3 Cause slowing of the operations of the brain. Initially effect the portion of the brain that controls a persons conscious, voluntary actions. With increased doses they will began to affect parts of the brain that control the body s autonomic processes (i.e. heartbeat and respiration). In general, someone under the influence of a CNS Depressant, to the point of impairment, will act and appear as though they were intoxicated.

8 Stimulants will cause the brain and central nervous system to speed up. The speeding up is a result of increased heart rate, respiratory rate and elevation in blood pressure. This can lead to physical harm to the abuser. Other effects include irritability, nervousness and inability to concentrate.

20 Used for pain relief in the medical field. Three common characteristics shared by narcotic analgesics; relieve pain, produce withdrawal signs and symptoms after use, their use will suppress the withdrawal signs and symptoms of chronic morphine use. Two types: Opium Derivatives and Synthetic Opiates. Alkaloids are found in one substance and can be isolated from it. Derivatives are made by chemically treating natural alkaloids. Opium Derivatives include Codeine, Morphine, Thebaine (naturally occurring) and Heroin (chemically treating derivative). Synthetic opiates are artificially produced and are not derived from Opium at all, yet they have similar or identical effects. Synthetic Opiates include Methadone, Demerol and Fentanyl.

25 Active ingredient is delta-nine tetrahydrocannabino (THC). THC is primarily found in the leaves and flowers of the plant. There are several forms of cannabis. They include Marijuana, Hashish, Hashish Oil, Marinol and Nabilone. Marijuana consists of the dried leaves and buds of the plant Hashish is produced by crushing and boiling the leaves of the female plant, allowing them to dry in a semi-solid mass Hashish Oil is the liquid extracted from the Hashish Marinol (Dronabinol) and Nabilone are synthetic forms of THC. Marinol is used for nausea and Nabilone is an anti-vomiting agent.

32 Drugs that cause hallucinations. A hallucination is a sensory experience of something that does not exist outside of the mind. It can involve sounds, sights, smells, tastes and feelings of things that are not really there. It also can involve distorted or altered sensory perceptions. Pseudo-hallucinations often occur when this happens. Synesthesia is another common type of hallucination. This is a transposing of sensory modes. A person might hear colors and see sounds. Abusers of hallucinogens have been driven into permanent insanity due to bad trips.

Volatile Solvents include plastic cement, gasoline, paint and fingernail polish remover. The active ingredient in most is Toluene. Aerosols abused include the propellants found in hair sprays, freon and vegetable frying pan lubricant. They contain various hydrocarbon gasses which produce the drug like effect Anesthetic Gases abolish pain and are normally used in medical surgeries. They include Ether, Chloroform and Nitrous Oxide.

41 Inhibit pain by cutting off, or dissociating, the brain s perception of pain. PCP and Ketamine are examples of this category.

42 First developed in the 50 s as an I.V. anesthetic, its use on humans was discontinued due to its undesirable side effects. Currently it is used in the veterinary field under the trade name Sernylan. PCP has over 100 analogs, one of which is Ketamine. This makes it difficult to detect in blood and urine lab analysis. PCP is a disassociative anesthetic, to a peace officer this means pain compliance is of little use.
