to the organization by manning the table or testing their hand washing skills

Quick cycle for medical students: get involved in the fall of 1 st year, determine leadership in the spring, transitioning in early spring of 2 nd year Turnover of faculty mentors Funding for larger events/projects involving more of the hospital

39 Depression and Healthcare Per Capita Cost Left untreated, depression is as costly as heart disease or AIDS to the US economy, costing over $51 billion in absenteeism from work and lost productivity and $26 billion in direct treatment costs.
