She has enjoyed performing with professional orchestras and teaching violin and viola since She currently plays principal viola with the Champaign- Urbana Symphony and The Prairie Ensemble. Robin also instigated the puppet theatre at the Discovery Center Children's Museum in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. 5 Page 5 of 7 This is going to be a huge project with both hands on work and $7,500 donated by the club. There are request for approx. 80 trees to be planted in the rural areas around Gifford and another 190 in residential Gifford plus another 50 for the Village of Gifford. Some trees may not be able to be planted this spring and will be delayed til fall or next spring. By next spring there will be many more people ready for trees so this may be a big project for next year also. More info to come soon as the committee is working out details and will report progress as we have it. CLUB GOAL: RAISE $3,000 IN MARCH FOR POLIO PLUS Posted by Stanley Herrin on Feb 27, 2014 March is PolioPlus Month and the Rotary Club of Champaign has a goal to raise $3,000 for Polio Plus! Your help is needed to reach this goal! During March, please make your check out to Rotary Foundation with Polio in the memo line. Please give your check to Ken Gunji, Ken Buel, Connie Walsh. Poliomyelitis or polio is a acute viral infectious disease. It is spread through crowding, unclean conditions, and improper sanitation of waste fluids. During the early 20th century, polio devastated many populations around the world; thanks to vaccines developed in the middle of the century, polio is rare in first world countries. Unfortunately, lack of thorough vaccination in developing nations makes polio a recurring problem in these areas of the world. The infection is caused by the poliovirus, a virus which attacks the digestive tract in human beings. There are three classes of polio; the most mild, type three, represents the bulk of polio infections. The patient may experience a general feeling of malaise and flu-like symptoms, but he or she may not even realize that these symptoms are the result of a polio infection. In more severe cases, polio gets into the bloodstream and starts to rapidly multiply, causing more serious health problems. Running the Illinois Marathon? Just reminder...please let Abbie Osterbur know if you are interested in running the Illinois Marathon on April 26. The club was given two entrance fee waivers for sponsoring a mile of the race. Please get back to Abbie by March 15. The names will be drawn out of a hat and two lucky Rotarians will run the race for free!

Snippets from the Past Oct 11, 76: 20 WGRCers [representing 9,900 miles to be covered in a year s time] are enjoying fun and fund-raising in the Run for Rotary project. The heroes by distance [among others] include Jim Acheson, and Terry O Neill, 1000 miles; Dave Downey, 500 miles; Pete Tomaras, 200 miles. Tomaras is the money favorite with backing of $1.10 from 11 sponsors for each mile; then comes O Neill with 85 cents per mile, and Acheson at 50 cents a mile. The Cup for March - PolioPlus Posted by Stanley Herrin on Mar 01, 2014 PolioPlus Rotarians have mobilized by the hundreds of thousands to ensure that children are immunized against this crippling disease and that

7 Page 7 of 7 surveillance is strong despite the poor infrastructure, extreme poverty and civil strife of many countries. Since the PolioPlus program s inception in 1985 more than two billion children have received oral polio vaccine.
