10 VELA Facility Capital Investment Development and testing of novel and compact accelerator technologies. Partnership with industry and the scientific community. Applications in medicine, health, security, energy, industrial processing and science. Potential to revolutionise the cost, compactness and efficiency of such systems. High performance and flexible electron beam injector facility feeding customised state-of-the-art testing enclosures and associated support infrastructure. 12 FEL Activities ASTeC, ALICE IR FEL (5.5 to 11mm) commissioned in 2010, now exploited by User Consortium to advance the understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of cervical, oesophageal, and prostate cancer. Proposal for EPSRC Mid-Range facility in progress SwissFEL ASTeC makes direct contributions to SwissFEL on various topics including a collimation system to protect the FEL undulators, a self-seeding scheme for the hard X-ray FEL, design and fabrication of the modulator undulator for the laser heater system, 2 colour FEL modelling, mode locked FEL modelling, and X-band RF cavity design. Plan commissioning contribution. low rep rate. L-FEL ASTeC have been contracted by a global blue chip company to contribute to the feasibility report for L-FEL, a proposed industrial Energy Recovery Linac-based FEL for use in a multibillion pound global sector Future UK XFEL A new science case is starting to emerge harder X-ray

13 FEL R&D Goals The accelerator and FEL community has generated a number of FEL R&D goals Gun development RF Issues Electron Beam Transport Simulation and Optimization FEL Output Simulation and Optimization Electron & Photon Diagnostics Synchronisation ASTeC is contributing in all areas and is nationally leading in most areas through CLARA and other FEL activities 70% of ASTeC staff effort is directed to FEL research and electron beam test facility operation and development
