Total Organic Carbon (TOC) & Total Inorganic Carbon (TIC) Standards Total Organic Carbon (TOC) detection is an important measurement because of the effect carbon-based chemicals may have on the environment, human health, and manufacturing processes. TOC is a highly sensitive, non-specific measurement of all organics present in a sample. For example, it can be used to regulate organic chemical discharge to the environment at a manufacturing plant. In addition, low TOC can confirm the absence of potentially harmful organic chemicals in water used to manufacture pharmaceutical products. TOC is also of interest in the field of potable water purification due to disinfection by-products. Biodiesel Fuel Calibration Standards Biodiesel is a domestically produced, renewable fuel that can be manufactured from vegetable oils, animal fats, or recycled restaurant greases. Biodiesel is safe, biodegradable, and reduces serious air toxins and pollutants such as particulates, carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons. Blends of biodiesel with petroleum diesel can range from 5% biodiesel (B5) up to 100% biodiesel (B100). ASTM International s published method, ASTM D , outlines specifications for biodiesel (B100) grades S15 and S500 for use as a blend component with diesel fuel oils. The European Committee for Standardisation (CEN) has introduced the specification EN14105:2003 which specifies properties and test methods for biodiesel grades. Both ASTM D-6751 and EN14105:2003 specify the use of ASTM Method D-6584 for glycerin determination and ASTM Method D-5453 for total sulfur determination. ASTM Method D-6584 This test method covers the quantitative determination of free and total glycerin in B-100 methyl esters by gas chromatography. The range of detection for free glycerin is to 0.05 mass %, and total glycerin from 0.05 to 0.5 mass %. This procedure is not applicable to vegetable oil methyl esters obtained from lauric oils, such as coconut oil and palm kernel oil. 6 O R G A N I C S NEW! Dutch Seven & WHO PCB Mixes Numerous scientific studies from around the world have proven the adverse effects that PCBs have on human health. One study, the Dutch PCB/Dioxin Study began in 1989 and measured the effects of PCBs on the growth and development of children. From that study came the DUTCH Seven, a list of PCB congeners that were found to be most prevalent in the study subjects, and were also found to be the most toxic. The World Health Organisation (WHO) and other global monitoring bodies continue to study the effects of PCBs on animals and humans, to identify toxic PCB levels in the environment, and to facilitate and effect the clean-up of contaminated sites.
