3 WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF EMMANUEL S GROWTH GROUPS MINISTRY? What draws people to be friends is that they see the same truth. They share it. C.S. Lewis Growth Groups offer all members and guests opportunities to grow in friendship by sharing the Truth of Jesus Christ in more casual settings. These Groups foster a sense of belonging, growth in the one True Faith, and a continued desire to be a part of God s family. HOW ARE GROWTH GROUPS DIFFERENT FROM TRADITIONAL SMALL GROUPS? Growth Group sessions last only three months rather than having no end date. The main purpose is to meet new people and friends rather than forming intimate relationships. Growth Groups are open to everyone rather than by invitation. Growth Groups will include many different types of interests in addition to the traditional Bible study usually associated with small groups. WHAT TYPES OF GROWTH GROUPS WILL BE OFFERED? Study Groups Topics of our faith will be studied: The Bible, books, movies, etc. Topics will be reviewed for consistency with Lutheran beliefs prior to initiating the study. Service Groups (Building Faith in the City) This could be a neighborhood or community project, serving at Bethesda, Lutheran Military Veterans and Families Ministries, or helping with maintenance of outside church grounds. There are many ways to serve our neighbors. Social Groups Coffee and dessert, breakfast or dinner out after church, taking turns at members homes for food & fellowship, a walking group, a bowling group, a game group, a children s play group The possibilities are almost endless. WHAT ARE THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF A GROWTH GROUP MEMBER? Commit to attend your Growth Group once a week or every other week as appropriate for the group One social or service event will be incorporated into the three month schedule Pray daily for your fellow Growth Group members

4 Facilitator Name(s): Sarah Martin MONDAY MORNING MOTIVATION The Monday Morning Motivation Growth Group is an informal, women's study group that will use a devotion to start the week in God's Word and Christian Fellowship. 5 LIFE TOGETHER Facilitator Name(s): Thomas Eggold This Growth Group will be a guided discussion of Dietrich Bonhoeffer s classic, Life Together. Written by Bonheoffer during the rise of the Nazi regime, Life Together explores Christian community in a practical and challenging exploration of what life together in the body of Christ really means. Life Together is available at most book stores or can be purchased online. Address where Growth Group will meet: Emmanuel Lutheran Church Weekly Tuesday 5:30-7:00 pm Which day will the group meet? 6 MEN OF IRON Facilitator Name(s): Professor Wellness and Fitness Center (Charlie Chapman) The Men of Iron Growth Group is a group that will provide training for both your physical and spiritual health. A Bible Study will be followed by a weight lifting session. Address where Growth Group will meet: Auburn Park Drive, Area where this is located: North 2x per month Which day will the group meet? 8 OUR HEALING KITCHEN Facilitator Name(s) Sonya Egglod Description of Growth Group This summer we are once again participating in a program called Our HEALing Kitchen. Sponsored by Parkview Health and St. Joseph Community Health Foundation, Our HEALing Kitchen is a class aimed at helping people learn new, fun, and affordable ways to integrate healthy foods into their daily diets. Using a "garden-to-kitchen" curriculum Our HEALing Kitchen provides knowledge and skill-building to increase fruit and vegetable selection, preparation, and consumption. This curriculum places emphasis on locally grown food and the benefits of eating a diet that is rich in fresh fruits and vegetables and low in saturated fats, sugars, and processed foods. 9 DANCING WITH PASTOR Facilitator Name(s): Pastor and Sonya Eggold Pastor Thomas and Sonya invite you to join them in a Beginner Ballroom Dancing class offered by the Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Department. Learning to dance with a partner is fun, challenging and good exercise for the mind and body. Classes will focus on the Swing, Foxtrot, Waltz, Polka and American Tango and will give you a solid base for social dancing. You must register with a partner. Instructor Tiffany Neuls has been teaching dance at the Community Center for many years. Registration deadline: September 17.
