1 Fall 2017 Volume 8, Issue 4 Swelling with Emotion Lymphedema Association of Manitoba President s message Winnipeg is enjoying a beautiful summer evening as I write this message, however, I anticipate fall will be well entrenched when this issue is shared with you. It will be published around the time of the National Lymphedema Conference an exciting event that will be hosted in Montreal this October. LAM has been extraordinarily busy since the spring. We have been getting the word out by staffing many displays. We were an activity sponsor at a large charity golf tournament, made a presentation at a Winnipeg Regional Health Authority-hosted workshop on lymphedema, had displays in several hospitals, an event in Brandon, and at a large wound care conference at the St. Boniface Hospital. Take a look at some photos from these events in this insert. No complaints! This is exactly the type of exposure we need at LAM to bring lymphedema into the forefront. The Board has also planned a couple of fundraisers. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers offered us an opportunity to participate as a community partner whereby, for each Bomber ticket we sold to the game on July 27, we retained a portion of the proceeds. This was a new venture for us, but as you can see from the summary, our loud group, way up in section 237, had a great time. LAM is also in the early planning stages of Pasta & a Pint fundraiser. It will be our largest fundraiser this year and is paired with our Annual General Meeting. The best news about this event: those of you who are members, and come to the AGM, will get a 50% discount on the ticket price! More details will be shared in the coming weeks. 2 Page 2 Swelling with Emotion Pink Ribbon Golf Classic for Hope July 12, 2017 Bridges Golf Course, Starbuck MB Claire Ann and I, on behalf of the Lymphedema Association of Manitoba, had the pleasure of setting up a display to create awareness of lymphedema to all the golfers who took part in this event. Although it was a fundraiser for Breast Cancer of Hope, it always amazes me to see how little people know about lymphedema. We distributed pamphlets and informed the guests of our Association. Claire Ann Deighton-Lamy and Isabelle Thorvardson I was joined by Cherida Olson for the afternoon. It was a chance to meet another member who suffers from lymphedema, primary in her case. There are always people who know someone who is affected by lymphedema and so the day goes by very quickly as we continue to create awareness. What a beautiful course and wonderful place! 3 Page 3 Volume 8, Issue 4 Winnipeg Blue Bomber Game Fundraiser July 27, 2017 The first ever Winnipeg Blue Bomber game/ fundraiser is in the books and what an amazing night it was. The weather cooperated, and it was a beautiful Manitoba summer night. We came within a few tickets of selling out our entire block of seats and a great time was had by all who attended. Tara Baxter and her family Thank you to everyone who purchased a ticket to support the Bombers and support our Association at the same time. A special thank you to LAM member, Lymphedema Depot, who purchased nine tickets and raffled them off to some lucky winners. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers provided the drama by scoring two touchdowns in the last minute of the game to beat the Montreal Alouettes with a final score of 41 to 40. The winning touchdown was scored on the last play of the game in front of 25,000 screaming fans. Thank you to the Bombers for offering us $7.50 per ticket as a fundraiser and for putting on such a great show. Let s do it again next year! 4 Page 4 Swelling with Emotion A Comprehensive Approach to Lymphedema / Chronic Edema Riverview Health Centre, Winnipeg, MB On May 16 and 17, the WRHA hosted the Advanced Practice Symposium: A Comprehensive Approach to Lymphedema and Chronic Edema. This event was held at the Riverview Health Center, and the Lymphedema Association of Manitoba was invited to be part of this learning experience. LAM was well represented, with contributions by LAM President Susan Stratford, Board Members Claire Ann Deighton-Lamy, Dave Van Hellemond, and PAC member Edith Mulhall. Jane McSwiggan, Education Research Co-ordinator for the WRHA, and Martina Reddick, sponsored by 3M, opened the program, stating how important it is for various disciplines and health perspectives to work together for the improvement of lymphedema services for patients across Canada. Edith Mulhall explained the anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system, discussed the different responses to various methods of treatment, and how unmanaged lymphedema can affect wound healing. Bev Lanning, a lymphedema nurse in Newfoundland, shared a very touching account of dealing with her son s primary lymphedema. Her passion touched each of us, and put a human face to living with lymphedema. Dave Van Hellemond, LAM board member and product consultant for BSN Jobst, shared the benefits of various types of wrapping products and garments, emphasizing the importance of choosing the right arment for each specific person. Practical sessions with Martina Reddick were spaced between speaker presentations, and provided guidance for delegates in proper use of Coban and Coban Lite. LAM President Susan Stratford opened Day 2, providing an excellent picture of what LAM does in our province, and how LAM has been a forerunner in public education, awareness and support for patients living with lymphedema.

5 Volume 8, Issue 4 Page 5 It was clear that we have covered a great distance in the five years of operation, but also, that there is still a great amount of work to be done in order to accomplish our goal of adequate services being available to people with lymphedema in Manitoba. Tania D Amato highlighted the features of the Breast Health Center and KatherineStyrchak, therapist, discussed the services offered by Breast Health Center, for people with breast cancer. Claire Ann Deighton-Lamy presented a detailed explanation of the need for proper fitting with custom garments in order to achieve optimum management of lymphedema. The day closed with two patients, Rick and Bonnie, sharing their respective journeys in living with lymphedema. Their sharing was particularly powerful, leaving a strong impact on the delegates. LAM members were also visible at three information tables: Susan Stratford presided over the LAM display, answering questions about our association, sharing brochures and issues of Pathways, and selling our beautiful Journey necklace. Dave Van Hellemond displayed various compression wraps and supportive products and information at a table sponsored by BSN Jobst. ClaireAnn Deighton-Lamy provided education about various types of custom and non-custom garments available at Diamond Athletic Supplies. This two-day event was filled with learning and excellent networking, and attendees left feeling that a considerable progress had been made in the lymphedema effort. Edith Mulhall, RN, RMT, CLT-LANA

6 Page 6 Swelling with Emotion Congratulations Wendy Leroux! The is very proud to welcome its second therapist, certified by the Lymphology Association of North America. Wendy Leroux of Winnipeg successfully completed her LANA certification and is now one of only 20 lymphedema therapists in Canada who carries this designation. Wendy serves on the Continuing Competency Committee of the Massage Therapy Association of Manitoba, the Education Working Group of the Canadian Lymphedema Framework, and LAM is very happy to have her expert input as a member of the Professional Advisory Committee for our provincial association. This is a very challenging examination and provides the bearer with international recognition of having achieved the high standards of education required by LANA.
