Swanson, Pharm.D., BCGP College of Pharmacy University of Oklahoma College of Pharmacy Commission for Certification in Geriatric Pharmacy CCGP Overview 2016 Thanks to Tom Clark, prior Executive Director of CCGP now serving as Senior Director for Geriatric Certification at BPS CERTIFIED GERIATRIC PHARMACIST CREDENTIAL MOVES TO BOARD OF PHARMACY SPECIALTIES As of January 1, 2017, the Commission for Certification in Geriatric Pharmacy (CCGP) has moved the Certified Geriatric Pharmacist (CGP) credential under the BPS portfolio of pharmacist certifications. In this move the Commission for Certification in Geriatric Pharmacy (CCGP) ceased operations on December 31, CCGP staff members have joined the BPS staff in the following roles: Thomas R. Calendar year 2017 will be a year of transition, with the CGP examination being offered during the four examination windows used by CCGP and AMP/PSI test company and test centers continuing to be used through the end of The goal is to have the geriatric examination fully integrated into the Board of Pharmacy Specialties by the beginning of ( )

4 CURRENT STATUS OF CCGP The Commission for Certification in Geriatric Pharmacy dissolved at the end of December 2016 and transferred the Certified Geriatric Pharmacist credential to the portfolio of pharmacist certifications of the Board of Pharmacy Specialties. Some details remain to be resolved regarding the transition. As information becomes available, this Frequently Asked Questions document will be updated to provide the most current news. TRANSITION PLANS FOR CGP EXAMINATION CCGP operations continued as usual through the end of The year of 2017 will be a transition year with the CGP examination still being administered through test centers of AMP/PSI, the company used by CCGP. Four test windows will still be available in 2017 for administration of the CGP examination. The geriatric examination will continue to be the 150-item examination used by CCGP through the end of TRANSITION PLANS FOR CGP EXAMINATION By 2018, the geriatric examination should be fully integrated into the BPS structure. The geriatric examination will be administered under the BPS structure with the BPS test company, using the two test windows (Spring and Fall) in which BPS examinations are administered. The geriatric examination will be 175 items, with four-option multiple-choice format. The role delineation study (job analysis) for the geriatric examination will be conducted in 2017, so the 2018 examination will have a new content outline derived from the 2017 job analysis. By 2018, the Geriatric Specialty Council will be appointed. EXPECTED CHANGES FROM OLD TO NEW EXAM FORMAT Old Exam Four testing windows 150 Exam items Three-option MC format Reflects 2012 job analysis Last Exam Window October November 2017 (Application deadline September 15, 2017) New Exam 2018 Two testing windows Spring and Fall 175 Exam items Four-option MC format Reflects 2017 job analysis ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR GERIATRIC CERTIFICATION ADJUSTED On July 12, 2017, the Board of Directors of the Board of Pharmacy Specialties voted to adjust the eligibility criteria for Board certification in geriatric pharmacy practice. The change will bring the geriatric criteria in alignment with eligibility criteria for other BPS certification programs. While the number of years of practice experience required remains the same at two years, BPS will require that the two years of experience include at least 50% of time spent in geriatric pharmacy activities as defined by the Geriatric Pharmacy Content Outline. July 13, 2017 (updated) TRANSITION PLANS FOR CGP CREDENTIALING Pharmacists who become certified in in 2017 will not pay the Certification Administration Fee in Instead, this fee will be billed on an annual basis beginning in May 2018 according to the normal schedule used by the Board of Pharmacy Specialties. The certificates issued to pharmacists who become certified in 2017 will come from the Board of Pharmacy Specialties and will have a seven-year certification cycle. The expiration date will be December 31, 2024 for all pharmacists certified in 2017, regardless of which test window is used for taking the geriatric examination. Board of Pharmacy Specialties. 5 TRANSITION FOR CGP CREDENTIALING The Certified Geriatric Pharmacist (CGP) credential became the Board Certified Geriatric Pharmacist (BCGP) credential on January 1, Effective immediately, Certified Geriatric Pharmacists can begin to use the BCGP designation. Either designation (CGP or BCGP) can be used until January 1, 2018 as supplies of business cards, etc. are consumed. UPDATE ON CERTIFICATION EXPIRATION DATES FROM BPS BPS gives an expiration date of December 31 for all certificates, so the geriatric certificates issued by BPS to all certified pharmacists in 2018 will have an expiration date of December 31. This means, for example, that a Certified Geriatric Pharmacist with an expiration date of May 31, 2019 will receive a new certificate from BPS in early 2018 with an expiration date of December 31, Most geriatric pharmacists will receive a few extra months of additional certification in order to accommodate the alignment of the certificate expiration dates.
