1 Dear Hornet Nation, October 26, 2018 HS Hornet Happenings Newsletter Our Fine Arts Department presents the Fall musical Chicago the Musical, High School Edition, on Thursday thru Sunday, November 1st, 2nd, and 3rd at 7:00 pm and Sunday, November 4th at 2:00 pm. The October Monthly Principal Video, click HERE, features the cast, crew, orchestra and me on the rehearsal set of Chicago. The PSAT/NMSQT Testing for juniors was on Wednesday and we appreciate the respect and cooperation from our non-juniors while their peers were testing. On Friday, October 19th, the Hinsdale South and Hinsdale Central football game was not about winning or losing, it was about celebrating our collective pride in D86. Our pictures below tell the entire story! We wish our football team the best of luck in the first round playoff game tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. Prairie Ridge High School in Crystal Lake. Have a great weekend! Sincerely, Arwen Pokorny Lyp Principal #SouthPride From the left: Central Principal, William Walsh, South Principal Arwen Pokorny Lyp and Superintendent Dr. Law attended the football game as one unified team. History was made when our band performed together for the first time! Parent's Corner LEARN ABOUT THE INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECT ON THE REFERENDUM
2 Outdated boilers. Undersized generators. Obsolete electrical equipment. These are just a few examples of major infrastructure issues at Hinsdale South and Hinsdale Central. District 86 Director of Operations Jessica Orama describes the consequences if infrastructure enhancements aren t made. Learn more about Infrastructure Projects by watching the video by clicking the picture on the right. DID YOU KNOW D86 FACILITIES ARE NOT ADA ACCESSIBLE TO PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES? LEARN WHY ACCESSIBILITY IS A KEY PIECE OF THE NOVEMBER 6 REFERENDUM Accessible hallways, sidewalks, entrances and bathrooms are vital to maintaining our schools inclusivity of people with disabilities. Our recent video highlights how ADA compliant facilities would better serve our students, faculty and staff. NOVEMBER 2018 REFERENDUM At the August 6 Committee of the Whole meeting, the Board voted to approve the resolution as presented to place on the November 6, 2018 ballot a proposition for school building bonds in the amount of $166,426,514. Before the vote on the proposition for school building bonds, representative Bob Lewis from the
3 District s municipal advisor PMA discussed with the Board the bond issuance for the proposed amount and the estimated tax impact from it. In the financing scenario the Board indicated that it preferred, the tax impact for a home with a fair market value of $500,000 is estimated to be $301 per year if the Board sold bonds as they were needed for construction. For reference, the median home value in District 86 is $461,200. A tax calculator is on this website for people to more precisely determine their individual estimated tax impact. Hover over the November 2018 Referendum tab to find it. Sample renderings can be found on the "Sample Renderings" tab on the left. These sample renderings from the District s architect ARCON depict what the spaces could look like after renovation. Underneath the sample renderings are photos of the spaces in their current state. So far, the renderings that have been completed are as follows: the Hinsdale South library, a new Hinsdale Central fine arts entrance, pre-engineering spaces for both schools as well as the current ADA circulation at Hinsdale Central. More renderings will be added after they are completed. On August 6, the Board also gave Administration direction to proceed with the referendum education campaign. The show is a juried exhibition open to all currently enrolled high school students from 12 Midwestern states. It was an incredibly competitive exhibition this year, wrote Drury Professor Rebecca Miller. We had to make some tough decisions to narrow down the 116 entries to a show of 31 pieces. Of the 31 pieces being exhibited, seven of the pieces are from 5 Hinsdale South photo students and their work will be on display. They are: Nick Angus Sarah Smid Nathan Roth Sara Cleghorn Shaylinn Aver Sara Cleghorn and Shaylin Aver each have two pieces that were accepted. The show is at the Pool Art Center Gallery at Drury University in Springfield Missouri from November 2 through November 30. #SouthPride WE ARE PROUD OF OUR GLOBAL HUMANITARIAN CLUB The Hinsdale South Global Humanitarian Club met with the Rotary Club of Darien for their co-meeting on Thursday, October 25th. Each week she continues to be our kill leader for the team. Kaitlyn also made the all-tournament team at the Plainfield Central Harvest Festival tournament. She is a great athlete and great teammate. Great job Kaitlyn! Congratulations on a great week!
10 Congratulations Julian Watson Boys' Cross Country Congratulations to our Athlete of the Week, Julian Watson. Julian continued his great season by winning the individual championship at the Hinsdale South Regional on Saturday, his 2nd victory of the year. His finish led the Hornets to their 2nd straight Regional championship, and 4th in the last 5 years. The previous week he was named All-Conference, placing 12th in the Conference meet. Despite only being a sophomore, Julian has been a leader on and off the course, and is a main reason why the team has been successful this season. He will continue to lead the team through the Sectional and State meets in the upcoming weeks. Great job Julian! Congratulations on a great week!
