1 PSYCHOLOGY Schizophrenia Sort Resources for Courses Overview The aim of this activity is for students to consolidate their knowledge of biological and psychological explanations of schizophrenia and provide a structure for an essay which can be completed in class, or as part of a homework task. Resources Required Schizophrenia Sorting Cards Essay Plan (Optional) Teacher Instructions Teaching and Learning Strategy Provide your students with a set of schizophrenia sorting cards (see below). These cards should be photocopied in colour, as each colour relates to a different aspect of the task, and cut up before the lesson: Blue Cards Explanation Pink Cards Evaluation Please Note: Blank cards have been provided as you may wish to amend the studies suggested/ evaluation points to suit your own preferences.

2 Schizophrenia Sort Resources for Courses Students should then: 1 Sort the explanations (blue cards) into either biological or psychological. 2 Match each evaluation point (pink cards) to an explanation. Once the students have sorted their cards you should provide feedback to the whole class, ensuring that the students have sorted the explanations and evaluation correctly. Finally, students should prepare an essay plan for the following question Outline and evaluate one or more psychological explanations for schizophrenia. (16 marks) using the information sorted as a framework. You may wish to provide students with an essay writing frame to help them even further (see essay plan below). Stretch & Challenge The blank cards can be used as a stretch & challenge exercise where students add their own evaluation points, or even provide a counter-argument to an existing evaluation point.

(Both parents = about 50%) Dopamine hypothesis abnormally high number or D2 receptors are abnormally sensitive to dopamine. Enlarged ventricles Frontal lobe/temporal lobes/ amygdala etc early stress/ injury/foetal development Viral infection maternal flu/respiratory infection in 2nd trimester Operant conditioning/ reinforcement Delusions can be explained by the failure of others to share the hallucination Poor selective attention unable to filter sensory information Life events Childhood stress parenting/bullying
