SPEAKERS Prof Dr. Birte Melsen received her dental degree in 1964 and became a certified orthodontist in 1971.

From 1986, she has been working part-time in private practice in Lübeck, Germany (Adult Orthodontics only). In 2000, she received the Knighthood of Dannebrog 1st degree.

2 SPEAKERS Prof Dr. Birte Melsen received her dental degree in 1964 and became a certified orthodontist in In 1974, she finished her odontological doctorate and from 1975 to 2012, she has been Professor and Head at the Department of Orthodontics, School of Dentistry, Aarhus University, Denmark. From 1986, she has been working part-time in private practice in Lübeck, Germany (Adult Orthodontics only). In 2000, she received the Knighthood of Dannebrog 1st degree. Professor Melsen has authored more than 350 publications in the fields of growth and development studied on human autopsy material, bone biology and clinical studies by means of the implant method. She is the Honorary Member of many Orthodontic Societies and has received numerous awards and honorary degrees within and outside Europe. During the last years, her special interest is in the fields of skeletal anchorage, virtual imaging and adult orthodontics. Dr. Turi Bassarelli is a graduate of the University of Aarhus (DK) orthodontic program, he received his MSC in Orthodontics in 2000 and he has maintained a private practice in Prato (Italy) since He has worked as Clinical Assistant Professor at the Dept. of Orthodontics of the University of Aarhus from 2000 to 2002, Visiting Professor at the Dept. of Orthodontics of the University of Siena from 2009 to 2012 and Honorary Lecturer at the Dept. of Orthodontics of the University of HK (China) from 2012 to He is currently Visiting Professor at the Dept. of Periodontics of UCL (London, UK). He is an Active Member of the Angle Society (EHA- SO), the Italian Society of Orthodontics (S.I.D.O) and Italian Society of Biomechanics and Segmented Orthodontics (S.I.B.O.S) of wich he has been president from

IDENTIFICATION AND TREATMENT APPROACHES Despite the general assumption that some cases are harder to treat than others, it is often very difficult to ascertain which cases will be easy and which will be difficult. The terms complexity, difficulty and severity are synonyms often used to describe a case but have clearly different aspects which must be taken into account when treatment planning. There are cases which at first glance may appear easy but would actually be classified as complicated. Unfortunately, there are few studies which shed light on this problem. There are known features within orthodontic diagnostics which have been recognized as helping to distinguish between complex and easy cases. The challenge for the orthodontist, however, is greater as the number of such indicators available to him increases. In this course we will give a better understanding of the differences which constitute a difficult or severe case, and present different types of malocclusion and their related treatment.
